This thread was made by another poster but it seems to have been deleted. Anyway I thought it was interesting so I will remake it. How many combined slams do you believe Henin and Clijsters will win next year.

Hard to say. Clijsters will likely be one of the favorites at the Australian, Henin will be to rusty there in my opinion, but she could be a possible spoiler. One of them will take the French, Serena has no shot there in my opinion with them back in the picture. Wimbledon will be the toughest, it is both of their weakest surfaces but if Dementieva can challenge there either of them can. The US Open could go any which way. I'll go out on a limb and say 2....but it could be more or less.

As I said in the other thread I think 3 slams for the Belgians next year.
AO - Clijsters, French - Henin, Wimbledon - Serena/Sharapova, US Open - Henin.

Henin's game is quite suitable for grass. If she comes back hungry she could take Wimbledon this time.

Can we just see how the start of 2010 goes before this crazy threads.

People make it sound like Henin went out on a high...she was losing to the likes of Jankovic and Ivanovic (ehh ******** statement) Safina and Schiavone in 2008...seriously. Yippie Doo Clijsters won a slam when she came back..what are the odds of both doing it sorry for being a pessimist but highly unlikely. Hell what are the odds of Clijsters even winning another one? They could very will get all 4 and very well get none. Neither would overly suprise me. Let see how they do after the first slam of 2010 before we get excited.

There is alot of crazy in your post. First of all while Henin had some bad losses in early 2008 she has never lost a match to either Jankovic or Ivanovic. It is best to check ones facts before making such false statements. Clijsters won a slam in only her 3rd tournament back, and would have won many slams back in her prime but for some time off with injuries, a bit of bad luck, a very early retirement, and most important the fact the womens field then was 5 times better than what it is now. Yet she is unlikely to win another one, LOL!

I think it's a pretty good indicator of how they'll do when Kim can come back at the beginning of the summer hard court season and still win the US Open. Henin in her prime was even better than Kim and she's very committed to this comeback.

With both back 100% and focused, and with the current women's field today, I don't think 3 slams between the two is out of the question.

Your right I am sorry it was Safina who she lost too and Sharapova I got confused it was Serena who lost to Jankovic at the AO. Either way she lost to Safina someone who was just number 1 on the tour for a while and a huge choker. I mixed up losses your right I should check. Clijsters is also a lot older. There is a good chance she doesn't win another slam. There is a good chance she does. This is Kim Clijsters the women who found ways to lose the big matches. (POints to 2001 final vs Capriati) I am supposed to believe though Henin and Clijsters will come back next year and easily grab 4 slams? Its not like Serena will roll over and die? Which one of them will magically win wimbledon? AND EVENTUALLY...some other women will appear. Hell

Its so easy to pencil them in for three of the four slams. Honestly Clijsters went on a run she wasn't doing hot really prior to the US Open. She had a QF and a 3R..she lost convincingly to Safina and lost to Jankovic as well. It's not like she came back and dominated either, she went on a phenomenal run and deserved that slam, but a run like that is going to be hard to reproduce. I guess I want to see MORE RESULTS before I crown the two of the combining for all the slams next year

Clijsters win felt like more of a Goran moment then Agassi 99.

LOL Clijsters is not at the point in her career Goran was at in 2001. Goran was literally finished with all his injuries, he had been a shadow of himself for years at that point. His Wimbledon title was a gift from the gods. Kim is only 26, fully healthy, and physically as good as ever.

How would winning Wimbledon be so magical. The last 2 Wimbledons for women have been so desultory on the womens side some Chinese nobody ranked 133 or something was in the semis in 2008 and Safina who is a joke of a grass court player in the semis this past year. Other than the Williams the current womens field is even more clownish on grass than it is on clay (which is saying something) and Venus will be 30 years old by next years Wimbledon. Dementieva has been the 3rd best grass court player behind the Williams the last 2 years and had match point vs Serena this year. This is Dementieva, someone who isnt in the league of Henin or Clijsters on any surface. Anyway for those predicting 3 of 4 presumably Wimbledon would be the least likely of the 4 anyway.

Kim's losses to Safina and Jankovic were her 1st and 2nd tournaments back so she was just getting used to playing on the tour again. Plus she had very tough draws in both tournaments and as she wasnt ready yet to dominate even the top players of todays mediocre WTA just yet she survived some tough matches to get to those two, which took up mental and emotional energy. As her ranking goes up her draws will get easier, and now with a slam under her belt she will be that much more confident and the mental midgets of todays WTA like Safina or Jankovic more afraid of her again. After all with the Russians, Serbian, ova, and evas of today you just get them a bit afraid and all you have do is show up on court to win especialy in a slam. They make even Kim the mental midget of the elite of the early 2000s look like Xena the Warrior Princess by comparision.

Serena is a threat of course, but she is extremely vurnerable to quality competition at this point in her career. Whether people want to believe it or not the fact is she has benefited the most from people like Henin, Clijsters, and Sharapova being out of commision these last 2 years. Serena for a 5 yer span won only 2 slams, yet amazingly wins 3 of the last 5. Does anyone really believe this was some grand resurgence of form. No she is still just as out of shape and half commited to tennis at this point. She isnt anywhere near the player she used to be when she was so great and dominant in the early 2000s. The reason she has done better the last year and a half is only because these others I mentioned were not around, and instead replaced by lame excuses of slam contenders like Safina, Jankovic, Dementieva, etc...who can play really well in regular tour events but can never win when it really matters.

I already broke this down on another threat but the overall head to heads mean nothing since neither Henin or Kim came into their primes until late 2002 for Kim, and Henin in mid 2003. Kim from late 2002-2003 played Serena virtually even on hard courts, one convincing straight set win, one convincing straight set loss, and a tough 3 set loss where she choked away a 5-1 lead. Serena is half the player she was then, and even then Kim was virtually her equal when they stepped on court. Henin is even more clear. She is 4-1 vs Serena in slams since the start of 2003. Serena hasnt even won a slam since Wimbledon 2003 with Henin in the draw.

Eventually some other women will appear. Havent we been saying that for 2 years now, LOL! It will happen someday, but that women aint on the horizon other than the overhyped "I wish she coulds" like Azarenka, Wozniacki, and Oudin.

Sorry Henin losing to Bartoli in wimbledon and neither grabbing a slam while Venus playing 10 tournaments a year could roll into wimbledon while the two were in their primes and rack up a few wimbledons doesn't make me think they really stand a chance.

Serena is threatened by the competition at this point in her career while the other two are not? Serena who has been playing the tour week in and out the past two years won 3 of 8 slams and been to 4 of the slam finals is threatened by this competition but the two players who have been of the tour are not at all threatened by it? You say I am crazy. Henin at her best only won 3 of the last 5 slams from 03-04 and two of them were won with the absent of the most dominant hardcourt player at the moment..name that player? Closest she came to that was 2006 when she made 7 slam finals out of 8 but only won 3..that was Henin's best. Mind you in 2006 where was Serena Williams? Kim Clijsters was missing in 2008...you had Marion Bartoli in a slam final..It was better than now but not by that much.

Henin's loss to Bartoli was a huge fluke and we both know it. Next time they played Bartoli didnt even win a game and hit 2 winners. Serena lost to Craybas once at Wimbledon and Venus lost to Sprem. Who cares. How you say in their primes is funny, like we cant expect Henin and Clijsters to be in their primes, but we can except Venus and Serena to somehow be when the sisters are on average 2 years older. Venus and Serena are not in their primes now, and they are far more out of theirs than Henin and Clijsters are. Venus will be 30 next year, she is already sucking on all surfaces except grass which she didnt used to do, and you think she will be closer towards her prime than Henin and Clijsters, LOL! What is your point here exactly.

Serena is threatened by the competition at this point in her career while the other two are not? Serena who has been playing the tour week in and out the past two years won 3 of 8 slams and been to 4 of the slam finals is threatened by this competition but the two players who have been of the tour are not at all threatened by it? Serena is apparently more threatened by Henin than vice versa for a long time now. If Serena wasnt threatened by Henin why hasnt she won a single slam since Wimbledon 2003 that Henin played? It is not like they havent been in the draw together much. You say Henin won those 2 hard court slams because Serena missed them? Ok then why hasnt Serena proven that by winning a slam with Henin in the draw since then. Am I missing something, were her legs chopped off, wouldnt they still be chopped off in this case?! You want to diminish 2 slams Henin won with Serena out when Serena hasnt taken a slam from Henin since then, yet I suppose Serena whose only 5 slam wins since Wimbledon 2003 were with Henin absent (2) or temporarily retired (the 3 since last 2008 ) gets a free pass, LOL! If anyones slam wins should be diminished they are Serena's more than Justine's.

Serena on the other hand hasnt been able to stop Henin from winning slams, when Serena has been in her way since Henin first became a champion and Serena has become half commited (both which began to happen around the same point in mid 2003) Serena has been swatted aside. Since you mock the Bartoli loss how huge a threat is Serena at this point in her career to Henin when she couldnt even do what Bartoli could in 2007, beat Henin in a slam, heck couldnt even beat Henin a couple days before Bartoli beat her in the same event. That is even more telling than the fact Henin lost to Bartoli. While on the other side when Henin is in the draw since that point many years Serena doesnt win, period. The facts are there.

Even when it comes to Kim If Serena isnt threatened by Clijsters why did she let her in only her 3rd tournament back beat her in straight sets at the U.S Open. Why did their last slam meeting before that over 6 years ago at Serena's all time peak Serena need to come back from 5-1 down in the 3rd set vs Clijsters to complete her Serena Slam when Serena was twice as fit, commited, and playing better than she is today.

The field in 03-04 that Henin won 3 out of 4 slams against even with Serena absent was much better than the field Serena has won won 3 out of 5 slams against. Furthermore Henin played to an even higher level in 2006 and 2007, especialy 2007, than 2003-2004. Henin first dominated with only Serena gone some of that time, and by contrast Serena recently was less dominant than Henin's early days of dominance with each of Henin, Clijsters, and Sharapova (essentialy) all gone. So again what is your point.

Lmao where did I say closer to their primes? I just siad how on earth will they magically start winning wimbledon's now when they couldn't do so in their primes. Is that an unreasonable expectation?

Never denied Serena hasn't won a slam but you said the current competition as in the current field. I don't really see how Serena should be threatened by Henin coming back from retirement.

Anyway my whole point is how can everyone be so sure that they are going to easily grab 3 to 4 slams. Hell it is a possibility yet can we be certain that this will happen. I just don't see it likely, Henin was playing pretty bad in 2008 and had lost her drive. I am not ready to crown her a two time slam winner for the next year. I am not denying in 2007 Serena could not stop Henin we all know that. However next year isn't going ot be 2007. You really believe Henin will come back playing in 2007 form?

No wonder this guy was banned; Henin has been a total washout at Wimbledon, with her most telling loss coming at the hands of Bartoli--the latter everyone under the sun mocked for even walking out on court on that memorable day against the allegedly great Henin.

You keep bringing up that match. Do the names Jill Craybas and Carolina Sprem ring a bell. All of a sudden Henin looks great by comparision, atleast she didnt lose to a 30 year old tour journeywomen, and a player who couldnt even stay on the main WTA tour past age 22. Everyone has an off day. Oh let me guess now those were flukes, and Henin's loss to Bartoli wasnt even though she double bageled and allowed her only 2 winners next time they played.

On another note I am surprised to see bluetrain vote for only the FO title for Henin and Clijsters.

Bump. If only you were not banned to see this. It is amazing to see how 22/28 felt that The Belgians would combine for more than 2 slams this year when not to be at all harsh have only managed one slam final and two QF or better appearances between the two..

What do you mean? davey's still here....

Just proves that tennis is anything but predictable.

Lol. I mean lambiel, though I do worry that I have given davey a bit more fuel to the fire, but I kind of just remember everyone trashing anyone back in December who said Serena might win 2 slams again next year and the belgians would might only grab 1 at best..

To me it was easy to see. Henin even before her retirement was no longer a dominant force in early 08, it was wishful thinking more than anything to think someone could come from a year break to go back to winning slams left and right, no matter how weak some though the WTA was. Also Clijsters is only a 2 time slam champ for a reason, it was hard to see her turning into a 2 slam a year type of player. I thought Henin would win RG, but even that didn't happen. Now unless Clijsters repeats at the Open, the Belgians will go 0 for the season at the slams.

Yea the problem with Henin is she is smaller and at an older age she doesn't just have the same technique and speed and she can't rely on power to get through if she had never retired in 08 things might be a bit different but by 08 things were not looking good.

The Belgians have overall been a flop this season. Clijsters has been very good at times but not when it really matters- the slams. Henin has struggled all season really.

I think Kim's chances of winning future slams are much higher than Justine's though. Her game is actually good enough to win slams now, unlike Justine's who doesnt appear to be anymore. However Kim has to get over this mental thing she still seems to have about playing her best in the slams. It would have been interesting how she would have done at the French if she played it. Given how it all played out she might have had a good shot to win it, but she lost in the other 2 slams to people she wasnt supposed to all the same.
