Would he have done that if he had an average job?

how do you know whether he would or wouldn't, ruprecht?

what in this video gave your the impression that federer was a snob? i'm not talking in general. i would like to know what in this video fueled your fire. because i'm starting to think that you simply repeat the same thing about federer, murray etc. no matter what the topic is.

provide a specific example of what in this video irked you.

Which bit particularly, the bit re. his RF Foundation, or the Ferdinand drooling over the kit.....? The latter I'd agree with, if he really was texting his friend about the kit and where to get it, then all I can say to that is, er, oh dear...

Every top athlete dominates money to the poor why because they can afford it and it helps there image which we all know Federer is obsessed about.
That`s not really fair...he might actually care about the situation with the children in South-Africa,his mother is south-african.

Yes, what a "snob" for donating his money to educate poor children in Africa! How dare he!

So you think Federer runs his foundation as a PR job and he doesn't actually believe in helping people?

how arrogant of federer to be interviewd

I think Federer's problem is his personality and delivery. To some of us he sounds pretentious, insincere and cheesy. (Not just based on Wimby 2009 but from forming opinions over the years)
Some people don't see this and think he's charming and lovely.
He might be a totally genuine guy. Heart of gold and all.
None of us really know his true nature. We can only guess and go with our instincts based on our own experiences and make comparisons with people that we have already met and know.
Anyone who really claims to know this guy and say he is either a genuine great guy or arrogant and self obsessed are themselves being in danger of looking arrogant.
My instincts say that he is self obsessed and pretentious but I would be glad to be proven wrong.
My girlfriend is a clinical pyschologist and I asked her opinion of RF. She said she couldn't make a proper formulation of anyone without interviewing them in person and asking many very specific questions.
She also had a dig at us forum users as to why we idolise and despise people that we don't even know, and to think about getting a life.

My instincts (and personal experience from having done this myself at some point or another) say that you thought this yourself, but in order to refrain from possible bickering you chose to use your girlfriend as a method of delivering the words, knowing that the majority of the posters here wouldn't make the effort to argue back considering she doesn't post here herself - making the argument pointless.

I could be wrong though ;p

Would you have done that with an average job? I sure wouldn't...but if I was earning big millions every year of course I would be a philanthropist of some type....I don't get what your getting at here.

Maybe I'm just projecting.
I'll try to get her on here. It would be interesting.

And Lawrence, would you like to comment on the rest of my post, which was the main point, rather than just the last incidental sentence.

Hey if i were a pro player i'd donate money to charity as well.
It's just the right thing to do... It's got nothing to do with image or PR or any of that crap...
Grow up people...

agree 100%
My instincts say that he is self obsessed and pretentious but I would be glad to be proven wrong.
As you said above, its really your own opinion.. So im not going to say you're wrong here, because there is no wrong.
In my personal opinion though - from what i've seen anyway; I'd guess that tennis is his #1 priority, though all the exposure/endorsements etc. are something Nike has dropped onto him, he's really loving it. But then again, wouldn't we all love it? Being the face of tennis, arguably the most popular sporting brand in the world, and basically having your OWN brand stem from that. I would love to be able to walk around and see people wearing my logo.
My girlfriend is a clinical pyschologist and I asked her opinion of RF. She said she couldn't make a proper formulation of anyone without interviewing them in person and asking many very specific questions.
Also agree, to some extent.. Some people are just hard to read, while some others may show extremely blatant motives. Really depends on who it is.
In rogers case he's extremely publicized and has a ton of pressure on his shoulders because the journos are eying out his every word, so it really is harder to find out how he is off camera.
But apparently the tour all like him, he displays humble attitude on court for the majority of the time (doesn't scream BOOYA at UE's, doesn't pick fights with umpires, doesn't waste time between points, etc).
Also, although he has his fame, wealth and decent looks (no h.omo), he has Mirka for a wife - someone he probably believes would make a good mother and be a supporting wife - as opposed to a supermodel he could've easily picked out.
So, from what I can see in the media, matches, his life in general, etc. he seems like a decent guy, for real. Until I see otherwise that's just what I'm going to continue believing.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Lawrence.
I admit my views of Federer are mellowing after doing more research - reading articles, posts and looking at links. And reading intelligent, unbiased posts from people like yourself.
I hope my negative opinions of Federer weren't just based on blind prejudice and ignorance.
I really coudn't tell you specifically, off hand, why Federer started to annoy me after being a great admirer of him. I do admire his fantastic tennis.
Think the image I had of him changed over the years.
Maybe he has changed and it would be hard not to with his success.
Changed into what. I don't know but probably somthing better than I imagined.
Cheers.

Fedex, Lawrence, can I just say that many people on this forum could learn a lot from both your most recent posts - not just regarding Roger, but applying your thought patterns, attitudes and honesty to any pro player that is heavily in the public eye and has every word scrutinized.

For once, a thread that hasn't turned out into an immature slagging match of the "my dad's bigger than yours" ilk, and I hate Mr X because of Y and Z.

Again, cheers guys.

I pay enough taxes.

Morron.

The Swiss pay more taxes than you, moron.

Didn't stop Federer.

Then again, I'd see someone like you doing something like this...

Maximo: What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?
Mugatu: Derek, this is just a small...
Maximo: I don't wanna hear your excuses! The building has to be at least... three times bigger than this!

Oh of course, Federer doesn't have much money in the bank...

How stupid of you.

How old are you? I'm starting to think that 9 is severely overshooting it.

Your parents make... 100k pounds a year being extremely generous if your parents are anything like you. Federer makes exponentially more than that amount. Federer will both pay substantially more in taxes, as well as have more money in the bank.

Once you get off your allowance and get a job, you'll understand.

Thanks Speranza.
I think a lot of posts get way out of hand and tempers fray due to misinterpretation, people flying off at tangents and, at worse, insult.
Usually in that order.

Look who's talking, the deluded ******* moron.

Im not the one posting picture's and annotating them like a muppet...

Your one of the typical arrogant Americans.

No wonder you have feelings for Federer.

With a self esteem like yours, everybody's a snob.

We'll just leave it at that. Hopefully you can grow up to be a decent human being. Some of us have to get there the hard way, and it's obviously the road you (or circumstance) have chosen for yourself. Cheers.

you're overestimating his intelligence-zoolander's intelligence>maximo's intelligence

exhibit no.1:

--------

Federer was wearing a pair of underpants which said, "Sucked in Roddick, I beat you again loser." Apparently a few ball boys saw it in the locker room after the match.

Federer is just so arrogant. He says Nike gave him the underpants after the match, but I don't believe him.

Maximo

Any link????

Don't worry, i'll always remember you as the cocky deluded *******...

I see Murray's colon got back its internet connection...Did you make a complaint to the internet provider after Murray lost in Wimby SF?

You really need to come out of there sometime and breathe some fresh air...

One of the best scenes ever.

And this interview is further proof that he reads these boards.

"I thought the jacket was a bit of a criticism" "Military jacket"

All straight from TW users. Gotta love it :D

So Federer is a "snob" for donating his money and he's a "snob" for not donating his money.

OK, I see you point. Shame on Roger for helping poor people.

BTW, no, not every top athlete donates their money to help the poor. I've never heard of Sampras donating his money to help poor people nor a lot of pro football (American), basketball, and baseball players. Have you heard of Davydenko donating his money to help the poor?
