Vintage Ellesse

I grew up playing in the 80s (probably like a lot of y'all) and I loved Ellesse. I really liked the big patches that all of the tour pros wore. Why won't whoever is in control of Ellesse do what Fila has done and start to re-issue all of the great gear that Vilas, Becker, etc. wore. I cannot be the only one that loved that stuff.....or am I?? Does anyone have pics or sites where you can track down the vintage Ellesse? Thanks.

I've never even heard of Ellesse and if it goes back to the 80s it's probably going to be extremely hard to find (especially if you're looking for something in particular.) The best place to look for hard to find things is e b a y.

JOsh... Azzuri told me you are ok, so instead of unleashing the dogs on you like i usually do im going soft. is this sort of things that makes us old farts go mad, because not knowing one of the BIG 3 Italian tennis gear designer is major lack of knowledge in tennis gear and it's history.

you never seen this logo?:

I think Borg Fila, old Tachini (McEnroe, Gerulaitis, Geme Meyer), and Ellessee (Becker, Cash, Mandlikova, Evert, McNamee, Krickstein, etc.) are the pure classic apparrel with style and quality.

I usually search Getty image, type the players' name and the year, you wull find several pictures

There is no need to 'unleash the dogs' on anyone Gorecki. No, believe it or not I've never heard of Ellesse before. Personally, I'm only interested in Nike and Adidas clothing but I understand how difficult it is to find tennis clothes that are a few seasons old let alone 20+ years. That's why I recommended e b a y to austintennis. It's one of the few places that may carry what he's looking for.

And all of those Italian brands were very expensive. If I recall correctly the shirts were like $70-80 which was a lot of money at the time...well, that is a lot for a shirt now.

back in 80s I could not afford any of Fila Borg, only affluent adult mostly wore them, so I ended up buying replica made by Lotto Johnewcombe brand in Asia

The Borg Fila training suite were made of nice heavy soft thick cotton material, and those nice soft colors of Ellesse clothing....until the Nike Agassi era things drastically changed

josh. its not about being or not interested in something... you just cant be "something" now when you dont know where you came from... Ellesse is Tennis hystory writen in fabric.

as for the bolded part.. well: you are the one losing the chance to be different!

as far as the rest goes. we are cool...

Thanks for the info. I keep thinking whoever owns the company or even just the rights to the logo will re-issue the vintage gear much like Fila has done. A lot of us "old-timers" (I am 35) grew up with those brands being the gold standard. I know Nike and Adidas own the market, but I still prefer the old stuff. Thanks again. T

It's definitely possible. Good luck with your search austintennis. I hope you're able to find what you're looking for. :)

I don't know if anyone here remembers this but there was a company back in the 80s called "Todd 1". They made knock-offs of the highend tennis clothes and even their logo a "T-1" in a box looked like the Fila F box logo.

I LOVED Ellesse clothing. It was the best quality clothing IMO at the time. The cotton was so soft. I was going to school in the late 80's and bought an Ellesse warmup suit from the teaching pro at the club that happened to be the same size as me. He gave me a great deal. I always drooled over Ellesse and Sergio Tacchini growing up. My parents would occasionally buy a shirt for me for Christmas if they could find one.

I loved my ellesse trainers!
with those orange looking half tennis balls on the heels....
I wish they would re-issue those sneakers like stan smiths etc....

the ones on the e b a y somehow looks so cheap now......
ellesse sneakers were so cool with the jeans rolled up to your ankles.....haha

The man Ellesse guy back in the day (1980+) was Guillermo Vilas. He was a Fila guy in the 70's.

I used to love the Ellesse stuff... especially the tracksuits... but could never find anything that would fit me. The other limiting factor was that I was still in highschool and a warmup cost about $230...

I had a ton of the original Borg BJ and Vilas styles in the late 70s and early 80s. Egyptian cotton softer than you can imagine. Not much Ellesse, pronounced 'ELL-ESS' after the founder, Leonardo Servadio, or L.S. The logo you see is actually the center of a tennis ball, and ski tips on either side.

Fila today is just mass-market crap. Awful.

Recently Ellesse has re-issued some of their heritage pieces. Movies like Nick Love's The Firm and The Business have brought a renewed interest in the 80s tennis fashions from Tacchini, Fila and Ellesse. Stuart's and 80s Casual Classics are stocking the Ellesse heritage line. And Ellesse heritage even has a facebook page. Here is the Rimini from the 80s which is available in the UK now.

Several years back, Ellesse released quite a few retro pieces. TW sold several of the pieces including a variety of track jacket re-issues. I bought every style I could get my hands on. I wish they would carry the newest re-issues. Here are two of the Milano Jackets TW sold.

Heck, at one time a few years back Overstock.com managed to get a hold of some of the retro pieces including the Milano track jackets, ski sweaters and polo's.
