Thanks for the pics. What's the 2nd stencil on the EXO 3 Rebel that the Filipino is using?

Im not sure... but I think it suppose to be a ribbon. This is in tribute for the late Philippine President Cory Aquino.

All the audience wore a yellow ribbon.

Ok thanks. I thought it was a new string company or one I've never heard of.

I think he was talking about the inscription (O) on the strings. Anyways, the racket seems blurry, the "ribbon" you are referring to may just be a rubber band or something a like.
Anyways, I have read that Huey and Mamiit won the dubs so they are up 3-0 on the tie. That's good news. That kid from CDO (Casey or Nino was it) is not playing in this tie?

It's like a regular clay court but instead of crushed red pottery (like red clay) or whatever it is they put on top of green clay, they put crushed seashells on top of the clay.

Last time I was at that court was years ago when I went home to visit and Joseph Lizardo was playing a DC match against some Indonesian player.

and... any particular type of shell ?
(you know... some players could be oyster specialists while others could prefer to play on nautilus or mussels, who knows ?) ;)

What ever happened to Davis Cup? I remember as a kid in the late eighties with Pat Cash on court playing, and team captain Neal Frazer lounging back on a massive big recliner.. Now they have lawn chairs?

The Statham brothers are based in Australia yet they play for New Zealand. I hope these twins make it good in their career.

Great post! Was that Treat Huey (*sp) that you had pictured for the Phillippines? Good to see more Balik-Bayans going back to play for PI!

Also, crushed shell courts play similar to har-tru here in the states but can be a bit slicker b/c the crushed shell can be alot finer than normal clay. Also sometimes there will be small chunks of the shell left over in the process and can create some unexpected bounces!

great pics

Yeah... it is Treat Huey. He played doubles with Cecil Mamiit.

NZ tennis

Just wondering for those regular kiwis on here like timnz, chelseakiwi etc

What did you think of onny parun's ideas on radiolive today?

Ian smith was talking bout nztennis "decline" since the late 90's.

Onny said things about the current nz structure was strange and not achieveing anything...eg mcgraw, walker etc.

Then he said nz players have to try to be all-court even serve and volley
because any baseliner nzer just gets crushed by any decent european junior.

Partly agree with onny with regards to nztennis, but it's a diff situation nztennis is in.....many reasons why nz can't get a player in the top 300

despite the fact clubs here are *reasonably* cheap to join compared to other
countries.

the red head in the pics I assume in dan-king turner....

NZ tennis lost a huge amount back in 2004/05 when simpson and lewis went overseas...i think that was *a* nail in the coffin for nz tennis short term.

what are your thoughts?

Top seed I was wondering Is Treat Huey rated in the ATP? How old is this guy? Mamiit is getting old so who's taking the torch? If i can remember correctly Philippines has a bunch of talented players in their roster with the likes of Roland So and Felix Barrientos some years ago, I mean this guys can really play world class level and just needed much more exposure internationally which I assumed they didn't get.......I was in the Philippines when they were against Sweden some years ago, I think Philippines got blanked in that tie but RS and FB made me an impression with their skills and they fought it hard against a more seasoned and superior opponents.......

His present ranking is singles atp#948 and doubles #234 as of 2009.

Treat Huey is also part of the growing trend of Filipino American players that grew up playing inthe US and go back home to PI to play davis cup and get additional funding/support they may not get back in the US. Believe Cecil Mammit was one of the more notable players to do this.
PI has some good home-gown players like Johnny Arcilla and a few others i think.

Which I think will bode well for Arcilla and the rest. Mamiit and Taino have actually played in the ATP tour so they know what it's like out there. I hope this situation will be looked in as a positive influence rather than making potential drama out of it. The PI team needs as much help as they can get when it comes to tennis.

Some people in PI says that the government needs to come up of a very good long term program when it comes to tennis. People who run the program are there for more than 20 years. They must not rely on recruiting imports (cecil, taino, huey..etc) and pay them huge fees. Some of the young "genuine" pinoy players are complaining because they were not giving them a chance to compete abroad. Fees are as high as $10k-$5k per davis cup tie per player. I just dont know how true are these but that is the word around. I hope someone from PI can someone confirm this. Peace!

I was wondering after winning this against NZ, where would the PI next year? Are they breaking into the World Group? What country will be their next opponent? I'm sorry, I am not very familiar with the Davis Cup set up........

Well this is how I see it. Arcilla and the other locals should try and "learn" from Mamiit and Taino ( and these guys are getting older) since these guys have rubbed elbows at one point with the tour players while they are on the payroll. The only way the local guys will get noticed is when they play better than the Fil Am boys. With all politics and red tape around(sorry I'm just trying to call it as it is), Arcilla et al needs to focus on the positives and make use of what they have at this point. Playing better might get them noticed and get a chance to play outside.
