Roger is a Man

NLBwell

Legend
A man, not a machine. For us old guys, we understand. His girlfriend is having a baby. Roger's tennis is not the most important thing in his life now. Mirka ran her life around him and his tennis and now everything is upside down. He finally gets married to her. He has to tend to her now. It can be very stressful tending to a pregnant woman (as us dads know). He's got stress about marriage, about baby, about mood swings and getting ice cream in the night, worries about whether everything will be right with the baby, wondering if they are doing all the correct things for it. Going to ultrasounds, naming the baby, making sure all the things you need for it are bought, are all weighing on his mind. He is a guy who cares a lot about things - and I'm sure he cares deeply about Mirka and his baby - but he is also someone who likes routine and predictability - AND THAT IS NOT HAPPENING NOW. This is why he is more emotional - crying at the Aussie Open, breaking his racket, falling apart in matches.

It's not an excuse, it is the facts. I don't care if he wins or loses. Just pointing out that a lot of people don't think of tennis pros as human beings. Did you not get distracted at least a bit from your job when your wife had a baby? If you don't have a job, a wife, and a baby, then you are talking from ignorance.

I hate when people post with worthless headlines, saying nothing. Why don't you read the newspaper or internet and learn how to write a worthwile headline. Your comment was worthy of a meaningful and descriptive headline.

I am with you here. He is just emotionally tired, there is no doubt about that and he has every reason to. You reach a point in sports that all it matters is your state of mind. Not your fitness, not your technique, not your strategy. I know it from my personal experience. If you are not 100% committed to it you go down. There is no other way. Especially in tennis and especially when you have hundreds of thousands of eyes on you and when you have exceptionally successful years behind you that you have to keep up with.

But he has to make a choice also, there is no excuse, either you are a father or a historic tennis figure. There is no other way. You cant be committed to both. You got to make the choice now, and when you make the choice you got to go all the way.

How many wives, babies, weddings etc has he had? The downward spiral hasn't just started.

Other pro players have all these other things going on in their lives. Its part of the human cycle.

This is about the present and his emotional state - crying, breaking rackets. You keep trying to make it about Federer not being number one - you still don't get it.
Actually, very few pro players have children. I can't think of any off the top of my head, though I'm sure there must be some others.

I don't care where he is ranked, all I am saying is this behavior has been present long before these current life changing events he has got himself into right now.

He has always been crying, he always broke his racquets as a junior and only stopped when he was dominating opponents, now he cant dominate anymore they are returning.

There are many pros with families, give it a rest

I didn't think it was possible to fit so many excuses into a single paragraph!

Of course other players have had children, but most of them did not have spouses that doubled as managers. I think it makes a huge difference--much harder to compartmentalize family and career when the two are so intertwined.

How many with 13 GS, huge pressure, back problems and mono? There not excuses they are reasons. You must be extremely young if you think these things don't affect performance not just in tennis but any event.

You're still on that mono thing... even after I explained to you that mono (in normal people) lasts at most 4 months (from onset until symptoms completely disappear).

All the players have issues suck as injuries and pressure.

No more excuses.

None with 13 slams, so what, he choose his life and the pressure. every player has injuries during a long career of course they effect performance but there is no need to make a song and dance and cry about them, its life.

Geez what about the guys that lost their whole sporting careers from injury. Blowing out knees, back injuries, etc etc.

I am trying not to bag the guy out but come on, he has chosen his destiny, been extremely lucky with injuries through his career and now needs to man up and take the losses.

Its nice to hear a considerate/realistic/ADULT post once in a while, instead of the "this persons rules and everyone else sucks" posts im used to seeing on this forum. I doubt this is 100% of the reason Rogers having a tough time lately, but im positive its an important chunk of it. Well done NLBwell. :)

I agree. Tennis is not his number one priority, and that is definitely showing right now. And then when he wants to get back to his old form, it will be too late.

Maybe Roger and Mirka hava a cat at home, too? Cats can cause lot of troubles, you know, scratching the sofa etc. Maybe it's in Roger's mind during the matches, what that damn cat's doing at home again.

The baby is still to come however, and Mirka has all the money and support in the world to be a healthy pregnant woman. It might be bothering Fed - I mean, marriage, baby, those are big stuff in anyone's life. Buf I think Fed should really give one more push to at least tie the record this year. His chances won't get any better, he's not exactly improving as a player (in fact his decline is a bit too quick IMO) and this is the time to strike.

Seriously though nlbwell, allow me to explain how the world works in engineer-friendly terms.
1. A horse is only as good as it's last race. Lot easier to gloat about the latest and greatest than to defend past glory.
2. When reasons get stale they become excuses. Sorry but you're 2 years too late to the game.
3. You seem to be a nice person. It's of no help on Internet forums. Talk tough, make blanket claims based on your feelings and find others who share your prejudices. Then scratch each others backs and trash everyone else. Otherwise your posts will stick out like a nail inviting a hammering.

4. You can always be a nice guy in real life. That's where it counts most.

"Pride goes before a fall"

and for you religious types

Pride precedes disaster. An elliptical version of proverbs xvi. 18 (AV) Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Federer is a man with a huge EGO and it's taking a beating right now.

No wonder he's crying and smashing his racket.

How come when Agassi and McEnroe had kids, they still played well? Can we forget about the cheap tabloid type excuses?

But Fed is still playing well, just not to his standards, he will take out any other out of the top 5, obviousy he is declining and others are getting better this is the reality, as any other great player on the past and as will happen to any other great player on the future, time have no mercy.

Roger is always very determined. It is depressing for him to start losing despite giving 100%. You feel the worst when you realize your best is not good enough anymore. Example is Roger's breakdown after the Australian Open.
