What do you think of Jo11yroger's Forehand take back?

Now Jolly, yeah, I realize you are taking a lot of heat here, but I wasn't aware that commentors had to be capable of 'kicking your a**' to say something. Someone may have something valid to say, because even those of us down at the lowly 3.5 level can see things with others that we don't necessarily notice (or fix) with ourselves.

I haven't commented, mostly because I feel there are others here more experienced and suited to that, and not because I didn't 'see' anything when I looked at the videos. Doesn't mean that I think I can beat you...ha, not even close.

I was under the impression that Mansewerz took the vids, since he posted them. Did you know he was going to post them Jolly?

No, i'm probably a good 1000 miles away from Jo11y, so I couldn't have taken them.

I was curious about his takeback because I feel as if mine is similar.

The slew of comments (some of them bizarre to say the least) from this thread are the reason why I would dare not post any videos of myself here at TTW. I am scared! Boo!

I wouldn't fear. You seem so nice and down to earth.

P.S. I like german sheps. What's yours called?

No no no. I want to hear what everyone has to say. Of course.

I was referring to the posters of questionable age and maturity who write.

"U Suk, I cud kick your azz 6-0 6-0."

I kind of wanted to head that off at the pass, and let it be known that I am a real person, and will actually play you, and be disapointed if you don't bring a representative match. Or if you don't think you could kick my ass and wanted to meet up to practice something, that I would also gladly help you with whatever you wanted to work on before or after my weekend practices.

Mansewerz didn't take the vids, I did, and I didn't post them because I was just fiddling around learning how to work the camera and aggrivating Mike Cottril with all kinds of newbie questions. But I put one up because we were having a discussion on ball tracking, and I wanted some feedback on saccadic vision based on how I watched the ball as shown in the high speed clip. And then just posted the continuation of that high speed footage taken in normal speed for comparison's sake.

Mansewerz started this thread, and I put up the few short clips from the back so that people could get a better look at my FH takeback and better answer his question.

But I could only fit the little clips up because you only get 500mb/week on vimeo.

The only thing that is going to really bother me is if people start saying bad things about the other people I am hitting with, because they are all my friends, and all incredible people whom I would give the shirt off my back to. So if people begin being rude to them, then I will take down those vids and only put up ones showing myself.

It was my intent to round up a consistent hitting partner and go take video indoors for a couple of hours, so that I could evaluate the videos, and share with whomever. Not go down to the park on a cold day and hit with whomever was there.

But it doesn't matter, the guy in the video is still me, and I will be the same dude when I go play my next match. So no worries to Man for starting the thread. I don't mind.

There are a few posters on here who's opinions I respect, and would be interested in that maybe they noticed something that I didn't.

But a lot of the time I see it as kind of insulting that people post all manner of obvious critique that I didn't ask for. Like I don't know what is wrong.

"Oh thank heaven you told me I swing too much at my volleys, I will now implement your suggestion and tomorrow will become the 2nd comming of Stefan Edberg. I can't believe that I have been practicing netplay so hard for the past year and seeing so many different people to help me when all I needed was your singular comment."

I am sure you have have also played matches, and afterwards someone tells you you double fault too much. I love people like that, it is like "Really?!?! I had no idea. I thought it was good to hit the ball into the net on break point! Now that you have told me that I should no longer double fault I just won't do it anymore."

Very little in this game has come easily to me, and I plan out, what I want to improve in each aspect of the game, and work hard to correct this, and seek out and ask for help when I feel that I need it.

So I could see a posters point of view if I put up the video, and said "I am the perfect tennis player"

But come on, to say that something I do sucks and I should be like _____, usually followed by a youtube link to Federer playing. I think to myself, "Hmmm maybe I should be like that. My not being like that could explain the absence of Wimbledon trophies in my apartment."

Weenie. I'm genuinely intrigued about how my strokes look on film, so I'll be posting some soon, but I need a camera and can't find an electronics store to save me in this God forsaken third world hell hole.

So I can only assume that you hit more topspin than what is shown in the vids? Sorry, I was just curious, I hit a crap-ton of topspin on my groundstrokes when I'm on the baseline (I play a slightly different style or S&V...) and I have to cut out my Topspin Cyberflash 17g... But the 18x20 pattern probably helps the durability...

Yea, I hit heavy topspin aswell. The faster and harder the incomming ball, the flatter I hit. And those courts are also fast worn out public courts.

I hit with LPShanet (great player btw) from the boards on Friday, and we booked a hard court, but they scheduled us on clay. So we tried to straighten it out, and ended up hitting our first hour on hard, and out second hour on clay.

As we were hitting on the hard, he commented that he was surprised to see that I hit so flat. But then we switched to the dirt, and I started naturally hitting more top.

Also, my shots which you deem flat have A LOT more spin on them than you would think. Video or even pro tennis on TV doesn't do much justice for the amount of spin on the ball. All you can really tell is trajectory. Then you go watch a pro tourney live, and you can actually see how much spin is on the ball.

I have a basement apartment in a normal house in the burbs :)

Not a queens style apartment.

Either way. 0 Wimbledon trophies inside.

For sure if I ever get my butt back in NYC I will hit you up for some hitting and some sets. I didn't mean you didn't have any top spin but I think if you took off some lead tape to speed up your racquet head speed to get more topspin. What I meant about everyone looking bad on video, I think everyone thinks they are better than they think. Then they see themsleves on video. most people pick apart their own game.

No worries about the that, but as I said, please reserve comment about my percieved lack of racquethead speed or topspin ;).

Now if you said I was unbalanced, uncoordinated, or had ugly strokes, that would be perfectly acceptable :)

Anybody know when Vimeo considers a week for the 500MB update limit?

I have some footage that is more representative of a rally type ball, that might convey a more accurate depiction rather than just a couple of flat blasts.

After looking back at the vids. I now see a pronounce hook right at the end of the ball's path. Still, 2 hours?!

Video doesn't really do it justice, you need to listen to the sound. Those are new balls btw 2 cans per hitting session, not ones that have been sitting in a hopper for 3 weeks. You are a player, you know what you need to do to a ball to get it to make that sound, outdoors.

I have to agree with this.

http://www.vimeo.com/2229116

I first watched the video, and then read the rest of the thread, and my first impression was that it was sped up by at least, 5-7 or even 10%. The movement (your split steps seem to defy gravity) the people in the background (specially the guy in black/blue around 0:25, and many others). Even the adjustment mini-steps looks surprisingly short and fast.

And mainly, the voices. I'm an audio engineer, I edit, crop, merge and stretch voices for a living, and lemme tell you, those voices do NOT sound natural. Everything sounds compressed, stretched. I may not have a good eye, but my ear is flawless.

Again, just my personal opinion, and that's only for that lone vid that I've seen.

i agree it looks sped up. even the people walking in the background seem to be walking faster than normal.

i always thought with the 20 racquets, the sponsorship, and training he was a 5.0 at least for sure...but

can you show us a matchplay video? right now I'm gonna guess 4.5 because I think he could beat me...but then again, as a 4.0 I think I could have a great day and beat him...even with my heavy feet and lack of fitness

I was just about to put in a request! The k90 was developed for 1 handed backhand players impressive how you are able to set up perfectly for 2 handers.

Incase you didn't notice I just uploaded a short clip from a different viewpoint, but I could only put up a very short clip because I have maxxed out my 500mb weekly upload limit on Vimeo.

J

I'd like to see more video shot from that perspective. I think it would be helpful for your fellow TTW'ers to see the clearance, spin, and depth you are getting. :) CC

Did you see that I dedicated a clip to you?

You would be quite impressed with my play tonite, I was 100% at net, and I even hit two volleys in the same point once!

So 2/2 on net approaches!

Journey of a thousand miles begins with a questionable approach shot.

Hey. . . I might as well put you guys and gals to work.

Please watch the two short FH clips and tell me how much net clearance it looks like I have on those supposedly flat shots.

It is difficult for me to judge.

Missed it, somehow........... Can you post the link? Best, CC :)

the one with the volley was very close to the net cord, but it looks like you have decent net clearance on most of your forehands, like in "Quick FH clip." however, we can't really tell since most of your rallys are only 3 hits, :)

I take that back. That fh approach cleared the net by 1/2 an inch. Jo11y, was that intentional? How the hell did you do that?

i don't think anyone has commented that my video looks sped up in the least...
I'm not sure what you're trying to say about my video

I don't know what anyone else is saying, but the backhands at ~1:28, ~1:40, and ~1:51 looked very nice. Good video.

Jolly's video is definitely not sped up. That is rediculous. The people in the background are walking normal speed.

Definitely a solid 3.0 in my area.
