Masters Finals, should they go back to being best of 5 sets??

I think they should, I know Canada and Cincinnati never were best of 5 sets, but the other Masters Series and Masters Cup were and I feel it added to the tournament, it set the Masters Series apart from regular ATP tournaments.

I also feel that the top 8 seeds getting a first round bye for all the Masters (excluding Indian Wells & Miami) should be scrapped. Once again, these tournaments are meant to be just below the slams and the top 8 seeds don't get 1st round byes at Wimbledon do they??

Thoughts.

A poll with this question would have been nice. Hmm, I don't know, I would like to see 5 sets, but with the schedule the way it is now, I don't know if that would be feasible for the players health and longevity overall.

With so many players complaining about the schedule and how tired and exhausted they are, no way...keep them best out of 3. In fact, I think they should change the GS to best out of 3 as well (at least the first few rounds) for the following reason:
1. Less wear and tear on the players
2. Better chance for recovery for the next match...too often, the winner of a 5 set thriller goes down meekly in the next round**
3. Just don't see why it is necessary...if you can't get it done in best out of 3, then you don't get to go on to the next round.

The game is very different from even just ten years ago. No reason to keep it the same just for tradition's sake, when a change could benefit the player's so greatly.

Just my opinion! Flame away boys.

**As always, Nadal is an exception, but it isn't like he breezed through the AO final after his 5 set semi.

They should, for most of them. Not all of them. I don't recall Canada Masters ever being best-of-five.

Pros are playing less and less with every year. I don't see where the problem is. IW and Miami takes up a whole month. Just go with the best-of-five finals already. It makes for better tennis.

Remember those two great Rome finals on clay? Nadal/Coria, Nadal/Federer? We need that again, which means that at least one of the masters series on clay should go best-of-five.

Leave Canada/Cincinnati as is. They always (I think) were that way. After that let's go best-of-five in Shanghai and London. Paris can stay best-of-three.

I prefer the best of 5 set format for Masters events but with the recent order of play some tournament's have matches that are going way past midnight wih best of 3 set matches. The scheduling I think would need to be reworked a bit to allow for best of 5. If the quality of tennis is high best 5 is great. The level of play was relativeley low at Indian Wells and Miami so I didn't mind the the best of three.

Yes i think the finals should be, obviously best of 5 throughout the rounds would be too much bit i think it's not too much of a strain to play best of 5 in the final, they often have a day off beforehand.

I personally just can't stand watching the dudes murder themselves in best of five matches when it's unheard of with the ladies. I don't want to derail the topic, but it's an issue that keeps sneaking into my head.

The schedule is already murder on these guys and with the best of three format, we ought to be able to see more players sustaining a higher level of play into the later rounds of these tournaments. With a day of rest and a best of three match facing them on Sunday, I think it would be more likely to see the guys "leave it all on the court" in their finals even though we didn't get that in Miami... for either final.

Remember that the majors demand pretty much an ever other day playing schedule even with the best of five format. The Masters events demand a lot more back to back days of full speed competition. Nadal pulled off what was nearly unthinkable in Australia, but over several tough weeks, he can run up a bill that will eventually come due. I hate to see that.

No. Masters are fine as they are now. Schedule is packed already. That is why it was changed. Also no prestige lost for Masters. We are talking just about the final not the whole tournament.

IMO on one tournament all matches should be either best of 3 or best of 5. Mixing it up and having only final in the best of 5 format makes no sense.

Also do not agree with changing the slams. Please don't mess with slams, they are fine the way they are. The only change that is needed for slams is to change USO to be the same as others and not to play a TB in the deciding set.

I started following tennis (again) in 2006, and was quite surprised to learn that men play 3-setters like the ladies. I always thought 5 sets was the rule.:)

I think so. Now top players should play 18-19 tournaments (compared to 13 in the past). And the tennis is being played very slowly on slowed surfaces and thus every points are much longer. We are seeing more so called "epic" matches which has big total number of points and each point is very long.

And current environment is ALL or Nothing environments. More top players are making quarter-finals or more. It's good for TV because we almost always have top players on weekends but we will have shorter life-span of top players.

It became like WTA and we might have to play 2 out 3 sets at slams like WTA. OK, probably not quite but I think we are going to have to lower the required number of tournaments of top players for ranking points. Otherwise, we will have pretty short life-span of top players in the near future, IMHO.

From a paying public perspective, I would hate to attend a MS final, pay $100 and see a quick 2 set drubbing like what happened in the womens and mens final this weekend..... the finals should be best of 5 in all MS.

and yes....no more 1st round byes....there are enough players from the qualies that would jump at a chance to play the 1st rd .....even against a Nadal
