Gimmelstob to Leif: If anybody's going to lose their job, it's going to be you

That's Gimmelstob covering the Spain DC.

More of Gimmelstob's scintillating "he got leverage on the outside of the ball by using his off hand" color commentary. It's like a lesson in biomechanics. But no love lost between him and Leif, I forgot his last name.

No love lost, I think. Shiras was making a harmless "your job is safe now" joke and Gimelstob struck back. And Gimelstob is a well-known jackass.

Do they call these matches from the US? I don't think TC bothers to send them overseas.

I'd love to see Federer smack Gimelstob with his US Open runner's up plate...
And then say "That's the closest you'll ever get to a grand slam final!" :p

Gimelstob just shouted "shalom" after one of the Israeli's hit a nice winner. Ok, no wonder who he's rooting for.

Justin and Leif are good friends. They often tease each other on the air. They are both probably a bit loose from getting up so early 2 days in a row since they are calling these matches from Santa Monica.

Justin's not rooting for anyone, barring a miracle Spain wins this and everyone knows it. He often brings the yiddish if he's calling any match with a fellow Jewish player, he's just having fun.

Why would he be yelling "peace"?

Mazel tov would be appropriate (congratulations)

And to top it off he doesn't even know Hebrew, let alone tennis. LOL

In context it makes sense as the word means more than "peace".

Ever do something that "wakes someone up" and say "hello" as in drilling a winner.

Same thing.

Gimelstob is such a loser. He talks about how much he used to sweat and it's so disgusting, nobody wants to hear about that ****** and his sweat problems. He's also a pretty crappy commentator.

At least he has one person that likes him..

+1. He just ruins the whole match for me. He's such a toad.

Haven't heard that one before. When is someone like a toad? What human characteristics are being attributed to the toad or vice versa? Is it the croaking which is equal to a lot of talking?

I like JG. seems like a pretty cool guy off the court. someone that would actually talk to the fans. Unlike most of the jerks on tour.

He never achieved a level where he could be compared to others who are hounded by fans.

I understand your point, but he was still a tour level player and people knew who he was. He played a long time. I know a few athletes and they are not at all well known, yet they get lots of attention when they are out. JG is far more known than these guys, so I just think he gets some attention as well. I never met him, so what do I really know. But he just seems like an all-right guy, more down to earth than most athletes are...and that is what I was getting at.:)

But why do you seem to hate the guy so much? He seems harmless. So what if he sometimes says stupid things...we all do.

gimelstob is a slob. i never liked his matches when he was a player and i never have liked his commentating. he comes off as snide and condescending when he has no right to be. he's the mean guy in the group that no one likes. and his voice sounds like he's talking through his nose every word. high and grating.

He has many more than one, just not on this forum. Either way, he's not losing sleep over it, so have at it.

honestly, i don't understand why people on this board don't like him. he was never that great of a player by professional standards but he played his heart out and tried 100% in every match that i saw. sure he doesn't have that good of a commentating voice and maybe says somethings that don't make sense to everyone. However he is a great charismatic guy and doesn't deserve the criticism he gets... i think he is funny too.

also because of the stupid things he said about anna Kounikova that time but some of the derogatory things people say on this forum are equally bad and sometimes far worse.

He probably doesn't lose sleep over it and good on him.

But as he is in the public eye as a tennis commentator. And the people here in these forums are some of the demographic that he is trying to inform in regards to the sport called tennis. Then it doesn't look real good for him if he wants to make a living through tennis in the media. Particularly if the public that he is supposed to be informative for doesn't like him ;)

Good luck with that.. Its cute to be the silly guy that says the odd thing out of place. But this guy is simply not very likable to most of the people I have met or talked to.. I just feel that at his age that he would kind of get the fact that he is always the only guy laughing when he talks..

I dont mind Gimelstob too much. Shiras is terrible though, he takes stating the obvious to a level that it has never reached before.

Gimelstob achieved a lot considering he may have had the worst body in the history of the ATP. His upper body was prone to being quite overweight, and his calves were the size of a parakeets. How he could even run for a set was a testimony to how badly he wanted it. If he had been born with a set of legs even, he might done some serious damage.

That passion for the game and life spills into his commentary. Which in this day and age of lifeless robotoid fans and players alike, doesn't sit too well.

JG is a complete idiot. Listening to him on TC made me actually turn off TC during the US Open whenever he was commenting.

I enjoy watching doubles on TV, but during a Paes / Dlouhy match, he couldn't say anything positive about Dlouhy, and constantly ridiculed Dlouhy. Luckily the Bryan brothers were interviewed, and provided some positive commentary.

Contrary to JG's comments, Paes / Dlouhy must have been done some things right, since they eventually went on to win the US Open.

I guess some other viewers felt the same about JG, since after that particular Paes / Dlouhy match, I didn't have to listen to any more commentary from JG (or Leif, another idiot).

also because of the stupid things he said about anna Kounikova that time

It wasn't just "stupid." Go back and reread them. They were made against Kournikova and WTA players in general. And see what exactly he said about her. It was far more serious than a stupid drunk remark. It is a shame that other ATP players had nothing to say about it. Probably because of his connections.

Make no mistake about it - this is about money. His friends came to his rescue (behind the scenes) to ensure that his post-playing career flourishes. Networks were running his spots till people wrote them letters.

As I've said previously, I find these "Gimelstob-mouthpiece" comments rather creepy. Re: his sleep patterns, do you sleep next to him?

To address the issue: I have always disliked him as a commentator. Too much of an air-grabber, his ****e-eating grin is bothersome to no end. He presents the appearance of a dolt who stole candy and is unsuccessfully trying to hide the fact from the public.

LOL..as if Anna is any better of a person? Get real, she is huge biatch. what has she done with her fame? oh yea, make calenders, play with Enrique and hit tennis balls for the WTT. that girl could have done a world of good for people that need help.

This is a good point. His 1 handed BH was pretty streaky, too.

I don't want to play dimestore psychiatrist here, but let's profile Gimel for a minute here.

Jersey kid, successful family, a bit of a nerd if it weren't for tennis,
gets a full ride at a PAC 10 school ... IN WESTWOOD,
extrovert with Hollywoodish influences and opportunities around him,
reasonable results in pro tennis,
guested in the booth while injured,
opportunistic kid who wanted to justify not going into one of the traditional careers a nice Jewish boy ought to pursue,
influenced by movies like SWINGERS,
wants very badly to remain relevant, while living in Los Angeles,
fights for his right to parrrrtayyy,
irks the tasteful minority while intriguing the mainstream fratboy fan,
and appears poised for success in the world of sports broadcasting in America.

If we're looking for integrity and class here, we ought to look elsewhere.

I'm personally not a fan of Gimelstob's simply because he comes of somewhat self-righteous. Roddick used to have a similar attitude but I think he's backing off it a bit. Also, Gimelstob taking a shot a Kournikova has put him pretty low in my book. I'm not even a fan of hers but did she really deserved to called out the way he did it regardless if she is a b*tch or not? I don't think so.

Blaming the victim is obviously your response.

And yes, she has participated in numerous charity events.

And yes, her personal life should be of no concern to the Gimelstob or you.

It probably runs in his family. Someone who knows his family wrote a letter to Inside Tennis. It seems his father has one hellish temper. But that is no excuse once someone becomes an adult. He needs to understand that life has dealt him a set of genes and he has to make the best of it.

The problem is not him - it is the Agassis, the Federers, the Nadals, and those in the tennis industry who have chosen to gloss over his issues.

IMO, Gimelstob needs to just back off the pedal a little. I think he's trying too hard to be funny. One of the best pairings on TV ever was Cliff Drysdale and Fred Stolle. But, they started off slow and didn't develop their on-screen bantering until they'd settled in. Gimelstob started from day one trying to coin his phrase and be unique, so much so that he comes off as annoying. He also has a tendency to ramble a good bit and use dramatic phrasing where it really isn't appropriate. I hope he can improve, but so far I would rather listen to most anyone else.

I personally have always like Leif Shiras and find him more down to earth and possessed of an instant credibility when he says something. The guy is rock solid, doesn't talk too much, and is really kind of the cornerstone side of any broadcast he's involved in.

Gimelstob was a good diver. If there is anything about Gimelstob that people will remember him for it will be his diving ability. I remember a few years back at Wimbledon, he played Hewitt and I think he dove over 10 times. It was just a crazy number.

In all honesty.. No self respecting man would be even talking about Anna Kournakova's life on a message board. I man lame-o..

Who cares...

It was also a running joke among the other pros... Gimelstob would dive when he didn't have to or when he didn't have a chance... I've heard Courier make several remarks about Gimelstob diving...
