Not bad, the price is really good. When I built mines it cost me about 400 bucks more. Of course this was about 4 years ago. Why not throw in a blu-ray burner as well?

You can get get one for about 139, that's not too bad. And you don't really need a PS3. A blu-ray disc can hold up 50 GB of data so backing up your hard drive would be a lot easier.

that is a great idea... but due to budgetary constraints i dont think i can spare 140 for an optical drive at the momment... need the workstation to do serious video encoding lol... and i have plenty of harddrives laying around :oops:

Looks like a nice build.Can't say I know a lot about that cooler, but if the HDT-S1283 is anything to go by than Xigmatek make good things. I've not seen Rosewill gear over here before, so I can't comment on the psu or case either :p

Interesting choice of video cards - may I enquire as to why you went down the Crossfire path rather than getting one more powerful card?

Good system. My only concern is the power supply. I built a system for my brother and the Rosewill PSU failed after 4 months. It was my first try with Rosewill and never again. Seriously, it's the heart of your entire system and clean, efficient power is crucial. For me, only Antec... PSU and cases.

Laptops I think are much harder. The parts are smaller to deal with. I'm not sure if a regular average joe could do it.

The biggest problem with building a laptop would be heat issues: you cram everything into a much smaller space, so it a) runs hotter and b) leaves less room for a cooling system. There isn't really demand to build your own laptop, which in turn means that the parts aren't widely available.

When you're up and running, can you report back whether:

- you had (m)any issues finding drivers
- any 32-bit programmes didn't run properly in 32-bit mode?

XP 64-bit just didn't have the support, so I'm curious whether things have moved on for Vista.

I'm mainly interested in 'normal' programmes, so just curious whether you hit any issues. With XP I found certain things just didn't run properly on 64-bit... reminded me of trying to run old DOS-based games in compatibility mode on regular XP.

Drivers were just a PITA. I managed to get 1 printer out of 4 working, and graphics and sound were really hard to come by with no official support.

This was all 5+ years ago though, so I'm just interested to hear if things have improved enough to make 64-bit a realistic option.

I just got a new desktop with Vista 64 in late November and besides a brief hiccup with the monitor drivers (and I blame HP for that mishap) I haven't had any real problems yet. Can run any games really, the onboard videocard is weaksauce.

I'm planing on upgrading the videocard and the power source, any good deals on either of those anyone knows about?

Right now I'm looking at this card.

Honestly I like everything I see including the motherboard. Except for the psu which I'm not familiar with that brand or its quality.

I see you're planning on doing some fairly signifigant overclocking judging from the decent for overclocking p5q pro motherboard and the arctic silver 5 paste and the aftermarket heatsink.

Just to let you know many many people with recently purchased q6600's have been having trouble overclocking as high as in the past. This is a byproduct of intels desire to increase cpu manufacturing yield. They have tweated the fabrication process of the chips in order to increased yield and reduce manufacturing cost and this has been at the expense of reduced overclocking headroom on the chips. This is a standard procedure that has taken place in the past with previous cpu iterations.

You still should be able to reach ~3.1ghz but likely not the 3.4 and beyond achieved by those with past G0 stepped q6600s.

Right now I'm playing Dawn of War, I'm planning on probably getting the new Prince of Persia and Dawn of War 2. Besides that, I just use my computer for work, music, and some design/art stuff.

I have an 8600GT in my PC right now, and it can run all my games smoothly (most on max settings). The GTS version should be even better, and for $40, it's a great deal. Go for it, it makes no sense to drop 3x or 4x the money for a newer one unless you are seriously obsessed with an extra 2 frames per second.

depends on what you run...
some of the newer games on high res and all high settings would not run on that card
you need quadcore and dual 280s to run at high fps

Extra 2 frame? Don't be absurd. And your 8600gt being able to play most games at max setting is incorrect as well unless you are mostly playing 2-4 year old games.

Lets go through a small list of games that will chew up and spit out an 8600gt/s at 1440 x 900 at max settings (with no AntiAliasing).

Mass Effect, Crysis, Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, Bioshock, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Team Fortress 2, Farcry 2, Grid, Heroes of Might and Magic 5, Witcher, Need For Speed Pro Street, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War....

Many of the games now coming out now are created primarily for the xbox/ps3 with the pc coming in as a secondary interest. Under the hood of both the ps3 and the xbox 360 you have a gpu that is around as powerful as a 7800gtx/1800xt. Your 8600gt is a fair bit weaker than than a 7800gtx or ati 1800xt, so the graphic performance of your 8600gt will be less than a 360/ps3. Ontop of that when they port games like Pro Street or GTA4 they tend to do a poor job coding it for pc which only adds to the videocard requirements.

I think he just has two of everything listed by accident.

If not... Stupid. Dual videocards are idiotic. They are almost always outperformed by a single solution from the next round of cards. The only justification would be if money were no object. No other reason.

On the topic of power supplies... I use SeaSonic, they're wonderful.

I'd recommend flipping through http://arstechnica.com/guides/buyer.ars

They do a pretty decent job at recommending systems if you aren't too familiar with the topic.

Well, I have one of those games you mentioned (GRID) and I can play it at 1024 x 768, Medium settings, 4x AA. I get ~30 fps. Not bad, IMO, for a demanding game that was released only 6 months ago.

But then again, I'm not a big gamer, and don't care about everything running at high-res or getting 100 fps. All I can say is that an 8600 will work great for 98% of the games out there and it's a good value. If you want perfection, I guess it might not be enough.
