It seems to me that the flat bombs that he used to produce have been replaced with spinny shots that don't trouble his opponents as much. Am I just remembering incorrectly?
Is Tsonga hitting "spinnier" shots than before?

Not just against Shuettler but during the French Open. I feel as though his style has become less imposing since he switched to his wide body Wilson Kobra. I'd like to see the Tsonga of 2008, but he hasn't presented himself since January of '08.

I don't agree since he hasn't really used his aggressive style since his Australian Open run. Not long after the 2008 AO he came to Miami to play the Miami Masters and looked terrible. As it turns out, it wasn't his style that was the problem, rather it was a knee injury that kept him out of the next few tournaments. He was on the comeback trail for much of last year.
This year he seems to be moving at full capacity but he's trying a new, more spin based (consistency based) style and hasn't had the dominating results that I think he's capable of producing.
Of course, it could be that I'm either remembering nostalgically or I'm overestimating Tsonga's potential, but I'd like to see the exciting swashbuckler of old.

He is using more spin to get consistency, but like said before using an all or nothing game plan will not make you a consistent player.

I don't agree. It seems to me that he has those days when he hits like a behemoth and those days when he wants to hit spin. For example the last three times that he' beaten Djokovic (Bangkok, Shanghai, Marseille), He's hit hard/flat CONSISTENTLY. When he played Verdasco, Nalbandian and maybe Fed etc. He hit more spinny. Thats my two cents.

I heard that he had enjoyed playing with the Babolat Aeropro and that he's waiting for his Wilson contract to expire so that he can sign with Babolat.
If we, the fans, can notice a change in style, I'm sure his trainers and coaches have also noticed it and encouraged it. I hope they know what they're doing because he hasn't quite lived up to the promise he showed at the '08 AO.

he hasnt change his style of play. what he has changed is his racquet. Its more spin friendly than his previous racquets, thus hes hitting spinnier forehands, but his technique remains the same.

Yes, because it's not like he's done anything since his AO run.

I think it's 2 things:
1) Consistency: In my eyes I think this was worked on during the clay season as an attempt to try adapt Jo's game slightly better to the surface
2) Confidence: When Jo gets confident, as exhibited in his match today, he seems to flatten it back out a lot more. Once he's got confidence behind it he's much more likely to bring it out. Ultimately I think the idea is for Jo to use more consistent point construction, and then to let his power fly at the right time.

Yeah, of course he's applying more spin nowadays. I remember him playing Roddick in Melbourne a couple of years ago. He was 2-0 up, and was serving extremely well, but his game from the back of the court was all about bashing. He lost that match, but even then one could see that he had loads of potential.

lmao... the racket doesnt change that much, esp to pro players, they know how to adapt, he has changed his style slightly, but i think ppl are reading too much into it, the only time he really played amazingly well with his forehands was AO 08, besides that he always had a spinny forehand and a random flat one once in a while.

I think he needed more spin. He played absolutely crazy some matches (the Nadal match was outworldly) but you can't be a consistent top 10 with two or three inspired days a year.
I think it's a good move to follow the Roddick's path.

I think he needs to fine tune his game, and balance the need for consistency and spinny shots with aggressive, flat shots at the right times. If he can do so, coupled with his very good serve and net play, he will feature at the business end of tournaments and slams much more.
