You've suddenly become the biggest idiot in this thread.

Justin Fashanu was the first and so far only openly gay footballer and he ended up hanging himself.

Ben Arfa is as big a strop artist as Henry and Ronaldo.

And Torres looks like Maxxie out of Skins, so he must look mucher gayer.

It was a joke (the Ronnie comment). Ben Arfa is a great player, a bit of a diver, yes, but aren't all the young talents from the romance countries (France, Spain, Portugal, Italy)? Do you not rate him or something like that?

Are you joking? Ronaldo scored at least a million goals, home and away. Torres might have broken RVN's debut season record but he was getting goals against the likes of Derby, and 90% of them were at Analfailed, not to mention scoring a crap goal against a mediocre team in the worst final ever isn't all that to brag about. Winning the a league and European double is more of an achievement than what either Xavi and Messi achieved, though they are fantastic and Messi looks likely to win the Ballon D'Or next time imo.

I agree with your comment about the League and Europe double, but Xavi won the European Championship and had a massive season with Barcelona. I know the Ronaldo scored tons of goals, and just all in all had an incredible season, but he choked on the big stage (he was garbage at the Euros, and in the CL semis he wasn't all too great either) and a good deal of his goals also came at Pride Park and other similar teams when he wasn't at OT. He fully deserved the Ballon D'Or, but I think it should have been a much closer fight than was reported.

Massive season with Barcelona? They were humiliated in the league.

Torres didn't do all that at the Euros until Villa got injured, and all he really did against Inter was go down cheaply to get a defender sent off in either leg.

Not my words, alot of well respected people in the game talked about it after he won the award. They said he was too much of a poser and a playboy, aswell as caring more for himself than the team to be awarded the title.. again, not my words (although I can see a bit of truth to it all).

Quite silly of them after players with their own rubbish looking signature boot lines and eat three magnums in one sitting have been voted to win the same award isn't it?

I can only think of one current player with a signature boot, and that's Ronaldinho. He's not that good ATM but his first few seasons with Barcelona made him deserving of the award, remember that game against Real Madrid at the Bernabeau?

True about Clarke. I remember watching a few matches from when Clarke was still with Chelsea as opposed to after Clarke left. A world of difference. Clarke's training methods and Phil's vision led to some great football, remember the game against Pompey? I think it was a huge mistake for Chelsea to let him go. Phil really didn't have anyone like him in the staff and maybe that's a big reason?

So how did you end up a Chelsea supporter being an American? I apologize if this is already in the thread somewhere. I haven't read the whole thing.

Well, first things first, I've been playing football since I was 3 years old. I've been a fan of the game my entire life. I never supported the English game until I was 15, when my neighbor convinced me to do so, (he's from Fulham) I started watching. As someone of English descent(and South African and Swedish), I started cheering for England as my second team during the World Cup 2006, when I spent a good deal of time in Europe. I gravitated to liking a few players, Joe Cole in particular, as my last name is Cole, and he plays a similar position as I do (attacking mid/supporting striker). I got his club shirt when I was in Rome and noticed that the team was the same team that my neighbor grew up with back in England. I did a little research, and saw that Chelsea had other players that impressed me during the World Cup (Ballack being another, as Germany were AWESOME during the WC) I got home, and he informed me of the club's history and told me stories of how he went to the Shed back in the day, and since then I've followed the team as much as I could, while also supporting my local team, New York Metrostars (Red Bull).

When I was Italy (same summer, but after the WC), I visited my second cousin's vacation/summer house in Umbertide, which is between Florence and Rome. We were there with his mother's sister and her family, and the father happened to be from London as well. The father's parents were there as well, and the father's father told me about how he grew up with Chelsea, whom he had supported since he was born. He told me stories about growing up through the game and seeing some real club legends pass through, and see kids that grew up supporting the club go on to become England internationals, Chelsea first-teamers, etc... I guess you could say all of these forces turned me into a true Blue!

Atleast you can't argue that I'm a glory hunter! And anyway, I'm not like those United fans from Southeast Asia or Barcelona fans from India or Pakistan because:

1. I also support my local club, just as much if not more as my favorite European club.
2. I know the team's history, I speak the language, and didn't choose the team because I want to support a winning team.
3. I fully intend to get out to the Bridge atleast once in my lifetime (Fena, you might need to help me once I get to London haha)

I didn't choose to support Chelsea, and I didn't know a ton about the club before deciding to support them. The typical glory hunter only supports a successful club, and only supports them because of that. I had no idea about Chelsea's history before getting a Joe Cole shirt and deciding that Chelsea would be my favorite European team. The club was kind of chosen for me, based off who I spent time with, who I grew up around, etc...

Liverpool is quite popular in my hometown. But that could be attributed to the fact that the most successful youth club in my region has a sister-club relationship with Liverpool and the team regularly goes over to there to train. A buddy of mine and his team got to train alongside the first team a last season. He's even got a photo of him and Fernando Torres together and it's signed. The varsity coach at the local high school also spent time with Liverpool as a youngster, and he knows a couple of guys. The school's athletic hall has a trophy case for each varsity sport, and the one for football has a signed photo by Stevie G and signed ball by the 2007-2008 first team, IIRC.

Lol! If you keep the supply of pies and beer coming, then no problem!

Of course! I do hope that there is good beer at the local pubs and at the Bridge! Here in the states we get **** water at the Stadiums if we're lucky. Water with a tad bit of alcohol if we're not so lucky... And we're charged around 8 bucks US for the "privilege" to drink said ****!

Ahh not good. In the stadiums the beer isn't too brilliant, but you do get places like Everton and Man City where they have Singha which tastes alot fresher than some of the dodgy watered down stuff you find at alot of grounds.

As you say though, it's better to get in a pub beforehand.... the quality is 10 times better and it's alot cheaper too!

Was fine on BBC Three, great game!

Apparently Setanta have the the rights to Serie A in England, to some extent at least... but there is an argument because sites online can show games for free and that causes problems.

Shame we can't see it every week on TV really.

What a joke of a first goal...

I think it's mind boggling that these type of goals stand, even though it's clear to see in TV replays that it's not a valid goal.

We need CHANGE!

Yeah I can't believe it. It hit Adriano's head first but then he clearly redirected the ball with his arm, deflecting it into the goal... it's ridiculous.

Guys, even though our Premiership Fantasy league went down the crapper in terms of people signing up, I figured I'd give the fantasy thing another go! I'm starting up a league at ESPN for the Champions League knockout round. Should be a good time.

Name: Talk TW mini-league
Password: tennis

Hopefully this one will turn out well.

Cheers lads, maybe there will be a prize at the end? Or just for the hell of it, all the losers would have to put "(winner of the league) owns my ass" in their sigs for a few weeks.

Alright lads, Just back from a few days training at Feyenoord's training ground with my school :-D

This guy was our coach:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Wijnstekers

36 caps as Dutch Captain...he also captained....Cruyff and Guillit as Feyenoord Captain to a league title in 1984.

Sounds like the guy had some real quality. How was the training? And why were you in Holland with your school? And how were the facilities at their training ground?

Yeah Stoke are tough at home, awful to watch but difficult to break down for anyone.

I signed up for the Champions League fantasy football but it says I can't join a league yet for some reason, might be fixed in a few days.

Stoke are hard to play at home, it's beyond horrible to watch when a team just parks the bus and plays 11 behind the ball for an entire 90 minutes. FIFA should look into banning that, if possible :). But you can't call yourselves champions if you can't get through that kind of opposition, no matter what. Especially when you've got Torres on your side.

Sounds good for the Champions League fantasy. You've got the password and league name, so just try it tomorrow or some other time, should be a good bit of fun. What is your lineup/roster?

Here's mine:
Lineup (4-4-2)

Diego Lopez (Villareal)

Christian Chivu (Inter) - Sergio Ramos (Madrid) - Jamie Charrager (Liverpool) - Dani Alves (Barcelona)

Samir Nasri (Arsenal) - Darren Fletcher (Manchester United) - Xavi (Barcelona) - Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - Karim Benzema (Lyon)

Bench:

Hulk (FC Porto)
Phillippe Mexes (AS Roma)
Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)
Lukaz Fabianski (Arsenal)

I might switch up my lineup a little bit to add a bit more quality up top, as I've got .5 million that I haven't spent, and if I ditched someone like Alves who isn't consistent as a defender I might be able to splash out on a big-name midfielder or striker.

EDIT: I just ditched Hulk and Alves, and used my excess funds and what I generated by selling those two and I switched my formation to a 3-4-3, and bought Pepe as a backup defender and Sergio Aguero as my third striker.

^^ Yeah it's just horrible stuff, don't blame Liverpool for it but it is indeed games like that that decide who wins the title in the end. United got lucky late in the game and pulled it out, Liverpool didn't, could be the difference.

Your lineup looks pretty good yeah, though could do without any United players haha.

My lineup is as follows. £100m spent even.

(4-3-3)

Almunia (The Arse)

Cashley Cole (Chelsea) - Cordoba (Inter) - Chiellini (Juve) - Sergio Ramos (Real)

Franck Ribery (Bayern) - Xavi (Barca) - Maxi Rodriguez (Atletico)

Del Piero (Juve) - Eto'o (Barca) - Benzema (Lyon)

Bench

GK: Diego Lopez (Villareal)
Def: Bacary Sagna (Arse)
M: Juninho (Lyon), Marcos Senna (Villareal)

Probably won't change mine, might not do well but that doesn't matter, all that does matter is the red scum being knocked out as soon as possible :)

That is one hell of a midfield and strike force, I must say. And Senna is great, and Juninho is a good backup as well. Still don't know why anyone besides Wenger even rates Barcary Sagna. I can never see why everyone is raving about him. Never stood out, IMO.

I only chose Fletcher because he starts often, and works hard. United have a strong team this year and I think they'll do alright against Inter. Never has an awful game, and is fairly consistent. If he does alright his value goes up (you did know that, right, that the values go up and down if a player does well?), I'll give him the boot and probably bring in someone I rate a tad bit higher, Essien is coming back next month and if he's on the CL roster I'll pick him up for sure. I also don't know why Benzema is valued at like 6 or 6.5 million, he's a wonderful prospect and has been decent this season. I think he wants to give Lyon one more shot at the CL and will look to score a ton with Lyon, like he did last season. Hopefully he'll be good. And I hope to god Messi lives up to his pricetag, 12 million could be spent much better if he doesn't do all that well, but the only thing is that his value could be knocked down after a few poor performances. I've got my fingers crossed.

It also seems that we've both built our midfields around Franck Ribery and Xavi. A great central pairing, eh? I think Barcelona could win the whole thing this year and that's why I've got my side built around Xavi, and Ribery is damn good as well and always performs well. However, I've got a few gaps in it, as Nasri is a great player but really hasn't done a whole lot as of late. Hopefully he'll find form and bag a few for the Arse. Ramsey is alright as well but I doubt he'll get much time in. And beyond that, I have absolutely ZERO depth on my bench in terms of the midfield. My defense is a bit lacking as well, Charrager is good, but Ramos is inconsistent at best and even though Chivu is playing alright, and had a good game this weekend I think he's been a shadow of the player that he was at Roma. On my bench, Mexes is good but I think he's in hot water at Roma and not really playing as well as he can. I just bought Pepe, who, like Ramos, can be flat-out brilliant and can be one of the best in the world on his day (remember the Barcelona game last season, at the Nou Camp? When Diarra scored? Pepe was incredible that day, and basically shut down Barcelona's attack all by himself), but is somewhat inconsistent and won't probably do anything special this time around. I could sit around and ***** about how my strikers could be a bit off, but when you've got two of the best strikers in the world, you've got to be atleast somewhat satisfied. :)

I guess the biggest asterisk in my lineup or on my roster is Benzema. How he pans out, I don't know. I can only hope. I just hope to the lord that Essien gets back and plays a few CL matches, as I would absolutely love to have him in my team at the moment in place of Fletcher.

Torres - Ibrahimovic - Aguero

I've gone for it with the first team so have a pretty weak bench, Foster, Mensah, Fuentes and Kaalstrom.

Weak bench. So you signed up for the league as well? This would be cool, if we had a few more guys. If even half the guys from this club sign up, we'd have something good going.

And what's with the Gerrard-Lampard duo in midfield? I thought you English fired Steve the clown because that WAS his midfield? It can't work!

One hell of a front line, though. That really is something.

Yeah, the bench is only needed if a player gets injured though, right?

Well Gerrard and Liverpool love the Champions League and Lampard was voted the best midfielder in last years tournament, so those were obvious to me. Alonso sets up alot, Camoranesi likewise.

The defence is very good, as is the keeper. Just hope I don't have to rely on the donkeys on the bench too much :|

The bench is for switching players between matchdays, so if you've got a few players on your bench that play on days other players aren't you can sub them so that you can get points from both matchdays. That's why it's important to have a deep bench. I'd trade my bench for your starting forward line any day of the week, though.

I think Sagna is very good, perhaps a bit underated actually, in my opinion he's the only consistently good member of that Arsenal defence besides Almunia. Rarely see him out of position and he's very fast as well as being able to put in a decent cross. Makes the grade for me :).

It's fine picking Fletcher just saying the scum make the competition that much worse. Benzema is definitely underpriced considering it'll mainly be him scoring if they play well along with Juninho off of free kicks. He should bag a few before he's done here.

Messi will come through, he always does haha I wouldn't worry except for the sheer number of possible options for attack at Barca. Henry, Eto'o, Xavi, Iniesta, even Alves coming forward. They're a great pick to win considering they pretty much have their league wrapped up and can afford to rest their bigger names for the Champions League. Inter are in similar position but they of course have a difficult round of 16 to contend with first!

Nasri should do fine, with Fabregas and Ad****or out they'll be looking for someone other than Van Persie to step up and he's probably best suited for that out of their current crop of players until Eduardo is fully fit (back in reserves by the way, good to see that :) ).

Defence is almost impossible to call here since most of the attacks are great and Real's defence is almost always impossible to call besides Casillas. That Liverpool/Real matchup could produce a couple of 0-0 draws or it could be high scoring, same for a few of the matchups. This should be one of the more interesting European Cups, Panathinaikos/Lyon final will be great.

But UEFA Cup is more important to me atm, City vs. AC Milan final in Istanbul book it!

If somebody could explain me how this Fantasy League works I'll do my team.

ESPN.com. Then go to Fantasy, then hit soccer. Hit the Champions League (in English) link, and then sign up, select a team based on the budget, and then join in our league, I showed the league name and password above.

I joined the league. I made an all Liga-players team because I think that Barcelona, Atletico and Villareal have the easiest draws and because I trust RM to pass through Liverpool (though not much)

This is my team

Casillas

Pepe - Alves - Ramos

Simao - Cazorla - Pires - Robben

Higuain - Messi - Aguero

Bench: Diego Lopez - Heinze - Ujfalusi - Assuncao

BTW, thanks Nick

Didn't you just love all the talk coming from Villa this week? First it was Petrov, then O'Neill and Carew.

Here's a nice quote from Carew:

“There’s a reason why we are two points ahead of them,” the Norway striker said. “We’ve been better than them this season. I think we are going to go out and show that. Why should we be worried? It’s far in the season now and we have taken a lot of points, they have taken a lot of points, but we have two more than them. Look at the table. We are better than them"

What happened there then Big John? You got an absolute lesson in the first half and Lampard destroyed you.

I suppose he counts being out of the FA Cup, struggling after a poor result against Moscow in the UEFA Cup and now trailing Chelsea in the league as signs of being better than a team in the FA Cup, still challenging for the league, and in the knock-out stages of the Champions League. What an idiot.

Anyway.. here's a few pics from today:
