What would you pick?

Hello everyone,

If you were sponsored by Wilson, which strings would you pick?
Champion's Choice? (rumors of cheap gut)
or any other strings?

I'd take all the Champion Choices i could get, slap the two Luxilon half-sets together, sell the natural gut, and then buy more luxilon.

champions choice, it's got to be the best considering federer and djokovic use it (except djoko uses alu power not rough). plus others in the top 10 have a similiar setup like murray with alu and bde which is natual gut so quite similiar except i think murray uses alu in mains.

No, Novak uses Technifibre.

Neither of aforementioned players use the string that comes in the package of "champion's choice". I figured after making a thousand topics about what setup Novak uses, you'd be able to figure out that he doesn't use "champion's choice", and instead uses something else, and Wilson just takes their version of his setup, and packages it as a hybrid pack, and sells it. Roger uses BABOLAT VS Team 1.25 and Novak uses BABOLAT VS Team 1.25 as well. You can't find that in the "champion's choice" package. What you can find, however, is a cheaply made knockoff of real natural gut. I've used both the gut found in "champion's choice" and the gut made by Babolat, and the difference is night and day, and then some.

To the OP: If I got free strings from Wilson, I'd take a few reels of Big Banger Alu Power Spin, or a few reels of Big Banger Original Rough, or a reel of Luxilon ACE.

No, he uses a hybrid of VS Team and Alu Power. It's well documented, multiple posters here on this board have strung for him, one guy as recently as the Sydney tournament. Sorry, you're wrong.

It's a hybrid set of strings. It's Wilson's Natural Gut and Luxilon's Alu Power Rough. Federer uses it.

A completely false assumption. Federer doesn't use Wilson natural gut. He uses Babolat gut. Babolat gut can't be found in "champion's choice". I get this information from Ron Yu, his personal stringer, has posted here before.

I'm sorry, yes you are correct, I remember reading a forum about that.
Thanks for the correction, won't make that mistake again.

yes, I'd ask for Luxilon reels. However, it's been stated around these forums that almost NO PRO gets free luxilon strings.

Fair enough, you're new, so I won't hold that against you. Novak hasn't used that string since the 2007 US Open. He now uses VS Team/Alu Power, and has done so since the Aussie Open of last year. Quite a few guys here have strung for him, and I go by what they say, since most have pictures and other evidence to back up both their claims and their credentials.

Yes, it says so on the Luxilon site, under FAQ's I believe...
The ones sponsored by Wilson probably get a good deal on Luxilon strings...no?
But doesn't Wilson own Luxilon or something...?

But they probably get Wilson to give them some sort of a deal.

Wilson owns the sporting department of Luxilon Industries. Luxilon is a company that produces thick strings for industrial purposes, and Wilson bought them up when they started getting really popular on tour.

Most of the time, players are paid to use strings made by a certain brand, or at minimum given free string in return for putting the company logo on the stringbed. However, with both Luxilon and Babolat, players aren't even given free string, because neither company needs the advertisement, as both string brands are already wildly popular on tour.

Thank you Nick.

Won't this string setup be extremely easy to break?

Even though they do string 'em tight and use string savers, yes, the setup is very easy to break. However, the pros have tons of frames strung for them for each match, and they only use each frame for 5 or 6 games at maximum. They restring after each match so they never break the strings.

you can do mains and crosses two if you want as both sets are 20feet long

and most peopel are surprised that gut is quite durable i find it much more durable then syn guts like psgd

Djok and Fed both use Fluoro on the crosses for good reason. SPIN!!!!!!!!

they dont use Fluoro... please do not assume that the equipment shown on the TW website is actually what they play with. it only shows the equipment that they ENDORSE, not the equipment they actually use. number 1 example: it says that Nadal uses Babolat PHT and the APDC. instead, he really uses Babolat Duralast and the APD.
same goes for this post too.

no... they are sponsored, but they don't get the strings for free... they will at most get a discount on the luxilon strings. only a select few top ATP players will get luxilon srtings for free.

Fed was the first to use Fluoro two years ago and Djok started using it in China 2007. Luxilon started selling it in 2008.
I use German Fluoro on my crosses with great results! If you want to add kick to your mains, try it!

So if I'm getting a partial with Wilson, I can get good deals through Wilson for Luxilon strings?

if you're getting partial from Wilson, I don't think they will give you their topline strings, like natural gut or Luxilon ... they're offer you a choice of KGut or Sensation or other cheaper strings ... just get the KGut and sell them or trade it for polys, that's your best bet... you can sure try to ask them for the Luxilon or nat. gut, but they'll tell you no and maybe ? ask them to buy at discount price.. and I think they'll still say no to that...
Wilson are hard-ass to deal with... if you're not getting free stuff ,they'll not go out of their way for you at all...

Wilson gives you a specific string allotment as part of your package if you're sponsored. Usually you can use it for fewer sets of their top line strings or more sets of the middle and lower range. Not sure if they're currently including Lux in the mix or not. Also, once you've got your package for the year, they also have a re-order preferred price list that has more products on it, so you may be able to get additional products from that at a good price once you've fulfilled your package for the year.
