Nadal quit because...

He was already going to lose. That's the point. Why would he continue to play on his tweaked knee if he was going to lose anyway? To appease some fat neckbeards on a message board?

Murray outplayed him and there's nothing he could do about that last night. The best thing he could have done is spared his knee some abuse and get off the court, and that's exactly what he did.

Thanks for a non-troll thread that says the truth and not many will accept that Nadal reitred to protect himself.

Seriously. I don't understand what people want from Nadal? To further damage his knee in a lost cause, just to entertain people watching?

I agree, even in the first set when was playing his best he couldn't get a handle on Murray.
About time he's using some common sense about his body.

That is why I prefer to watch WTA matches. Men cannot even be bothered to finish a match. They should be paid half of what the women are being paid.

And women cannot be bothered to practice their serves so that I don't have to sit through 15 double faults a match.

They shouldn't even be paid.

You could be right. It just goes to show that the statement Nadal never quits is completely false. When he comes up against someone who is better he knows when to give in.

Nadal is 7-3 against Murray; let's not get ahead of ourselves. Murray played better last night, that doesn't mean that he is a better player.

Hewitt had a winning record against Fed too....in the beginning. Last two HC slams, Murray has owned Nadal. That's not getting ahead of ourselves. That's fact.

I don't really blame the guy. In an interview I saw he basically said there was nothing he can do against Murray so he wanted to spare his knee. I

Knee or no knee, Murray was way better. Nadal was playing at his highest level possible in that first set. He said so himself. And he was owned.

Crying like a little girl during your opponent trophy ceremony, or yelling "come on" after every UE is sportsmanship?

Nadal is actually no different in this regard. After every point he loses no matter how good the play was by the opponent he's upset at himself and winces as if he should win each and every point. That's really disrespecting good shots from the opponent.

This 2010 AO is a similar to the 2009 FO. Nadal played great in the first 3 rounds, look unbeatable, and then get beat by a better player. The only different is he quit this time.

But I though that when he comes up against someone better he just tries too hard until he gets injured:rolleyes:

So because he makes a facial expression when he LOSES a point, he's the same as Murray who yells "come on" like a brat after his opponent makes an UNFORCED ERROR?

Nope, that's actually Nadal saying to himself "I should have done better on that point" whether it was a forehand, serve or backhand by the opponent. That's the only reason he is so good, because he tries on EVERY point.

Then why did Nadal fight so hard to get the break the game before? Do you really think had he managed to break back he'd still retire? Not a chance on earth, not until the next break at least. Nadal was in pain, but in no way he couldn't have continued for 3 more games. That was bad sportsmanship, and its not the first time he's done that.

Federer at the FO 08 final was getting destroyed so badly and in the 3rd he was about to get a tasty bagel, yet he didn't even ask for a medical timeout let alone retire the match. He lost like a man, let Nadal have his fully earned victory, and moved on.

Nadal was a sore loser today, simple as that. You cannot justify retiring in a slam when you only need to play 3 more games, especially after he fought so hard the game before.

It's not just a facial expression, it's the attitude behind it. IT's really no different from Ivanovich fist pumping everything as if it had to do with her skill. Nadal thinks he is perfect and should win every point. That's really in bad taste. Sometimes the opponent's shot is just too good. Didn't you see how Nadal complained to himself when Murray made amazing shots? Take Djokovic now, he at least claps. Nadal only winces.

It is ambition, not ego,he has been taught to go for it all the time. Nadal is nothing if not humble. Look at his presser after the murray match. He always has kind words for his opponents. He was there for his rival in his worst moment even when he stole the limelight a bit in the AO ceremony. He let Novak make fun of him in the Rome ceremony with the butt picking bit.

You can't fake that attitude for several years. He is a nice guy and he doesn't think he is perfect. Far from it. He has always said that there are other players who are more complete than him and that he is trying to improve his game

That's not ambition. Ambition is left at the door when you grow out of your tweens. It's now ego only. Yes he's still young, but it's ego all the same. Nadal ACTS humble in public, yes he can fool people like you. He does think he is perfect on the court, else he would show some kudos when an opponent makes an ungettable shot. If a shot is ungettable, why the hell would he be upset? He is NOT perfect.

The theory that Nadal was a bad loser is blown away by his presser where he says he felt he played well and that Murray played better. Not to mention that he was blown away by delpo in USO and didn't retire even though he had a stomach injury at the time. So why would he retire here? And I'm pretty sure he and murray are in better relations than Rafa and Delpo since they know each other since they are 13 and andy has always looked up to rafa. They already played the "I'll let you bagel me" game in rotterdam and Nadal was pretty scared about this pain cause it was the same as the one that caused his WB withdrawal so he didn't want to take any chances, even playing at low capacity for another three games.

He will have it checked out but from what I've heard he will be a no show in Rotterdam.

All he had to do was serve double faults and not move when Andy served. Would be over in 2min, with a win on the record for Murray. No risk but no glory.

Try and think of Fed/Sampras/Rafter/Edberg in the same situation, you really find it hard to see them retiring at that stage. Put Nadal/Djoker there, and suddenly you can.

Its all about who you are.

Yes but you can see right through him can't you?

Such childish posts. You actually think you can judge a player because he is too ambitious? What about a player who wishes hawkeye to be turned off? Would that say something about federer? Or what about that time he smashed a racket? Does that say something about roger? I think hit for haiti says more things about Roger than those things but then again haters will be haters, even if they try to disguise it.

Ambition is left at the door? Brother,if you don't have ambition you don't have nothing. Sure you need talent, work and luck but ambition is the main ingredient to succeeding in life. How can someone have such a big ego and be such a nice person? When all were crowning him king he was saying to fed that he was gonna break sampras's record(which he did)? When they kept asking about Fed in Spain at the spaniard of the year awards he kept saying that fed is the best he ever played against even though those spaniards would have liked to hear something else? When he lost in RG he said Fed deserves to win it the most? When he lost in AO he said it is Murray's time to win it? He lets Novak make fun of his habits in front of the Rome crowd with a lot of self-irony involved and yet he is such a bad and egotistical person, right?

The way he handles with relationship with Fed,the AO moment, the rome moment, even how he reacted when he got attacked(kissed) by that fan in USO speaks volumes about his character.

He doesn't think he is perfect on court otherwise he wouldn't be saying at press conferences "I played very well but I lost".

Sorry oh great elite, enlighten the unwashed masses.

Nadal is disappointed after he loses a point cause he is human and puts his everything into every point. Now he is more pissed off than before cause he is making more UE's whereas before he rarely did that and he knows that. He is also gesturing more because he is more anxious about his game than before.

Those were not UE's. They appeared that way because of Murray's stellar play. A guy doesn't go from 10 UE a match to that many just automatically. There is usually a catalyst on the other side of the net that is the cause.

Well this does have to do with learning lessons, which many may not comprehend yet. Nadal learned yesterday for the first time. The ego dissolved a little, hence he quit. It was what he had to do.

So that in the long run everyone will remember that Rafa quit the match because of knee injury and not with a result like 6/3 7/6 6/0 against Murray. I don't blame Rafa. I actually see Uncle Toni's long hand in the situation, because it's doesn't seem in Rafa's nature to act reasonably when it comes to such decisions.

A little bit off topic: I also don't understand why tennis fans are so harsh on tennis players. " Wow, how arrogant, how tactless, how classless" etc! Let them be arrogant, let them be themselves, let them be competitors. I cannot recall any other sport in which words are so "impotent" and well-disguised.

Yeah, and? Who here doesn't have a ego? The question is how big is your ego? The nature of man is to be competitive,to be ambitious,to strive to be the best in our field of choice. It's OK to be ambitious but Nadal doesn't have a big ego off court. He knows his place in tennis history,he respects his opponents,he respected Federer when he had him on the ropes etc. If being ambitious on court, fighting for every point is having a big ego,so be it. I wish more players would fight for points like Nadal. The guys in his generation, delpo, murray, djoker learned a lot from his battles with fed and all have gotten faster, stronger and more mentally resiliant, following Rafa's example

Your world view is too black and white. Nadal is no saint(I'm sure he has had his outbursts) but he isn't the egomaniacal ******* you make him out to be. You cannot fake that public attitude 5 years in the spotlight, you go insane.

This would actually have made sense if his "ego" hadn't dissolved against delpo three times(one being the worst GS defeat in Nadal's career-why didn't he retire then?),djoker three times, davydenko three times, soderling,am I forgetting someone? Damn Nadal's ego must really be something to dissolve only "a little" after so many beatings.

Murray was absolutely fantastic, it topped his performance against Nadal in the semi's of the US Open in my opinion.

There's no shame in losing that match from Nadal's point of view. It is a bit sad to see all the headlines being "Murray wins as Nadal retires" etc... That's not really a reflection of what happened in the match and looking back at the score in a few years time people will think Murray only won because Nadal had an injury, which is a shame.

Having said that, if he was in real pain then he probably did the best thing for himself, which you can't really argue with.

That's why he stayed one whole set in rotterdam with murray after getting injured in the second set there. He already played "gimme the bagel while I wait" with Murray. And he actually gets along with muzza, they know each other since they were 13. He didn't want to rob him of the win and murray couldn't care less once he will win his first GS.

It's simple really. When Nadal can run without major pain,he plays through no matter how severe the beating. Nadal messed up his knee on a dropshot in the end of the second and didn't want to risk anything since his old injury flared up again.

At the near end of the match, I saw Nadal keep on looking up at Toni, as if he was waiting for him for signal to quit. They communicate well using sign language of their own.
