What are Federer's racquet specs(grip, weight, tension)?

The photos are not accessible anymore - photobucket bandwidth exceeded.

And did you guys find the balance yet?

Thanks.

I haven't. Greg Raven has.

I've got one of Federer's actual match K6.1 Tour from the 08 season, will post some pictures of it along with the retail versions over the weekend. Federer uses a grip size of 4 3/8 (L3), with white overgrip.

fabfed it looks like there is no leather grip underneath the overwrap??? does it feel like there is one????

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, all the discernible, measurable characteristics of Federer's racquet is close enough to a stock K90 to warrant it the same racquet. Therefore, without any further proof, Federer does indeed use a K90, which might be slightly leaded up for consistency.

However, in my own little world, I'd like to think Federer does use a custom frame, simply because it seems a bit more exotic. I'd like to think he still uses the 80% Graphite 20% Kevlar layup as per the PS85, seeing as he grew up with that frame. That makes more sense to me, as none of the models that Wilson has come up with play like that layup. The K90 is close, but not quite.

The K90 does indeed contain 80% Graphite and 20% Kevlar.

There's no such thing as "Karophite Black". It's a marketing name Wilson made up for graphite because it's sounds more "exotic". Karophite Black = graphite.

I have a question about federer's string setup I heard it was a max movement setup so does that mean he strings the crosses tighter and the natural gut looser so it slides across the luxilion providing more spin?

FabFed,

Thank you for your pics. We really appreciate it.

Could you please also post picture of inside of the handle? You can very easy open buttcap door and see inside.

Also, but only if you would like, could you lift up bumperguard a little bit and look if there is some lead tape (at a few locations )? It is also very easy and safe.

Because as somebody says, it could be lighter or Asian version with some small amount of lead under bumper and counterweight in the handle, below the grip or molded in the handle foam. And you still will have same weight/balance same as retail version, but more polarized and higher swingweight. Similar like it is with Head racquets for pros, made in Austria.

Thanks.

^ i'm sure for the amount he paid for it, he's not gonna start pulling it apart regardless of how safe it could be

"First on the wall here is Roger Federer racket, just like the one you can buy at the shop."

Yes it does look like the one I can buy at the shop.

But it is probably a custom composition racquet with the PS85 feel and custom flex areas, PJed, and shipped to Priority One, where they add more lead as needed.

So when we say he's using a "stock" racquet, we mean stock minus the custom molded handle.
All racquet frames are molded without the handles on them. So "stock" racquets from the molding factory do not include the handles. The handles are always added later, either by a customizer or by another area of the factory or by another factory. So the handles are not really part of the frame, and neither are the butt caps. ;)

So does the OP intend NOT to hit with the frame at all?... I would have thought that the overwhelming desire to at least briefly hit with the rod Federer himself has played with would prove, rather in the manner of "the ring" in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, just too strong to ignore? It would also be v/interesting indeed for everyone to hear how RF's plays, feels, etc, in the OP's hands.

I agreed with to the previous poster too. I am so curious to know how does it feel to hit with Fdx's racquet versus the retail, normal one. Is it super stiff, soft, slow, fast...etc...:?

I'm so glad that Nate Ferguson's interview has been released. Those who said in this thread that it is unethical to release players' customisation was WRONG.

I too can own an Federer like racket by visiting any tennis shop - good times.

The only thing is that his string tensions are extremely low, high 40s. So if you string in the 50s then playing with a real Fed raquet will definitely feel different, in addition to the gut/alu combo he has.

Why are they wrong? Because Nate Ferguson said he added lead under the bumper? If somebody does something, it is automatically ethical?

Remember that Ron Yu would not divulge Fed's specs.

You are correct, 22 kg is about 48 lbs. I had trouble controlling the K90, strung with VS 17 at 53 lbs.

If you pay attention, the guys at P1 don't give away Federer's exact specs. They speak vaguely. He strings "around" X tension, they "sneak a little" lead under the bumper.

I don't think they're hiding anything because he changes his specs depending on conditions or where his game is at.

With a little deductive reasoning and some "snapshot" frames gathered by people that handle his stuff or by those that have won or paid for his frames we get a focused idea of what Federer uses.

The P1 guys have better things to do than publish the exact specs of their clients' frames for all the fan-boys out there.

Besides, players' specs change all the time. Although they might have a range.

Who needs to know the "exact" tension when there is no exact tension? Same goes for weighting.

Nate Ferguson saying that it's the "same frame as you can get from the shop" shouldn't be big news. The last frame that you could get that Federer used off the shelf was the Chinese PS85. Now you can get the k90 (I'll take Wilson's word at face value here). I don't know why people are so cynical. Custom handles or not. They're customized to him. Just as you should tailor your gear to you.

Why are you arguing with me? It was someone else who claimed he gave away the specs.

Yes. Fed's specs change from time to time, so it's impossible to answer the question of "what are his specs?". You can try to get as close as possible by using the same strings and same tension, other than that there's nothing more anyone can do, because even if you get your hands on two actual Fed racquents they might not have the same specs.

Sorry, I wasn't meaning to be argumentative.

Didn't you say that it was "unethical" to give away the specs?

If Federer didn't want people to know what he was using then he wouldn't give away match-played frames.

Hey, don't feel bad, I agree with you completely as well. Sureshs sure has a lot to say but unfortunately gets himself tangled in convoluted arguments that make no sense. His lame "ethics" argument (if you can call it an argument) isn't new, he mentioned it in a few earlier dreary postings in this thread during which he also accused me of being a thief, not once but twice (the postings have since been removed, but the rest of the guys would have seen them), so really, I'm not sure why Sueshs is getting all bent out of shape here...

Fabfed - I read through those posts where you showed pics of your Federer racket. Nice score BTW. But his methods of trying to "nudge" you into giving the specs of your frame was inappropriate. Even after you showed the weight of the frame he was on you about the balance.

Like I said, I'll take Federer's, Wilsons' and Nate Ferguson's word at face value that the k90 you can get at the stores is the same frame that Federer uses. If it turns out that's not the case, it's still no biggie. Just interesting info about an interesting player.

Custom handle shapes, lead tape placement/amounts, strings, string savers, overgrip, buttcaps etc. Fine. I'm sure if you paid some money and got P1 to do up some k90s for you for Fed's specs then you'd have as close to an actual Federer frame as you can purchase......or you can do what you did and score an autographed match frame.

Roger, playing the ATP tour, doesn't come across the big hitters some of the regular posters here run into down at the country club, so he has no need to lead his frame up to 14 oz with a 400 SW. At the public park, I would say lead your frame up to 15 oz and 500 SW to deal with the pace you will encounter there.

Best post i've read for a long, long time

I know you have been thanked many times already Fabfed but i would like to humbly add me to the list. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy day to post pics and respond to questions about Feds real racquet, especially since you dont know anyone here personally, and everyone is essentially a stranger. That is quite considerate and generous of you.

Those of you giving Fabfed a hard time, this is has been disscussed and posted to death and without the wonderful contribitions of Greg Raven, Fabfed, and Ron Yu>>>we would STILL be speculating and flaming back and forth to no end.

Again, thank you Fabfed, Greg Raven, and Ron Yu....... you are Gentlemen and Scholars. :)

PS- The mods should sticky this thread.

Yeah, that stick is the real deal. Definitely not last used in Madrid though. Nate usually strings for Roger in Madrid, and I can tell from the pics that I was the last person to string this particular frame. Glad to hear that you aren't going to hit with it. Keep it nice and safe on a wall somewhere in your home. The gut will end up breaking eventually. When that happens, feel free to contact us, and we'll be glad to restring it, if that is something you'd want.

Are the power pads on this racquet homemade or can those be purchased?

LOL Legendary comment. Although we should remember to take all things posted here with the grain of salt, so somebody's amazing serve and hard hitting 100 MPH ground strokes could be the last guy in your local league in your neck of the woods.
I don't know but I heard that ratings don't really work and that "5.5" (notice the .5 lol) in Montana is not really the same as 5.5 in Florida.

BTW don't think its a good idea to call out other posters on it anyways might just start the flame.

Seems to be nothing like the stock K90 which is 9 pts HL and SW of 336. This is 7 pts HL and SW of 353. Of course he is probably adding lead under the bumper, but I suspect it is a different composition with custom weight distribution.

I don't know about that. If these numbers are without overgrip it could be stock.

340g stock +17 g. strings + 4.5g lead +.5 g. powerpads = 362 g./32.0cm/353SW

Art Art - are those specs with or without overgrip?:)

The powerpads aren't like 5grams, more like 2 or 3grams.

Can't confirm, because it wasn't me that check the specs, but it seems that is with overgrip, ready to play with it...

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I've read before that the amount of lead he has under the bumper depends on what surface he's playing on and that normally he goes heavier for clay and lighter (nearly stock K90 weight) for grass. I assume, and others can correct me if I'm wrong, that he is looking for more maneuverability on grass and more pace and spin on clay. It’s interesting that he appears to be using a heavier frame this year.

It’s actually really exciting for me to hear that Fed’s SW is up that high. I’m just a 4.0, but I prefer to lead my frame to about 355g, 355 SW. It was somehow disturbing when I would hear that Fed’s racquet swung lighter than mine.

Good catch. I've been stringing my KPS88 with this same pattern of tying off on the crosses at 9H. Unlike Fed's frame though, I'm doing it on a one piece string job (a sort of 3 box pattern).

This type of stringing is rarely seen on recreational players frames. (tying off on crosses, rather than mains.)

Anyway, fabFed, thanks for sharing the photos. Great stuff.

What benefit does one have from tying off on a cross rather than a main?
