If you're 5.0 this is the official thread for you to share your wisdom. It can be anything you'd like- a journal of your thoughts on the game, tips, insights, psychology...etc

for myself and others, can you clarify whether this is for fellow 5+ players or for lower players aspiring to improve?

Consistency, depth, a decent amount of pace and variety. Also good court coverage and recognizing opponents patterns

where is the 7.0 thread?

i just can't get a continental grip on my serve...what can i do?

It'll feel awkward for a while, especially if you were hitting your serve with an eastern grip for a long time. The first hundred serves you do might feel weird, but keep it going and eventually you'll start to get the hang of it. Also make sure you don't wait at the waiters position for your trophy position. If you don't know what that is, it's being in your trophy position but your wrist is laid back and racket face is pointing up into the sky. Try to get more of a federer/sampras trophy position, that'll help with learning to use the cont. grip for serves. Best thing to do would have been to start off with the cont grip though.

I'm not a 5.0 but I do have some advice that I think will help.
Use a racket that suits you. And work on footwork. I think those are two great pieces of advice.

How do you get rid of old habits that are detrimental to playing tennis? Such as being too wristy?

There are certain drills and devices that force you to lock your wrist up more.

A couple ways to lock the wrist would be to grip the racket tighter (not too tight). Another way for forehand wrist problems, would be to lock your wrist so that the racket is tip is facing up during your backswing, then get to pat the dog position by releasing the lock on the wrist just a little bit, then swing forward and make sure you hit through the ball and focus on the wrist staying laid back until after contact which is where it releases.

1) Hit hard

If that is not working:

2) Hit harder

If still not working

3) Complain (i.e. If my opponent hit with any pace........ or, you should have seen me in practice yesterday, I was awesome).

This entire thread is moot.

You're asking accomplished players to give advice to each other?

What aspect of the game are you talking about? At this level you have to be very specific.

4) break racquet, revert to option 1.

The primary reason this won't work is that 5.0 players do not take much advice unless it comes from a coach. I don't want to throw water on anyone's parade here but there aren't very many of these players in any one club, even if its big. Club of couple of hundred players "might" have one or two - maybe. I'm not talking of this "self-rated" BS, I'm talking of "real-time/right-now" 5.0 players and above. A lot of teaching pros don't even/can't play in that category so its a small group of talented young players. Kinda the way it is, sorry.
