Okay so what do you think her chances are of finishing off number 1? Will she play all year? I sense a sudden interest in tennis and I think if she plays 20 tournaments she is a lock. If anyone is to win multiple slams it will be her nobody else seems capable. She actually with each tournament is starting to seem more fit..time will tell on that. I think we might actually have a steady top player. We will see though the big tournaments are coming up and she has to show up to them all if she expects to go anywhere but last year there was increase in win percentage and overall better performance. She has won a slam every year for 3 years in a row now and I think she can win more this year. Anyone else care to guess?

Who cares. If she does it is only due to the pathetic field that exists now. Even so she probably still wont since she wont play enough.

too early to tell.

and i think, especially given the williams sisters performance, that computer generated scores doesn't matter. if you can win most of the GSs i'll consider you #1 for the year.

the computer rated system pushes players to play as much as they can and causes people to push their physical limit. stress on the body makes it more likely for injury to occur. i think the william sisters choice to play less tournaments is a good one.

Its really to early to tell, I am personally hoping someone gets their act together and pushes her out soon, and really establishes themself.

Serena didn't dominate last year so it's not like she has to defend massive points, and the rest of the top 5 field is weak and will probably lose points anyway so yes she has a good chance at staying number one

It's either Venus or Serena. There are still three Grand Slam events to go and a lot of tier 1 tourneys or whatever they call it now.

No chance it is Venus at all:

1. Venus sucks on clay and all slow surfaces by this point in her career, even when she does care.

2. Venus only cares about 4 or 5 tournaments a year, Wimbledon, U.S Open, usually Miami, and 1 or 2 others she happens to feel like really trying.

3. Venus only cares about even trying to beat her sister half the times they might play (at most).

If Venus ends the year ranked in the top 5 even I will be very surprised. On the other hand if she doesnt win Wimbledon again I will be almost as surprised, and if she actually disobeys her father should she face Serena she could even win the U.S Open and be the only women to end the year with 2 majors. She still wouldnt even be close to acquiring the points for #1 even in that case though.

I agree about all this post and I think Venus is a better player than Serena at Wimbledon and the US Open

Her days of any consistency are long over. How could anyone count on Serena? She does what she wants, and who knows why? Who really believes all the reasons given?

We have yet to see exactly how Indian Wells will play out under the new rules. I have read the speculation and supposed reports of how it will work but am not buying the story. It doesn't make sense that they would be willing to promote the tournament in its immediate area, during the tournament, which is what the rule requires. The rule does not acknowledge any reluctance to be there. How does that protect the sisters from the verbal abuse they want to avoid or protest? If they don't do it right, they are subject to suspension and to getting a bagel in one required Premier event. That would take its greatest effect in year end ranking.

Can't argue with Serena and Venus scheduling, they clearly know best as they've outlasted Hingis, Henin, Clijsters, Davenport, and those that are still here of that generation are no longer threats:
Serena
And
Venus
Know
Best

Again, it is too early to tell regarding Serena, but one thing is almost a guarantee: Jankovic will not end '09 as the #1 player. Her continued withering under the talents of others with true ability could lead to her quitting the sport--probably within two years.

To early to tell.

Serena dosnt play enough tournaments and is not consistent enough to assume shell be no 1. By USO we should have a pretty good idea though.

So far, JJ's 2009 season is about the same as 2008, which left her at #1. But c'mon, the thread is about Serena.
