The main reason Fed lost in YEC

His kick serve sucked. He basically was rolling in the 2nd serve and they were all teeing off on it, and he ended up winning only about 35% of his 2nd serve points. Here's an example of when Fed's 2nd serves really clicked:

Also it was really clicking in the 2007 AO and 2009 Cincy vs Murray and Nole. He has to have that serve back, or he's toast in the semis/finals of any event.

This is also the reason he lost in the 2009 Australian Open and US Open Finals. The serve in particular the 1st serve was just not on. Had he served like he should he would be sitting with a Calendar GS right now.

This will be the #1 thing addressed in his Dubai training block. If his serve isn't magnificent in Doha, then it's probably time to push the panic button.

I agree. Fed's serve uses to compensate for his poor baseline play against top opponents. This time, he got hammered whenever he went into a rally with Del Potro or Davydenko. His groundstroke weaknesses get exposed, especially on the backhand.

But I still say his main liability is his weak 1-handed BH. Everything else, like his missed forehands and effect of poor serves, emanates from that.

Federer has been making far more unforced errors on his forehand than his backhand over the past two years or so. One of the biggest problems is that he's not moving his feet to get into position like he used to so he is off balanced more than he used to be. And his forehand has just become a very inconsistent shot, when he can go from hitting winners one minute to hitting the ball 10 feet out the next.

I thought he played a very good 2nd and 3rd sets in all 4 of this matches, and a very poor 1st set in all 4. You cant literally give a way a set in a tournament of all the best players and expect to come back each time. I think that is one reason Federer isnt as big a force in best of 3 events as best of 5 anymore.

No Fed won 15 in the last 6 years.... he's tired from ALL those slams. Plus he's been playing tennis since he was 5, so I'm pretty sure he's exhausted by now. <sarcasm> (for those who don't get it)

Fed is ususally the one ALWAYS has a good 1st set, thats why im suprised he did in his matches here.

True that. If the opponent pulls him wide on the deuce court, Fed always seems late now-a-days, and his response is a lame duck squash/slice shot.

Well, Federer used to know how, as he was 12-0 versus Davydenko. But maybe he's forgotten now.

What are you talking about? :confused: Federer shaked Davydenko's hand at the net and even put his arm around Davydenko and tapped him on the tummy, like a lot of pros do.

Really, was he actually crying? I watched it on SkySports with Robbie Koenig commentating, I missed that.
I saw the Davy handshake, it looked like he barely made eye contact with Davy and was a bit disappointed but no big deal.

You can see the Tears in his eyes. A very emotional person.
Roger needs to work on his Backhand, Serve and Volley sif he going to do any better next year.

I've heard a lot that a big issue for Fed is he doesn't move as well to his right anymore. Well that's mostly true since the mono hit in late 2007. But there are times like in Cincy when the peak movement to the right was back. So he can move great, it just doesn't happen very often. He needs to recharge battery, no?

It was perfunctory like Rhino said - I thought Niko was abit disappointed given that he made sure he didn't do a big celebration in respect to a fallen champion (what would Djok have done in his place...). But Fed made up for it in his post game interview w some gracious remarks. a class apology from a class guy.


and yes. Fed right moves seem slower. even in 05 Safin beat him w BH up the line to the FH. Pete used to leave his FH completely open and dared you to beat his running FH...Fed's wins are due to different factors, notably serve, FH, defence, experience etc but his losses are due to his FH errors.

As to his BH. just look at which side people prefer to attack or approach. its not weak, its just weaker than his FH, meaning he cannot kill from the baseline off that wing in as many situations (off balanced, deep, running) as the other.

also I agree, his second is a liabilty when it used to be unattackable. as a result it reduces his confidence on firsts. key factors.

Daveydanko was a 135mph serving ball machine. Never left the baseline and perfectly clean. No shame for anyone who lost to him, hats off to djokovic for barely beating him.

I don't remember the exact details, but I think he barely shook hands with him. Not in a condescending fashion, but almost as two people who have played each other many times and have nothing to say.

Fed was tired, Del Potro was tired looking, Djokovic was tired even though he's young and had seven days rest before the tournament. Roddick didn't even enter because of injury and although Nadal played he is far from being at his physical best. Davydenko played well but he didn't have to go through or endure the injuries, big losses, breakthroughs and now or never moments the other players faced during the year. He was fresher.
