Scream vs. Squeal

There has been talk this year at Wimbledon of umpires cracking down on the loud shrieking by some of the women. I would like an opinion on this - is there a difference between a grunt, and a squeal? I don't mind a healthy Williams scream, but I have to hit the "mute" button when Azarenka or Sharapova take the court. They emit a high-pitched squeal, not as they hit the ball, to add power on the exhale - but after. It's an annoying, ear-splitting sound that's like fingernails on a blackboard!!! Does it really help their game, or is it a sound they make to psych out opponents?

Well i prefer sharapova to serena. I watched serena play silva and on a big point, she was screaming, actually screaming, even when silva was about to hit her shot.
That is just disgusting. The point should be replayed. Sharapova might squeal but its not as annoying as serena

There is a huge difference between a grunt and scream. An example I like to use is the 2005 Wimbledon final between Davenport and Venus. Davenport and Venus were both making noises as they hit the ball...Davenport was grunting, Venus was screaming like she was being tortured or something, even on slice shots. Honestly, Venus, Serena, Sharapova...they are bad. Larcher De Brito is approaching a class all her own. Dementieva is borderline acceptable although her WHOOOOOP-AHHHH gets quite annoying after a while. Honestly...I wish they would crack down and do something like there were rumors about a few years ago...have the decibels read during the matches and if a particular player gets to loud, give them a warning, if they don't stop....default them. To a certain extent it is part of the game and the force you exert on the ball....but after a certain point it becomes quite obvious that it is more of an intimidation tactic and is excessive.

Larcher De Brito is the new queen. I can tolerate the Williamses and Sharapova.

But this teen gives me a serious migraine.

Whether or not one is worse than the other is a question for debate, but whether screaming should be permitted during play shouldn't be. I can't understand how the English, who've always held their national championship to a higher standard don't take a stand against this barbaric, unaesthetic cheating.

Something needs to be done. Although on the BBC today, Larcher de Brito said that they could do what they liked in terms of stopping her grunting (screaming at the top of her lungs) but there would be nothing they could do because it was a natural part of her game. What a load of rubbish - I seriously think that the introduction of penalties for being too loud is a good idea.

Out of all the people that occasionally make noise, Djokovich is the most acceptable. The Williams, Sharapova, Azarenka, De Brito, and Nadal all drive me nuts. I know they say it is a natural part of their game, but I think that it is cheating. If you can get a technical foul in basketball or tossed for arguing in baseball, why can't you be penalized for grunting, squealing, or screaming?

Also interestingly I happened to see her practicing in the afternoon and she was quiet when hitting just as hard in practice, whereas in the match earlier in the day was making quite a loud squeal!!!

Yea I saw that too. It was pathetic. Every shot her scream grew louder than the previous one. It's really a way of show boating if you ask me as the louder screams come one shots where Serena or any other player expects the point to end. It's almost like "oh I bet I could make this winner look so much more dramatic if I yellped a little bit harder!" Please just play tennis.
