Have you seen a game where Federer has served worse?

than yesterday's final? Wow I swear it seemed like he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in yesterdays final. Quite a shame because that was the difference in the game.

Wrong.

Delpo Served under 25% for the first 1 and a half sets... as you conveniently forgot to mention.

Delpo outplayed Fed. Get over it.

delpo served under 25%??? look at the bull sh1t that is coming out of your mouth. Look at the stats, he served 54% the first set. and Rog served about 41% IIRC.

Lol 25%, this aint the WTA son.

Federer's struggles seemed quite similar to Australian Open 2009 and somewhat reminiscient of Wimby 2008. Both the serving problems and the inability to convert more than a fair share of break point opportunities. Watching him float his half-hearted backhands long on break points was tough to stomach.

nope, difference in game was that Potro did not cruble like Fed thought he would. Delpo did not serve that well either my friend. Just spinning shots in to get into the point is hardly serving well. Just accept the fact that Delpo's depth hurt Fed...and his heart and will were huge factors.

No, the serve did not cost Fed the match..the opponant did. He had 5 sets of tennis to win...

He sure seemed to be all smiles in the second set when he played that shot behind his back and smiled about it. Delpo did not like that at all. No, at that point, you could tell Fed thought it was going to be business as usual and that his opponant would just go away.

He wasn't playing those cute little behind the back shots in set 4 and 5....wasn't as relaxed...not as comfortable. I think he regretted hitting that shot because he knew it pissed Delpo off and deep down I know that Fed was not trying to be condescending...but it looked that way.

nope.....don't argue now, go away if you need to but don't argue....in a 3 out of 5 set match both players have opportunities to win....Fed played off the charts good in the first set. Delpo got his feet under him and out gutted Fed. Live with it. He will.

The bottom line was his serve sucked more than Federer's for much of the match. Delpo didn't even show up to the match until the middle of the second set.

Verdict: Federer outplayed (again, get over it)

yeah, which is why federer won the first, and when del potro started serving better, he starting winning?

The serve mattered. the worse server in each set lost that set. Get over it.

im not trying to make excuses but the roger serve was not on at all today and it affected his overall game. not taking anything away from delpo but it would have been a different result had the serve been on song!

Delpo simply outplayed Fed over the course of 5 sets.

Fed at his best should beat Delpo at his best.... the serve really let Fed down yesterday... once he missed the 1st ball, the 2nd ball cant kick over Delpo's 2hbh, and it felt like Roger started every point on the wrong foot.

anyway - it was a great final, both men tried really hard to work with what they had, which goes without saying for Fed, who always have plans A, B and C on his racket, but Delpo also make some great adjustments.... he didn't have a stellar serving day either, but finally found the range on his FH.

Delpo didn't outplay Fed. Both sets delpo won before the 5th had to go to tiebreakers. Fed just served very badly. Both had a ton of unforced errors. Serve was the difference. More a matter of getting the good serves at the right time. This time they just did not come.

I don't see how anyone can say that Fed's serve wasn't the key factor, from his side, in him losing. That's under his control. If he serves well, he wins the second set after breaking Del Potro. Then it's basically over. But his serve was awful all day, and when Del Potro started playing really well, it caught up to him. He still made it a 5-setter, though. 2 tie-breaks. That's clearly where Federer normally wins; his serve was the big factor in the tie-breaks too, of course.

But like he said, it isn't possible to play your best every time. A few years ago, he didn't play his best, but he beat Djokovic in the USO final. At the FO SF, he gutted out a win over Del Potro after a bad start. Now Del Potro gutted out one over him after a bad start. He certainly earned it; he won, and thus was the better player overall in the final.

It was obvious that Fed starting serving badly when Delpo's ground game picked up pace. Therefore, Delpo's playing forced Federer to tighten up and serve poorly... since he knew the groundtroke return that would come on a weak serve. Stop with the excuses.

DelPo served @ 54% in the first set, whilst Fed served at 41%
DelPo served @ 60% in the second set, whilst Fed served at 44%

You should probably stick to some real stats there Bud =p The only set Fed outserved DelPo was the third (61% to 60%). All credit to Delpo for serving so well during the last 2 sets though, Fed was languishing at 53% and 54% whilst DelPo got up to 74% and 78% respectively.

I'm not sure I'd say Roger served worse than he ever has before, but it was definitely an area of his game that cost him dearly yesterday.

Lol! Thanks for correcting me. It just FELT like 25%. He was 1 for 9 on first serves after game 3 :)

Even so... 54% is also pathetic.

You are full of it. The statistics prove that you are wrong. Federer was serving badly from the start of the match until the finish. He served badly even when he was dominating Del Potro.

Right, he never served well the whole match. But he didn't start serving worse when Del Potro started playing better. He was actually serving the lowest in the 1st set when he was dominating. So to say he tightened up on serve because of Del Potro's game is non-sense. Serve isn't really significantly affected by the other player. Federer wasn't going for faster serves than he was the rest of the tournament. He was going for the same serves as before, just missing them.

It happens.

Del Potro certainly still could have lost yesterday and played a great match to win it. But it was basically a match where Federer had all the chances to win and threw them away. Or rather, he just couldn't take advantage of them because of his serving.

This wasn't a case of both guys going out there and playing there absolute best, and one guy has to lose.

Truth is,it doesn't matter how it FELT for you as obviously your feeling is way off mark.

And no 54% isn't pathetic and even if it is what does that make Fed's 40% then? You're so full of it.

I only agree on you that overall Delpo did outplay Fed,just like he outplayed everyone else this tourney.

Well at least he didn't get crushed like Nadal. So let's see in an off year when Fed is not playing well he wins 2 slams and makes all 4 finals. In Nadal's monster year of 08 which he will probably never do again, he also only wins 2 slams and does not make all 4 finals. Hmmmm. I'd say you will need the tissue next year much more than me, keep it.

In the first set Fed hit 16 winners and made only 8 UEs, whilst DelPo hit 11 winners and made 6 UEs. Roger played some excellent tennis in the first set, and DelPo wasn't playing particularly poorly, in fact it was the set with DelPo's best Winner/UE ratio during the match.

I'm starting to think that what you...believe...is being swayed considerably by a somewhat biased viewpoint

I don't think Delpo played like crap in any set of the final so we'll agree to disagree.

But overall I get your logic, when Fed wins a set=his opponent played like crap but when Fed loses a set=he played his best but opponent just played his game.Gee it must be such an easy thing to beat Fed.

He definitely picked up his level of play a few games into set 2. At that point it actually started to become competitive.

I wasn't able to watch the final but from what I heard it was Fed's worst, I don't know but I still would give JMDP credit for holding his own when it counts and not fold like other players when facing Fed, Knowing Fed's game(a player who always find a way how to win when not playing at his best) JMDP really deserved it and I can't find any excuses for Fed's game coz I know as good as Fed's game is he can adapt and adjust to any weapons his opponent would bring........he just got beat by a better man in the final, also JMDP must be in his best ever for beating the top two player consecutively on his way to the title........

I happy that there a new champion, Federer wins too much but his serve should have been on. If delpo won in that situation it would be much more prevalent. A win is a win. PLus *******s, Fed has won enough already and i believe he still have some great 5 sets matches along the way in grand slams.

i didn't deny that. but you're acting like the serve was only part of the story. for the majority of the match, Federer was matching del potro in rallies, and holding his own. until that fifth set, federer did not allow del potro the luxury of a legitimate break (holding serve enough times and breaking enough times to win the set without a tiebreak). so for the majority of the match this was even. del potro merely stepped it up in the fifth, or perhaps also federer's level dropped further.

When was the last time fed served 11 double faults? One actually cost him the 4th set TB... But throughout this tournament, i saw this coming. His serve was bailing him out of tough situations (e.g. numerous times against hewitt), and it was only a matter of time before the law of averages caught up with him (he got into those situations primarily because of shanks & careless play).

Even then, I didn't expect the double faults. Given the DFs, it was the worst I've seen him serve

He sure seemed to be all smiles in the second set when he played that shot behind his back and smiled about it. Delpo did not like that at all.

Delpo pulled the ball out of his pocket & threw it at Fed's feet, as a joke, when they were going to sit down. Fed replied with a smile.

Ah stupid Federeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesians bitter crying because their hero couldn't close the deal on the newcomer. Shame. Fed will go down as the worst loser in GS finals history!

Yes, it's true that Federer had a low serve percentage, but that's because of the first 2 sets. He served below 45% in both of them.

In the last 3 sets, his percentage was 56% (56/100). And it's in those that the match was decided.

On Topic:

Yes, Federer served horrendously, but one never knows how the match would've gone if he had served well. It might have been a tighter 5 setter with the same outcome...or Federer in 3...or Federer in 4...or DelPo in 3...or DelPo in 4...who knows?

Yep, Potro came back and caught Fed off guard. I think Fed thought he had it wrapped up. When things got dragged out he was upset and it hurt his game.

Fed acted like this wasn't a bad defeat but I think it really hurt him.

Who wants to be humbled by a 20 yr old.
Have a chance of 6 straight UO's taken away.
That would of been a great feat to put in his accomplishments and Fed knows that.

And Fed's loss, IMO, came from not controlling himself mentally, and he knows this.

Things are more interesting.

Fed lost that match in the second set. He was up a break and let it slip and then lost the tiebreaker.

He had Delpo dead down 2 sets, but let him in it.

It was a close match.

However at this point, fed must serve around 60% for a match to beat the top 6 or so. He did not, delpo played fantastic in the remaining 3.5 sets (he did lose the 3rd, but was still playing strong).

Fed went 2-2 in major finals. Not a bad year :)
