For those who have taken AP Chemistry

Was this class difficult in terms of workload?

My teacher gives us so little homework. All we have are online problem quizzes that we take and get 5 bonus points if we get a 10/10 (very easy). Along with that, we never get worksheets or do labs; all he does is give us problems to work on all class long and practice free response questions once in a while. My grade in the class is ridiculously high because of bonus points and easy tests. I'm kind of worried that I might get screwed on exam day, so do you think he probably knows what he's doing? How was your experience of the class?

im not in the class myself but many many of my friends are in it. they have tons of work. at least 1-2 labs per week with a lot of homework. i dunno about their tests but i see them working on chemistry constantly.

yea workload was easy, but i think labs r kinda important, dunno y u dont have any, but if u doin good on the practice ap exams, u prob would do ok on the actual ap exam, i did prettty good on the practice ones, bombed the actual but still got a 5 :)

I have some friends in it and half of them dropped it after the first week because it was hard and the amount of work. I think I'm going to try it next year though because my current chemistry class is real easy.

I didn't take AP Chem, but I did take AP European History in my final year of high school. The workload was a complete joke, but I did learn a great deal.

man u are one freakin lucky azzhole, im taking AP Chem right now, along with AP 11 Eng. and AP Spanish, this class is the highest class i have ever takin in HS, its so freaking hard, i hate it, just the other day we took a quiz, i got a 5/32 int he class i got a 57% in the class right now, but its fine only the beginning, i hope to pass with a B

I'm taking AP Chem right now, and I just got back my highest ever test score of 72%. I'm not THAT much of a stupid ****, the class's average grade is a 78%. 72% on a test in my class is considered rather high actually.

guys, thats like an easy easy easy EASY college course. if youre going to college, get used to it.

At least AP Chem doesn't have the 2-3 hour labs. AP Chem should be easier than a college class only because the person will be going to class every day versus 2 or 3 days a week in college.

You're also exaggerating the ease of college chemistry, even at the lower levels.

I slept through parts of physiology and did fine in the course.

Not everyone is going to be good at science material. Also, how long ago did you take the 100-level chemistry classes?

freshman year undergrad, 2 semesters, 141 and 142 with honors option. just graduated medical school in december so maybe that's why i think those were stupid easy.

AP Chem isn't that hard, but then again chem is one of my stronger subjects. From your description of your class OP, it sounds like your teacher is long overdue for an audit.

Ask your teachers what their average AP score is from students

Can you take classes at a local college rather than AP courses? Most schools allow this but they don't say anything because it costs the school money. You should opt for that rather than AP courses - there is a big difference, and if you go to professional school, say medical, they won't accept AP courses for your required curriculum. They'll reluctantly accept community college courses.

AP Classes are run by the College Board. Most universities will take credit for classes if you get a 4 or 5 on the exam. AP classes are the highest level classes available at my school. Even if colleges give credit for courses, I might just retake them anyway. I've heard of people who skipped courses for which they have received credit because they took the AP course but got screwed later because they forgot everything.

I understand what AP classes are. Have you asked to see if you can take classes at a local college?

As far as workload, I never did AP - I was at a different school that didn't use AP - but I've reviewed the texts and it's probably about 70% of what you'd learn in a college course without the creativity in terms of how much studying you'd have to do. So figure an extra hour a week. As for universities accepting them, most will - but I was referring to grad institutions (and it was general as for medical school you'd need higher chemistry courses than what AP offers).

I surely believe you should take AP classes, iff IB or college classes aren't available. It's a good programme, but not the best.

My whole post was meant for options. It's always favourable for college to take the most demanding route available.

yea i plan on retaking all the classes anyway, im only taking AP because i need that extra 5.0GPA to get into top 10 of my class, it blows for me, im so mad at myself for this, im ranked #11 of like 515

I can't believe I didn't see this thread earlier. Here is my take.

In my class (our school only has one class- 17 of the smartest people in one of the smartest schools in the state) not one person has an A. It is just this teacher in particular. She is amazing (freaking genius) but grades incredibally tough. I love the class, even though I spend countless hours each night working in it. There are people who have taken this particular class and then took it again in college and said the college is sooo much easier. That's not because of no new material, but more of the fact that we go soo much more in depth. Anyway, I've heard a lot of people say AP Chem is easy. It is hell for us. But that's just this particular class.

What about English? Heh.

There are two types: AP English Language and AP English Literature. 11th graders usually take lang. but I decided not to and I regret that. In my school if you take regular English you pretty much get stuck with the juvenile delinquents and the really dumb people. To me regular is a joke...my teacher's vocab is that of a 4th grader's. Basically what I heard is that in lang. you write a lot of essays and the difficulty depends on the teacher. One of the AP lang teachers drops two letter grades on an essay if you use the word "is" or "are".

I'm taking AP Chem right now and pulling an A but in my class, the test grades are put on a curve. Without the curve I would probably be pulling a high B. Basically on every chapter my teacher lectures about the material covered from the book and then she assigns us a set of problems (25-30) and we do those in class until the test. The tests on one hand, are very difficult. Good luck on the exam!
