Some controversy about this record and who belongs:

Laver in 1969: 18 or 17 titles (without Anaheim or BBC2)?

Nastase in 1973: 14 (ATP & ITF), 15 (with Washington), or 17 (plus Kingston and Istanbul)?

Vilas in 1977: 16 or 17 (Rye included)?

What do you think about it?

Laver in 1962... sorry! Open Era only...

Laver with 17, BBC2 don't count, Rye don't count (exo's both).

It's hard to say what counts and what doesn't.

Borg won 22 titles in 1979 - of those, 13 are recognized by the ATP; 16 are at least 8-man fields; the remaining six are four-man invitationals.

Laver played a fair share of eight-man events as well and may have won some four-man ones too.

(according to ITF)

The Australian had a draw of either 56 or 48 - I'm not sure. Laver played five rounds.

Philadelphia had an eight-man field. Los Angeles had an eight-man field.

In South Africa Laver played six rounds with a bye in the opening round.

The French Open had a 128-man draw, as did Wimbledon.

Boston was another eight-man field it seems (three rounds), so was Fort Worth.

The US Open had a 128-man draw, as expected.

Wembley looks like another 8-man field. Three rounds.

That leaves seven more events unaccounted for on the ITF website. I don't know if they were smaller invitationals or not.

Either way, Laver's total is definitely a bit inflated, while the contemporary players yearly totals are smaller than they would have been if they were playing 30-40 years ago, of course.

The most tournaments cited in 1969 were not 8 men events. The ITF, following the World of Tennis yearbooks, have stats, which start only at the quarterfinal, but the real draws were bigger. Wembley had a 64 draw,Philadeladephia a 32 draw; Boston ditto (at least 20 men). Fort Worth a 16 men draw, ditto Los Angeles. The problem of the 17 or 18 for Laver in 69 is the counting of the BBC 2 tournament at Wembley in April, which was indeed a four man event, featuring Laver, Rosewall, Okker and Roche. The people Laver beat in those quarters, semis and finals were all top ten or top 15.

Thanks. I thought that looked suspicious.

The interesting thing is that for some events ITF has results going from round of 16. So I assumed it was accurate.

So were the 17 of Laver's titles all at least eight-man events, urban?

I have a doubt about that one too... but did you saw the final result in Anaheim? 31-16 and 31-28 (!!!) :)

1969 laver

Laver was under contract to the NTL, which only had 6 players, but all top tenners in 1969 (rosewall, gimeno, emerson gonzales and stolle). The NTL still, as in 1968, organised some of its own tournaments in 1969 so some of the fields were bound to be small. But the events are not exhibtions: they are legit events: its just the way pro tennis was organised in the 1960s.

NTL events at ST Louis(olmedo, segura, stolle) and Binghampton(gonzales, stolle and Segura) are both probably 4 man and played as round robins. Batimore was a 6 man round robin affair with all 6 NTL players playing. Orlando was probably a 6 man event with all NTL players.

Anahiem is a legit event (at least 8 players) with both WCT and NTL players. Holmberg beat Emerson and Gonzales to reach the final. Its just the VASS makes it look odd. A vass set to 31 is the same as one normal set of tennis.

BBC2 win is a 4 man event.

Urban is right, neither the ITF or ATp have full draws for some of the events they have listed; they are just copying from the 1969 world of tennis yearbook, which usually only lists results from the qf onwards.

Van Alen Score System. It was a point system invented by the entrepeneur James van Alen, who was the founder of the Tennis Hall of Fame and also invented the tiebreak. A set was played like table tennis to 21-19. Today, table tennis is played to 11, i think, but to 7 sets. The pros used the VASS in the 50s, at the US pro for some years. Later it was played especially at Newport, where van Alen organized a pro tournament. There he used an even more extravagant scoreline, scoring all points won by a player in different matches. Jimmy also experimented with an extra service line, some feet behind the baseline. No wonder, that Pancho Gonzales engaged in some heaty arguments with him.

And all time record?
Here's something from wiki, about 1962 Laver 22 or 21 titles:

Now that additional titles were registered, i checked again the 1962 tally. Sutter gives Laver 21, but McCauley has him with 22 titles in 1962. One possible additional title in question, is for me Newport. The 'Encyclopedia of Tennis' by Max Robertson and Jack Kramer (1971), listed Newport winners and Laver as champ in 1962 (however not in 1960, where he won it, they have Fraser as 1960 winner, but imo Fraser didn't play the US grass circuit in 1960, which was completely dominated by Laver). In a recent audio interview on Radio Tennis, in the wake of the Hall of Fame celebrations at Newport this year, Laver was introduced as Newport winner in 1960 and 1962.
I have no additional information. I would assume McCauley is right in his assertion. Sutter probably missed an event. no source has ever proved to be totally comprehensive when dealing with tournament wins.

I've found some new information : in his book Sutter has listed the 1962 Newport(US) winner as Chuck McKinley over Eugene (Gene) Scott on August 18, 1962 and then I've read my November 1962 edition of World Tennis (US) : it confirms Sutter's information : there were some young US players as Ashe or Riessen or Australian players as Stolle in this tournament but Laver didn't even enter it. McCauley has indeed written that Laver has won 22 tournaments but he hasn't listed them. If he is right then it is another tournament but which ?

Thank you for the input. Sadly, the Hall of Fame webside has no list of former Newport winners. By the way, there were two Newports with tennis tournaments, one in Wales, one in Rhode Island. Maybe the list of Newport (USA) Men's Invitational winners of the Encyclopedia of Tennis, p.260, is not trustful. I will check other sources

Like I posted before, I agree with you about BBC2, but what do you think about Rye Harrison in 77? (8 man draw from what I see from AndrewTas data)

Laver's 1969 record. Compare for yourselves if the tournaments he played should all be recognised.

Tournaments Played 32
Tournaments Won 18
Tournaments Runner-Up 5
Tournament Singles Win-Loss 102-15 (missing 1 singles win during 31 match winning streak after Queens until the Pacific SouthWest)

Reported (by Bud Collins) Win-Loss 106-16 (18 tournaments from 32 tournaments).
This total includes one-night stands between Laver and Emerson/ Gonzales and Rosewall. Laver had two wins over Gonzales, one win over Emerson and a loss against Rosewall.

Thanks Andrew.

In my opinion, it's clear that some of that events don't "deserve" be recognized. I'm not saying that the tournaments were exo's, but 4 man draw. I always felt like this about small tournies, it just my thought.

But, well, if you look ATP stats they take Pepsi GSC on the 70's, so...

And remember that Vilas had a final not held against Borg in 77 too, in Johannesburg (it's probably Bjorn to win that, but, who knows).

Andrew or jeffrey, about Nasty in 73, had some events with a draw of 4 man? Do have the 17 titles(like jeffrey said) for that year?

laver's wins in 1969

Thank you andrew for a full list of laver's 1969 record. I had never seen the madrid draw before. I think you have the baltimore structure slightly wrong. I think this event consisted of 2 round robin groups of 3 with the winners of each group meeting in the final. Laver beat stolle and gimeno in his group. Gonzales emerged as the winner of his group (overcoming Emerson and Rosewall) and then played laver in the final.

Andrew it would be very helpful if you could please fill out the details on these Laver wins by adding final opponent, final score and date (I know from your tournament lists that you do attempt to collect this information)

1956 brisbane metropolitan

1957 redcliffe, central queensland

1958 redcliffe, nambour, southport

1959 central queensland

1960 wynnum, nambour

1963 rhodesian, johannesburg

1965 la paz

1966 durban

1967 montreal

Concerning nastase's wins I think all the events were at least 8 players, even the non-main tour events in Kingston and Istanbul

Thanks Jeffreyneave. I made some wrong conclusions about the 1969 Baltimore event. Here is what I have for Laver's in those events you mentioned. By any chance do you have the full results of the Baltimore event for all players (scores).

Thanks for those substantial informations, Andrew. I always found it somewhat strange, that Laver would have won his first event in a major championships, the Australian 1960. I think, only Guga Kuerten did that, winning the FO in 1997. Seems, that at least the Nambour and Southport events had quite good draws with people like Mal Anderson (top 3 amateur those years), Bob Howe and Ken Fletcher.

laver's wins

Thank you andrew for the information.

concerning baltimore, the results I have are

Emerson beat Rosewall 3-6,4-6,7-5,6-4,6-3
Laver beat Gimeno
stolle beat Gimeno
Gonzales beat Emerson
Laver beat stolle

I would also assume Gonzales beat Rosewall to reach the final, but with roundrobins its not certain.

Laver beat Segura 7-5 ,6-1 at Binghampton 1969.

I will try to get La Paz 1965 results.

There are a few South American results (and dates of tournaments) from 1968 which seem to be hard to find. Maybe you can help here too.

March 18-20 1968
NTL Sao Paulo
Gonzales/ Gimeno/ Laver and Stolle played but no results are known.

The troupe played this tournament afterwards.

March 23-25
NTL Buenos Aires

1R Gonzales d Gimeno 6-2,3-6,7-5
1R Laver d Stolle 6-4,7-5

F Laver d Gonzales 7-5,5-7,6-4

No. 3 Gimeno d Stolle 8-10,6-4,7-5

The following tournaments were played in South America and Joe McCauley stated they were played in November but I believe they were playing sometime in October as the troupe played in the South American Champs (Nov 4-10) and Wembley (Nov 15-21) afterwards.

Laver d Emerson 6-1,10-8

Final standings

Gimeno d Laver 6-1,6-2

Final standings

1 Stolle 3:0

By the way the results from NTL Moscow tournament which was played in August are also unknown.

Regarding these La Paz results. In the Laver book "Education of a Tennis Player" is a description of a La Paz match between Laver and Gimeno (for prize money and a gold watch), where both players began to bleed from their nostrils, due to the extreme high. I wondered often, when this match happened, in 1965, or in 68, when the NTL played these South American tours. Interesting is the comment of Andrew, that the NTL also played a Moscow event. I know, that the pros played in Prague in 67 (where Navratilova saw her idol Laver and modelled her game after him), bit didn't know about a Moscow event.

Borg won 21 titles in 1979. Most don't win that many in a career.

Actually you can argue that Borg's year in 1979 was better than some Hall of Famer's careers like Patrick Rafter. Rafter won 11 total singles titles and 2 majors. Borg in 1979 won the French, Wimbledon, the Canadian, the Year End Masters and 17 other tournaments so Borg's year in 1979 may very well be better than Rafter's career in some ways.

pc1 are you sure about 21? Not 22?
From what I read here, Laver in 62 and Borg in 79 were equals in 22 singles events won in a year
