My congrats to Marcos Daniel

Hello, there. For those that didn't watch today's match between Nadal and Daniel, this is a spoiler.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm writing this thread to congratulate Marcos Daniel. We all know Rafa was quite far of playing his best tennis, but the brazilian played beautifully, that's for sure. Marcos is like the king of challenger tournaments on clay in South America (he did win 5 or 6 challengers in a row in Colombia). The thing is that he has been historically underrated and even disrespected by brazilian fans and commentators. He never had the respect the deserved. In fact, in brazilian foruns yesterday it was quite common to read that it would be hard for him to take a game from Nadal. Marcos certainly doesn't have the game to be among the best, but I've always thought that he could play in a good level against anyone. He's quite closing of retiring, so I hope he'll get the respect that he desearves after this performance today.

Yes he played really well and I also give respect to all the qualifyers who give their all and never give up on a match - quite often against people like Nadal and Federer- but still manage to give us a thrilling time

Yeah, it's true. I've wanted to write it two weeks ago, when re reached the QF of Belgrade after defeating Cañas and Ljubicic. In fact, despite being at that moment the 1st brazilian on atp rankings, the brazilian davis cup coach once again didn't draft him, so he chose to play that ATP 250 on Serbia.

played at a high level for a lot of the match. Made a good showing. I like the way he plays.

if memory serves me, didnt he play nadal in the 1st round of the french last year as well? i think the score line was pretty similar too.

but yes, i give the kid credit. he really tried hard today and the first set especially was very competitive. perhaps we'll see good things from him in the future. i believe guga speaks highly of him. maybe he sees something in him others dont.

he's 30, although he does look young. :) I think nadal maybe played beullci in the 1st round last year.

Bolo is correct, Nadal faced Bellucci last year. He is 21 now and is a great hope for brazilians, but is now in a very bad shape (he did withdraw his match today when serving for the 3rd set after winning the 2nd due to cramps). And in fact Guga is very supportive of Daniel, though they're not close friends. Meligeni also has some positive quotes on him.

This might be the most games anyone gets on Rafa this whole tournament.

highly unlikely imo. He will lose more games to verdasco or murray or djokovic or federer. Verdasco is saying his ankle wasn't in the best of shape last year. Also you just can't always expect the kind of beatdowns that he put on djokovic and federer last year at RG, those were special matches.

I'm sorry again. I'm relativelly new to the forum; this is the first time I create such a thread. I've seen many people doing it just minutes after the match is over, and sometimes the OP doesn't get the reprimand. I didn't mean to cause a turmoil. My intent with this thread wasn't to talk about the result of the match, but about Daniel's performance and specialy about how underrated he is. So I guess this is a good opportunity to ask. When can I post this kind of thread? How many hours/days after the match? Or should a poster never talk about it on this section? Tks.

Sorry for singling you out. If you want to start this thread on the day the match was played, why not just put it in the Results section? Then you can have a discussion about this player when his match with Nadal is still fresh. No one would complain if, say, a week after the match you started initiated a tribute to Daniel page. At that time you'd have to expect to hear about his match with Nadal. Thanks for your post, and sorry once again. Please don't take it personally.

Tks for your tips, pal. It was very useful for me. Next time I'll create the thread in the correct section. No hard feelings at all.

Daniel ranking of 97 does him no justice. He fought bravely today. Pity he could not capitalise on that 3-1 lead in the second set.
I think that's because he's probably better on clay than other surfaces. He played a great match for sure.

I thought he played very well. I hadn't seen him before. I enjoyed his game and spirit. A shame if he hasn't earned his respect. He seemed like a nice fella too!

Very interesting stuff on Daniel. Wow, he beat Canas and Ljubicic? Thanks for the insights. I really admired his playing style.

Off-topic: How do you get that accent over Canas's name?

Yes, he's a nice guy. His cousin is a very famous soccer referee here. The problem with him is that he never believed in his game, so sometimes he seemed kinda satisfied when not losing badly to great players. In Bangkok, 2005, he broke Federer's serve to serve for the set (6-5), but then totally choke, lost in tiebreak and the 2nd set (6-4, and he also lead it). Just after he was very criticised by brazilian press (as Bellucci is now for not being "the new Guga"). He was also criticised for being a "mercenarie", 'cause he always chose to play challengers instead of small ATPs. The thing is that he never received one cent from brazilian tennis confederation, so I really don't blame him. A few years ago brazilian players promoted a boycott against the chairman of the confederation (accused of corruption and another issues); so everyone, including Guga, rejected the draft. Daniel, at the time the 10th best player here, received a sponsor of a private company and then accepted to play. Once again he was criticised. Brazil lost the matches and fell to 3rd division of Davis Cup (never returning to 1st division ever since, because our conditions have gotten even worse nowadays). So he's envolved in some controversies here (unfairly, imo).

About the graphic accent, are you asking how to type it using the keyboard? I'm using a Mac, so it is located left to "number 1". Just press shift + button and then "n". But I don't know if does you keyboard have to be configured to portuguese/spanish. I guess not, because I'm able to use norwegian/german accents as well here.

He lost in straight sets. What is so great about it?
Did you even see the match? He broke Nadal several times and a few times at love. He also hit some beautiful winners during the match and had Nadal on his heels for much of the match. Nadal pulled it out because he is so mentally tough.

Yes Rafa had a tough opponent so I don't know what all the fuss is about. The opposition saying what they are. This guy played some really good tennis and it never surprises me when someone so low in the ranks produces some good tennis because they are so hungry to oust one of the top players .
