Bad news for Federer: History is repeating itself

This has happened before the same way. Nothing new.

At Hamburg Nadal faced Hewitt in a tough semifinal and then faced Roger in the final the next day to lose in the best of three sets. However Rafa went on to win the FO in a best of five

At Madrid Nadal had to face Djokovic in a tough semifinal and once again lost to Federer in the best of three.....but will go on to win the FO in the hot sun in a best of five.

Good thing you got your history completely wrong.

Hamburg 07 Nadal played Hewitt in the SF. Federer won 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the final.

Hamburg 08 Nadal played Djokovic in the SF. Nadal won the final.

Sigh, Nadal fans always getting facts wrong.

In 2007, Nadal faced Federer in the finals of the last clay court masters event before the French Open. Nadal played a 3-setter in the semifinals. Nadal came in on a long match winning streak on clay. Federer beat Nadal in the final.

Today, Nadal faced Federer in the finals of the last clay court masters event before the French Open. Nadal played a 3-setter in the semifinals. Nadal came in on a long match winning streak on clay. Federer beat Nadal in the final.

As someone else already pointed out, Nadal didn't play Djokovic in 2007 in the Hamburg semis.

While I don't think it's "bad news" for Nadal to have lost this match, I DEFINITELY don't see how it's somehow bad news for Federer to play as well as he did, on clay, against Nadal, heading into the French Open. LOL.

Fed is going to be destroyed at the French by Nadal, IF Djokovic dosen't get to him first, lol.

Nadal, up to this point, has had the EXACT same season (except for the notable exception of winning the Australian Open) as he's had in 2007 - Indian Wells Champ, Monte Carlo+Barcelona+Rome, 3rd Clay Master's Finalist (Hamburg, in the case of 2007).

And he still went on to win the FO.

Bad news, though, is that he didn't win Wimbledon that year.

I'd give Federer a 20 percent chance of winning the FO. But, if he is able to come up with a game plan that is suitable to the surface and dictate play as he did today, then he will when the FO. I wonder if Nadal will be rested up enough for the FO, seeing as he is playing an exhibition this week.

So you are saying Fed will get to his 4th FO final. WOW! That's awesome! That really made my day. 4 FO finals. So much better than just 1 FO semi for Sampras. So much better!

Ok so based on your post if history is indeed repeating itself, then Fed will win Wimbledon & USO this year just like he did that year? I can live with that but can you? ;)

Yeah but he beat Nadal 6-0 at Hamburg and then he folded at the FO.

Don't get me wrong.....Federer did a great job and was the better player today.

But I am just saying that there is a HUGE difference between the best of three and a best of five.

In fact Rogers record in five setters is not very good at all while Nadals is spectacular.

I remember after Hamburg 2007 fed said he had cracked the nadal code on clay and now knew how to beat him... oops.

Do a google search.

Nothing came other than journalists asking if he can crack the Nadal code on clay...Provide a reference to your claim...Not calling you a liar, but I would be surprised if Fed said something like that...

I can't remember anyone besides Safin and Nadal in recent years who has beaten Federer in a five set match. In fact, Nadal is the only one who can consistently push him to five sets.
His record in best of fives is ridiculously good (losing only to Nadal and Djokovic in the past few years). As with his H2H against Nadal(reaching clay finals), his five set record suffers from his excellence(ability to close out in 3/4 and only being pushed to five against really top form opponents).
Federer would gain more of an advantage than Nadal in a switch from a best of three to a best of five, because Nadal is more prone to physically breaking down(wimb 07) and becoming tired. I can't remember when I last saw Federer gasping for air.

That's exactly what I said, but I'm quite certain that you are exaggerating how bad his record is.
Why don't you show it or link it?

Just lazy.

anyway, bottom line is that I think this is a wake up call to Nadal.

I am glad that Rafa lost....he is going to get to work....no one fights harder or works harder. Federer is going to have hos hands full at the FO.

The bull has now seen red!

We have not seen the pirate shorts or the sleevelss shirts...nadal has become complacent. The old fighting Rafa will now return.

We are going to hear something that we have not heard for a long time..................:

Yes he said that, in different interviews. He was euphoric and convinced he could win against Nadal on clay. We all know what happened a bit later in 2007 and 2008 was no different.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that might just be because he actually won against Nadal on clay.

You aren't proving yourself. Name the times Fed has been beaten when he's been pushed to 5 sets.

AO2009 - Nadal
AO2009 vs. Berdych - Federer won
Wimbledon2008 - Nadal
USOpen 2008 vs. Andreev - Federer won
Wimbledon2007 vs. Nadal - Federer won
AO2007 vs. Tipsarevic - Federer won
Rome2006 vs. Nadal - Nadal won

He's rarely pushed to 5 sets, and the only won that has beaten him in the 5th has been Nadal

Yes of course Fed has beaten people when he has been stretched to five sets.

But his record when he is pushed to five sets is only average.

Maybe, maybe not. If you have to curl up in a ball and repeat that over and over to get to sleep tonight, that's cool. Mix in some "Madrid is at altitude!" Whatever.

Today's match wasn't really that tough - Fed didn't let it degenerate into a baseline slugfest as he has - very stupidly and unsuccessfully - in the past. So Rafa's effort Saturday wasn't an issue. In addition Rafa had the early match - Fed played at night against JMDP.

I still think if Fed serves well and plays aggressively as he did today he has a 50-50 or better shot against Rafa. There are some things a counterpuncher just can't defend against - that's the downside of the strategy - if an aggressive player is on the counterpuncher gets worn down and demoralized.

We'll know in 3 weeks...

the spirit of your post is correct. I will be predicting nadal will win the RG probably just as easily as last year. Vamos nadal!

Federer will come into the FO thinking he has improved his game because of this win. Nadal has already forgotten the loss and will enter the FO with a clean slate. Federer will find that he will meet a different Nadal than today, if he (Fed) even makes it to the final. No altitude, no funny bounces, and an energetic Nadal.

hmm I'm sure Fed will know that conditions at the FO will be a bit different than the ones in Madrid. And to be honest, it wouldn't have been better for Fed had he lost to Nadal or Delpo. That would shatter his confidence even more if he lost after he said he worked on his game. A win is the best thing that coulda happened for him going into the FO.

RAFAEL NADAL:

"To me, this tournament has nothing to do with Paris. This tournament is practically another surface compared to Paris," said Nadal, who was troubled with the odd bounces and faster pace brought on by higher altitude. "The conditions favored him more than me."

ROGER FEDERER:

"I don't think he's going to take any damage away from this," Federer said. "I'm sure he's going to be rock solid in Paris again."

Now heres how a Fed fan version of Veroniquem would react...

"That arrogant Nadal not giving any credit to Federer yet again! All he is doing is blaming his loss on the surface & altitude! How about giving credit where credit is due for a change! He is just being delusional if he thinks this will not hurt him in RG."

Again that is NOT my opinion :D

Actually Nadal does make a very valid point....not all clay is created equal.

I have played both in Spain and in France and the surfaces are completely different.

The clay in Madrid is sort of a sandy clay....similar to the red clay here in the United States.

But in France the clay is actually made from crushed brick and dirt. Its far slower.
