Man, I am pretty dissapointed in myself, I let a dinking hacker beat me in a 4.0 league match. The guy got to everything and my gameplan of chipping and charging only worked about 35% of the time. I'm pretty out of shape and my footwork wasn't really good, I also overhit a lot of shots and missed overhead after overheard! What to do what to do??!

Ugh. Can't win them all, right? This happened to my brother recently (also a former college player). He was rolling right along, beating 5.0s in straight sets, and then lost to a 4.0 player. Definitely a bummer.
I know it's easy to say, but don't let it get to you. Get out there and hit a lot of practice balls, get your groove back. Don't get hesitant, keep your strokes. It happens every now and then.

Mine happened this weekend. I lost to the weakest player on our 4.0 team 6-7, 5-7. I just felt un-sure of myself and my abilities. My net game was horrific, and that's supposed to be my strength. I hit a lot of winners but hit equally amount of UE as well. 1st Serve % was around 35% and sometimes through in 2 DFs per service game. College tennis just seemed so long ago. LOL-Jon

I'm having trouble figuring out how a "Former college player loses to a 4.0 dinking hacker". Just how good were you in college, and how long ago was it? The guys I've seen that played college ball would tear a 4.0 to shreds. On the other hand, you probably made that guys day.
I played #7 at a div 1 school, I can't tell you how it happened but the guy I was playing never missed a shot. I was cranking serves around 95-110 mph and he got all of them in deep and got me to over hit a lot of my forehands. The guy actually plays alot of 4.5 tournaments and wins! If you saw him practice you'd laugh but he's pretty darn good for a hacker. Anyways, I should've beat him easily I think but I didn't, what can I say

You say you are missing overheads ?? Do you know why ?? I know why ? it is because your footwork. If your footwork is off then you will find it impossible to get in proper position to hit the overheads. you have to turn and push off with right leg if right handed and snap your wrist and hit the ball in front. but if you are not in position, you will be reaching for it and Lose control.

Definitely wasn't one of my better days for sure. A lot of points went to deuces and there was only one break...mine...lol. The guy is very consistent but was exceptional that day and against big hitters he'll take the air out of the ball and throw in quite a bit of junk as well. He was also quick serving me as well, but I didn't really care since I've never lost to him till this weekend.
I personally feel he was playing great as I have to carry him in league doubles play. Out of more than 10 sets that we've played against each other these were the only 2 sets he's picked off from me and the sets that I won weren't really close. I just made a ton of errors as that canceled out my winners.
Last time I played in college was in 01' as the #5 singles & 3 dubs. . . and that was also almost 60lbs ago

He didn't beat you, you beat yourself, I have a lot of matches playing those guys too, I am still working on the mental aspect of it to beat those guys!
I think the rule is just that he has to self-rate 4.5 or higher. Former d1 players are technically allowed at any level, if they move down the ratings.
I assume he was giving you balls with no pace and you overhit. How do you think all the pros feel when they play Murray?
