Is Dimitrov destined for greatness?

Ludas obviously knows what he is talking about, but I am not sure he is being completely objective. I am not replying to his latest post immediately, because I need to give it some thought (or find where I read what I read). But the thing is, he admits that he prefers France over Poland, but would not admit that objective geoclimatic factors play a determining role.

About what you read and when, as I said things have been changing constantly since the reunification and depending on when the article was written the difference might have been a lot bigger than it is today.

About the geoclimatic factors I admit that I'm not very well informed and this was my personal belief. However I'm open to a change of mind if you can prove me wrong. I just can't be bothered looking it up myself right now since it's almost 2 am here now and I really should go to sleep.

Good night

I know what you are saying, and I am afraid I do not have the energy to find the sources or construct a proper argument myself, but here is what I was trying to say basically, and it is not just about E-W Germany, but really applicable to any country. It is widely believed that government structure is responsible for well-being of a nation, and because most of what’s in print is there for political reasons, these views are very much mainstream regardless of the territory or government in question. Largely ignored is the notion that relative well-being of a nation is pre-determined for the most part by cetain objective factors, such as climate, access to maritime transportation and other geographic positioning factors. So regardless of politics and throughout history and forever certain relationships of superiority will hold, and those include W – E Germany, S – N Korea, Coastal – W China, France – Poland, California – Missouri etc. I think it’s just the way it’s set up…

Nadal wasn't even trying, that's why fed got to win four games in that match. Any solid player would beat down fed on clay, even some of the better D2 players. And the fact that you need to resort to violent threats is not a good indicator of character, since it shows lack of capability within the scope of an intellectual discussion. I wish Grigor all the best.

Congratulations for winning the infamous Troll of the Year Thus Far award. You're quite the moron. All your posts in this thread thus far.

HOWEVER, in light of my more humorous side, I tend to want to believe you're just "in character" and find you very amusing indeed. :)

ROFL X 50!! You must be an idiot or simply must not have a clue about professional tennis.

- is he from Sofia or Varna?

Actually he is from Haskovo - in southern Bulgaria. He trained there at young age, after that he trained in Varna I believe. After that he trained in Spain.

Funny how you mention these two cities, though :)

As for the other questions - no idea how many slams, if any, and this is a stupid list which is more subjective than any other I have ever seen.

Well you rightly point out that all those factors are important and cannot be ignored, which is precisely the reason why those factors are included in the table. It is a little bit more intellectually challenging than adding up slams, but it is a challenge each of us needs to be willing to overcome if we are to consider ourselves great tennis analysts. Because it is also about keeping an open mind and thinking out of the box.

I'm sorry but you do not present an intellectual challenge here. An intellectual jerk off, maybe. All that this is, for the most part, is your opinion, and that's fine. Just don't present it as something else.

Yes, and there have been many discussions and studies on that, if you do a search. But basically the conclusion was that he does not look like a tennis player and is not good for tennis because of his image, cosmetics, purse, gamesmanship, etc. And also there were broader studies, and many tables illustrating, and actually this is one from that link I quoted earlier (which is why I am not sure how many slams):

ROTFL. That list looks more like a 'Mr.ATP' pageant. Although I'm not sure how Kafelnikov got a 5 for personality, while Agassi and Fed got 0 for sportsmanship.

Oh thanks for the trivia, I am sure they did a good job training him in Varna, they usually do. Which academy was he at in Spain mostly, did you train together? Think he can pull off the French this time around?

I can't believe Safin gets 5 for sportmanship. Change that column to number of racquets broken, and that will make more sense.

It was covered in the original research notes leading up to the study:

I completely agree with Safin being 5/5 for looks & personality. Sportsmanship, maybe a 4 if you consider his temper issues, though he mostly is mad at himself.

What is the family tennis category about?

Well, for sportsmanship, I think as long as breaking racquets and yelling is not intended to intimidate or hinder the opponent, it should not chip away from sportsmanship score.

As for family, his sister Dinara is currently making a name for herself on the women's tour, and his mother was a tennis champ in the USSR centuries ago. So he gets one "tennis family" point for each achiever in the immediate family.

That's a funny emoticon you posted! The rest should be self-explanatory though.

I'd love to see Federer Vs Dimitrov...........that would be pretty cool. Maybe he'll get a wild card into Wimbledon this year seen as he won Junior Wimbledon last year and Roger can show him who's boss.....

Haha why is it always about fed, I mean let him have his winter break and go back to Switzerland and do coke with Hingis or whatever... For starters, I'd like to see Safin - Dimitrov final in Marseille this week, just to get a feel for what French and Wimbledon might be about this year. Fed would be lucky to play Dimitrov though - might as well learn to hit a backhand before retirement...

Oh definitely. He can't hit a backhand and he's won 13 grand slams, 14 masters series, and 30 other singles titles. Also he was No.1 for 4 and a half years.

And what do you call these?

Yeah well it's all relative, I mean anybody can kill a sitter, which is what your videos illustrate. That's what junior tennis is about - getting feeds to kill, and that's the only thing fed's good at, so actually a consolation draw for slams could be in the cards so he stops crying every time.

The important thing for a poster like yourself is not getting caught up in the *******ship of these forums and trying to exercise critical thinking rergards higher level tennis. So it's all about critical analysis and priorities!@!;0;)

no there is no *******ship going on here. There is a ****** (that would be yourself) who is making ridiculous claims. It is obvious to me that you are probably a big time alcholic or stoner who is wasted/stoned every second of every day and has nothing better do than waste bandwidth on this forum with your utter BS critical thinking. Tennis is a sport which has nothing to do with looks, personality, family, etc.

See you are just reflecting on yourself here, because you are clearly not adding any value to the discussion. And I am not the one in Switzerland doing coke with Hingis, so please stop with that line. This thread is about Dimitrov and unless you have any insight (which I know you do not have), all you're going is spreading the *******ship around the forums. I suggest you take a deep breath, and start reading and absorbing the knowledge of the forum archives, so as to have any chance of gaining the necessary knowledge in order to be a worthy contributor of the forums. Thanks in advance.

there is no knowledge in this thread and you clearly have no insight on this dimitrov issue. Any 2 year old with a brain can tell you that dimitrov has alot to prove if he wants to be considered in the same league as federer. haha you think you are a worthy contributor? you are the stupidest poster i have seen on this forum. You hardly have any knowledge about tennis. FTR, I am no *******, he is not even my favorite player but I can tell when someone is a ****** when they say the number 2 player cant hit a backhand

this discussion is for sophisticated tennis pros and professionals, and I don't think you have the intellect to contribute... go to rehoboth beach and wait for the summer to come, you might feel better then about your complete lack of tennis knowledge and utmost lack of ability to contribute to these discussions in any meaningful way...

dude just shut the hell up. You hardly know jack about tennis, pretty much everything you said about tennis has been incorrect. Go to hell and stop with the drugs. More pathetic is the fact that you think you are contributing in a "meaningful way" to this forum

OK this is bad, this is not good... I feel like you are not contributing to this thread in any way. And I am sorry if you are bitter about your dirtfed girrlfriend, but that is not a reason to get the Dimitrov thread off track. Please learn a little bit about tennis instead if impeding others' learning processes.

already know more than you about tennis. Maybe you should watch more tennis rather than coming here, posting crap and than tell people they are not contributing in meaningful. Go to hell and as I said before stop with the drugs.

your lack of tennis knowledge is not an excuse for posting meaningless insults in this thread... thousands of tennis analysts around the world are reading through my columns, and having to sort through your postings only hampers their research...

His backhand has plenty of room for growth, that's all that was being pointed out. This is like a free tutorial for him to improve.

plenty now does it? How does it have plenty of room for growth. The only thing he does poorly is handle high topspin balls and that's mostly only on clay, he was pretty comfortable with them during the AO final. And what about his magical "flick backhand" I bet Dimitrov doesn't have that in his arsenal.

please, there is no magic flicks, it's all gone, he is resting and eating cheese and chocolates and doing coke with hingis, nobody cares, he might never play another match again, he is gone from the scene, retired, doesn' have a backhand, never did, let's stop punching him... do you think Dimitrov would kill Nadal in the French or pretty competitive like on hardcourts, those are the issues many of us will be focusing on in the coming weeks...

good point ..... it's the mental game of tennis that makes it so fascinating ..... i haven't seen dimitrov play yet ..... plus i'm not into psychic hotline predictions .... so time will tell ...

should be fun watching his career play out

This kid looks good, but then again, lots of kids throughout tennis history look good.

You just never know if potential and expectations will lineup with reality.

We'll know soon enough. The truly great players (No. 1s, multiple Slam champs) show their greatness early. They don't spend a lot of time milling around the 20s and 30s in the rankings. They don't wait years to beat top players or make deep runs in a Slam or win Slams. Even great players who won their first Slam later than others (such as Fed and Agassi at 22 years old) had done much to serve notice that they weren't just pretty good 1 or 2 Slam-type players.

I always view the next "hot" player with caution, but Dimtrov has a huge upside.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
