Nadal seems to be off his game?

I know it's very early days, however, Nadal doesn't seem to be his usual self. I think 'If' he starts to drop sets in the early rounds there's definitely something going on. We will have to wait and see!!! Makes it more interesting though...which Nadal will show up???

Yes, I've been saying this but no one will acknowledge. His unforced errors are only part of the story. He's talking to himself, getting flustered quite frequently. Quite a few mis-hits, I'm sure he's struggling physically and wont of course discuss it. He's a having a great year, so that's what his fans will lean on, but I think he's now past his prime. My opinion.

It is not very upsetting.. well, it's like Roddick beating Federer in that exhibition, means very little in the grand scheme of things.

I am however, a little surprised with Nadal's game, because even at the Guinot exhibition tourny (against Clement), he seemed a little of his game. Especially the backhand crosscourt didn't seem to work particularly well. Maybe Madrid threw his game of a bit.

Anyway, i'm sure he'll find his form in the coming two weeks. I would be very surprised if Nadal doesn't win Roland Garros.

That's what i said and after today i still have the same opinion about his backhand. His forehand looked a little better, but he was missing more of them too than usual i had the feeling.

Being a Fed fan I hope not of course, but I still think he (Nadal) will Roland Garros though..

He is OK but the pressure is huge. Everyone wants to see Fed with the trophy. Nadal does not like that...

Agree that it seems people want Fed win it so he can "complete" his career... but does that give the most pressure to Fed?

no. the pressure comes from the fact that the no of opportunities are going down, he is getting older and the opposition in getting better.

from his blog today

TODAY'S MATCH. Probably with the answers to your questions on this section I have said it all. Not too many questions about my match today and probably it is better like this. I didn't play great, didn't feel that comfortable on the court as I should have but in the end what counts is that I managed to win. I have to say that also last year I had a bad start. Clearly it is not only because of my (me) but also because the way my opponent, Marcos [Daniel] today, played. As I say, I have had slow starts also in previous years and I am fine with it. Sure I need to improve and get better.

don't know what's going on but hopefully it will sort itself out. If not, he's had an amazing run there, nobody can take those achievements away from him.

My guess is that he's wearing new shoes with thicker souls - thus, he's at a higher altitude, and we all know how altitude interferes with his game.

Yes BUT the pressure will have completely different effect to different people under the same circumstances.

there is no need to hit the panic button...the guy won in straights vs some guy he prob never seen him play, in the 1st round...no big deal...before fed showed up....was normal for players to drop multiple sets in winning a major..

Nadal did make some mistakes today. He was missing some forehands when he was positioned beautifully and not out of balance or anything. I thought it was strange. But maybe he just hasn't gotten into his groove yet. I'd say wait for another 2 or 3 matches before making another judgement.

Nadal will get better each round. I think the clay court season has took some out of him but he will rise to the occasion when needed. They really should have a longer break between Miami and Monte-Carlo.

This is almost the same as 2006 and 2007. Last year he was in his best shape entering RG since 2005 because he lost early in Rome to JCF.

I only saw the last set and a half of r128. he seemed alright, not spectacular, but he won i n straights so what else can you ask? hopefully hewitt makes it to 3rd round. that will be an interesting match.

RG is at a higher altitude than it used to be and Nadal doesnt like it
No, it's because Roland Garros is a brand new tournament played in a brand new stadium and the court is new, rough, uneven, and dusty, and it also plays more like a hardcourt so Nadal doesn't like it.

Nadal also doesn't think a tournament with such different conditions should be played right before Wimbledon.

Quite a statement here, everyone wants to see Fed with the trophy   Who is everyone?

OT:
If we were in a forum I used to visit, you'll be sure that right now somebody with "Everyone" as his nickname would appear

LMAO

I just think his body language seems different from last year. He appears slightly more on edge than i've seen him in previous French Opens. It's probably nothing! Anyway, I'll be watching his body language in the next few rounds just to see how tired he really is.

Only when the standards an individual has set are absurdly high, as is the case with Nadal at the French Open, do people panic and cry that something is wrong after a sound, uneventful straight-sets first-round victory.

I find Nadal is at his best with players he is familiar with. No matter how low down in the ranks a qualifier is I have seen Rafa having to adapt to his game before taking off

Not everyone wants to see Fed win it. I would be disappointed if Fed ever wins RG.
Did Federer steal Mirka away from you or something? :-?

Why would anyone be disappointed in seeing anyone winning a tournament for the first time? It makes no sense.

Nadal hasn't dropped a set or been in a TB so far. Maybe this thread is a tad premature?

Two things:

1) Nadal has been so dominant on clay, that when an opponent gets more than 3 games in a set, people start to raise eyebrows.

2) I would think it's quite normal for top players to drop more games than usual, even if they are way better than their opponent. Unfamiliarity usually favors the underdogs. Hell back in the 90's, it wasn't uncommon for top players to lose their matches to some unknown journeyman.

It has nothing to do with that.. it has to do with his level of play. And his game just seems a little bit off. Nothing to worry about, since it's the French Open and will last 2 weeks. But currently and for the past 2/3 weeks or so, his game just seems a little bit of.

I still think thats part of it though, it's a number of things, not just one explanation. Not even Nadal can keep up 6-2, 6-1 scorelines day and day out in every match. So of course his game will seem off, when he doesn't do that.

You guys are too worried over nothing.

Let's put it in perspective, by beating Daniel, Nadal has set a new record by winning the most consecutive matches at Roland Garros with 29 (beating Borg's 28 consecutive matches).

Pretty cool, eh?

This from the guy who STILL pulls out the mono excuse when Federer loses!
Go tell both Ancic and Isner that mono doesn't affect your tennis no matter how good condition you're in. :-?

If you're just tired from playing tennis, that's your own problem. It means you're out of condition, not that you have a disease that was beyond your control.
