zap -- i agree with you that driving a manual transmission for pure fun is the way to go but plenty o supercars are now sporting not so slush-boxes. godzilla (nissan gtr) comes to mind among others with the f1 style paddle shifters. figure anyone who can drop $80k+ down on a weekend toy car can get whatever they want. unless you take your car to the track often or you race semi-professionally -- chances are good that you are not as proficient with a stick shift as you might want to imagine. it's the same with tennis skillz on these forums. you got any racing experience zap? need for speed or gran turismo on the ps3 doesn't count.

yea i love everything about the GTR except a 16yr old can hop in and drive it around. zero skill needed. its kind of sad what money does seomtimes. yes these cars are track cars. i do play video games at all. and yes i pretend i am tasukigami when i am far from him, but thats the fun for me. fark paddle shifters. i rather mess up on my downshifts and go around nuburing in 30min then have the stupid computer revmatch for me.

I've never seen that poster; I had one of Borg on the wall of my college dorm (now that's showing your age!).
Yes, beautiful Jie is right up there next to brilliant Beethoven...and on the wall of my condo as you come in, you see autographed covers of CHESS LIFE from my chess teacher, who is also one beautiful woman.
Next thing you know, someone's going to post something about Beethoven being a woman in drag...but I have that covered already, too: a poster of The Blue Angel decorates my bathroom, with the beautiful and sultry Marlene Dietrich.
So now you have it: Zheng's house tour...
Oh! I forgot my huge poster of Jack Nicholson as JImmy Hoffa...I was going to put a NY Giants cap on him, but that would be a bit much, wouldn't it?

I was a huge Steffi Graf fan (favorite female tennis player) but I never thought to put any posters of her on my wall... might of been a little weird. I didn't think she was hot, I just liked the way she played. I bet she could come back on tour and beat 95% of the women playing right now.

jrp, thanks for coming out and playing with us yesterday. playing with you as my partner was like being in bed with, like, marat safin: totally out of my league in experience & skill, and was woefully inadequate in comparison to previous partners. but hopefully like marat, you're not too discriminating, and you'll be back? and um, now that i got that first time out of the way, i should be able to enjoy myself much more!

hahahaha that probably has to be the most interesting interpretation of my doubles game... but gracias :D Definitly good time hitting on saturday despite the wind, thne again playing in the hills of new market/fredneck at a place called west winds kind of warrants that!

Proof that this (ans possible next) millenia belongs to the geek!

Also I agree that the only way to enjoy a super car (or any true sports car for that matter) is via manual transmission! Altho in the case of godzilla I will make an exception...

FWIW- most Super Cars have soo much gadgetry anyway, having a manual is like running windows 3.1 on your multi-core machine with dual vid cards..... fact is, a manual in alot of these cars might be holding back the car's performance rather than improving it.

It's really funny watching people say they really want to drive when 99% of the drivers out there probably couldn't make one hot lap around a track without crashing - LOL! I'm prob in the category - but I"m all fast and furious with my SI ;)

Writing to you guys from the Harold Solomon Tennis Institute. Thought I get some ideas. A lot of the stuff they do are the same as the weekly clinics at home. The exception is conditioning drills by a single player (jump rope) as others hit.

The juniors are talented but not wow. Not as fierce as Nb back in the day. Watching Harold give a private. Very calming demeanor and makes his students repeat back instructions. Thankfully I learned that lesson, but awesome to see a famous pro do it.

One bad thing, is between picking up the balls, and sipping water...H man is making personal calls.

Overall, some good drills. Wish I had another teaching pro on court to help out like they do.

The last Thursday consistency clinic with the guys was good. This week its about speed speed speed. So layoff the waffles this week.

yea its true, but its the human element thats fun. sure you are limiting yourself via manual control, but isnt understeering into a turn much more fun instead of having it done for you every time. crashing is part of the
package' too. the SI can be a good track car

I think you may be right about Steffi. I'd like to think so -- I am a big fan of what she and Andre do.
Never seen a poster of her. But, all my life, I have had heroes that I look up to: Bobby Kennedy, JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr., Beethoven, Sinatra, etc. I also have heroes in my hobbies, tennis and chess.
Heroes are not much in style anymore, at least the ones who really stand for something. To some, Michael Jackson is a hero. To me, he's just a overblown pop star.
Heroes are not perfect. Some are quite flawed indeed. But they always serve to make us extend ourselves and do our best at whatever endeavor we are in.

Ran into a real 4.0 in my league. In warm-up I detected a TFM-like smoothness about him. He was solid off of both sides, used a lot of slice and had good touch. (Darn you 4.0 dubs players!!!)

Anyway, lost to a better player tonight 1-6, 3-6 but still had fun. Guy was good and pushed me to play my hardest. I was losing but still was smiling.

Thing was I was taking the intiative and pushing him around and he always just managed to get the ball and slice it back - then I'd do my 3.5 thing and smack it long or push it into the net. He also had a nice 4.0 lob.

Still had fun though and he was a really good guy and a good player!

I was doing some hard running tonight. Think I may have burned off about 30 waffles. I'll be ready for Thursday.

There was a place on the west side of 18th ST in Adams- Morgan when I worked in that neighborhood seven or eight years ago, but I don't know if it's still there. Good food; I ate there a lot. Something with "New Orleans" in the name of the place, like New Orleans Cafe. Great jambalaya and great fried shrimp with remoulade sauce.

Sappy,

When are you going to New Orleans? I was planning on a trip down there early next year. I've been down there a couple times in the past, but the idea of drinking under the warm glow of the hot Louisiana sun again was too tempting. If you are going now and promise to drink with me.. I may be tempted to go down now as well.

P.S. Does the android have any bar skills?

Anyone here a UFC fan? There is a fight this weekend (7th) in the area and I know one of the fighters. He fights the first round.

Frankly, I'm not a fan of UFC too much. So I need a drinking buddy.

UFC fighter was eating ketchup and rice before UFC 104
By Steve Cofield
http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/blog/ca...t=ArNB_mQxd1aWjLk.rJLmkds8R9MF?urn=mma,199656
If anyone needed a huge postfight bonus at UFC 104, it was Pat Barry. The heavyweight out of New Orleans, scored Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night for his victory over Antoni Hardonk. That was good enough for $120,000. Good thing, Barry needed the infusion of cash in the worst way. He confirmed to MMAScrapsRadio that he was completely down on his luck before the fight, agreeing that he had little to eat in Los Angeles the week of the fight.

"I still had my apartment but if something would've happened and the fight had been canceled, I would've been evicted six days later."

Barry, 30, said he didn't even tell his trainer Duke Roufus for fear that he would think the fighter had the wrong motivation going into the fight. Barry said he didn't ask anyone for money including his mother:

"I could ask someone but then at the same time, how hard are you going to work for something if everytime you get in trouble somebody catches you? I did something to put myself in this position I have to work my way out of it."

Barry got his $120,000 bonus check last Tuesday. He couldn't believe it. When he went to deposit the check, his truck wouldn't start. Barry got a jump and hit the bank sporting a black eye and pink striped shorts.

"I go to the bank, I'm sweaty, I've got the black eye, I haven't shaven in two days, I'm strung out because I haven't slept, I have green circles under my eyes so I'm like 'Can I have a deposit slip mam?'. She gives it to me, I fill it out hand it to her. She looks at the deposit slip, then the check, then looks at me and says 'Excuse me I'll be right back.' Then a manager comes out, a guy in a suit and says 'What seems to be the problem?' I was like 'Well I have a black eye, that's the only problem I know this looks really ridiculous.' So he asks me for my ID, I hand him my license an he's like 'Your license says Pat Barry, but this check was written to Patrick Barry.' So I decided to be funny and tell him Pat Barry is in my trunk right now. He didnt laugh. So I told him take your time man do whatever you need to do because I have no where to go and my truck probably wont start when I go outside so you can just do whatever you need to do. An hour later he came back and everything was fine, the check was in my bank account."

That dude got paid like 7 grand flat to fight. then won another 7grand win bonus. Then he won 60 grand for fight of the night and 60 grand for knock out of the night. Not a bad pay day :)

TFM- What's the name/specs of the racket?

Hit today with the TFM's Yonex and they are sweet. Good control plus plenty of pop when you swing out. A little flexy in if you hit high in the hoop, but still good.

It's got me thinking of making the switch from the PDR....

Its a big sportsplex. Not a high school.

Sounds like your pops needs you HW. I would stay home and drink his share of beers. The cruelty of a transplant can only be compounded by the loss of beer consumption. The horror!

Funny - did a search on the TW racket finder and the Prestige pro turned up as something with similar specs. Another racket I like, but IMHO the Prest Pro's play stiffer but they are 63 flex.

I remember you hit pretty well with my Prestige Pros that one day... every one of your backhands was within one inch of the baseline. $160 and you could have two of them, basically brand new, strung at 58 lbs with Maxim Touch... just putting it out there. ;)
