something is fishy do you agree?

I am in a 4.0 league and we are in first place 4-0. All of my players are computer rated and ligit. We beat the defending champions of league they are 3-1. We are playing this coming thursday and they have added a player this week, he is a 24 year old teaching pro who is self rated at 4.0. I am told he is clearly a 4.5 player. What are the rules around this? what should can I do?

adding player

I didn't think you can add players once the league has started. the computer should not allow this new person to be added on to the team. you might want to check with your league coordinator

Maybe it is a section specific thing? Because here in Norcal it is allowed to add players during the season. In fact it is pretty common for teams to continue to recruit and add new players, especially teams that are trying to make a push for playoffs.

You can file a grievance, but you have to have more evidence than what you provided. Did he play college tennis? Did he he hold a National ranking as a junior? If not, just being a 24 year old teaching pro doesn't mean anything. I have seen teaching pros in their 20s that were legit 4.0s.

I have seen at least 4 to 5 teaching pros in the USTA 4.0 league this year in Texas. Being a teaching pro doesn't mean they have a particular NTRP.

After beating a teaching pro in singles in a tourney, he actually told me that teaching alot didn't help his game at all because he was so used to his student's slower balls and not having to move very much while hitting.

Yes! That's how it works in our local league. Once the season has started you CANNOT add new players. Being allowed to do so seems inherently unfair to me.

I'd also agree with the comment others have made about teaching pros. The title is not necessarily indicative of their ability, HOWEVER, you also mention that other players who are familiar with his game say he is a 4.5ish player. I would think he is indeed probably a strong player; otherwise why would the other team be trying to recruit him?

The more I think about this, the more unfair such practices seem to me. To reiterate, such mid-season additions are NOT permitted in my local league, and in my opinion should NEVER be permitted in any local league.

In our leagues, you can add new players at any time during the season. They just have to be registered for the team before they go on court. You can be courtside, register on your smartphone, grab your racket and jump on court.

If the new player is self rated and plays three strong computer rated 4.0 players and wins 6 0, 6 1 or 6 2 he is in danger of being disqualified. In turn all three of his matches would be written off as losses. A strong 4.0 should beat a weak 4.0 so he might not get disqualified with the same scores. If the matches are 6 3, 6 3, they are still considered the same level and he shouldn't get DQ'd but you never can count on that.

If the player lies on his self rating, he should get disqualified at the lower level, his matches will be disqualified and he will be suspended from play for a year. If the captain fills out the self rating and lies, they will both be disqualified and suspended.

According to the experienced player guidelines, I believe that a teaching pro cannot play below 4.0. So in this case, there isn't much the OP can do unless the teaching pro has actual disqualifying experience such as having held a ranking or had college play.

What difference does it make if you add a new player mid-season? At least they prevent adding new players during champions by requiring that the player must play 2 regular season matches to qualify for championship play.

Our league allows adding players after the season starts. I think it is a good thing. One season we had a bunch of players get injured. One guy moved after he lost his job and another guy became very busy at work and was rarely available. If we couldn't add players we would be defaulting 1-2 lines every match.

A question for those who play in leagues that DO allow additions throughout the season: Does this mean that a player is allowed to move from one team (a losing team) to another team (a winning team) as well? In other words, can a player switch teams at any point during the season?

Again, playing in a league that DOES NOT allow ANY additions after league play begins, I just have a real problem with this practice.

We can add new players mid-season where I am as well. All the way up to July. (our season typically runs from then end of May to the beginning of August)

It comes in handy sometimes when you suddenly are short players. Also the USTA wants $$$ so the smarter sections have figured out that it's silly to turn people away.

It's a lot better then defaulting matches which is usually "frowned upon" and is a sign of a bad league. (people pay money and then dont get to play...)

No, because you're talking about two different things.

1) Adding players mid-season

2) Switching Teams

Just because they let you add players mid-season doesn't mean you can grab them from other teams.

If you register for a particular team, the league would have to move you to another team. Ive seen that done before the season starts if someone changes their mind, but I doubt they would do it in the middle of the season.

But even if the league did that for you, you're talking about two totally separate rules.

Agreed. I was just curious.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm just not used to such a rule. If any and all teams are afforded equal opportunity to make additions, I guess it's fair.

This is true. I coach my students 5 days a week and hit weak stuff the entire time. When I go out to play an actual match, it often takes me a few games to get my timing back. Even then, I notice a difference.
