USTA Leagues: Are women more commited to the team?

We have a mxd team and the guys are just not showing up for practice and cancelling their match confirmations days before the match while the ladies are showing up every practice.

Most guys are in their 30s/ and 40s. The laides are moslty 40 and 50 +

do you have the same situation in ur teams?

It's the opposite on my 8.0 team. Guys are always wanting to play and the ladies are cancelling practice, etc. Our matches are on Friday nights, so may have something to do with schedules and kids, etc.

I find men's doubles more fun and interesting to play than mixed doubles. In mixed doubles my partner gets isolated and even as active as I am trying to get into the point, I don't get many chances all the time. It becomes rather frustrating.

In men's doubles the pace is higher and I get a chance to hit a lot more shots rather than being a spectator constantly trying to get into a point. If I had a choice of playing mixed or men's doubles I would choose men's doubles.

In our group the guys are more dedicated to getting out to play, but when it comes to scheduling makeup matches the women outclass the guys by such a large margin as to be comical. Interestingly the guys on our team whine about playing in lousy weather more than the girls do. Guys attend practice far more but thats because they basically just come to practice so they can go out for beer afterward.

What level of mixed are you playing?

I found that going from 7.0 mixed to 8.0 mixed was a world of difference - no keep away and everyone one on the court could hit. Before I got bumped, I was a 3.5 playing with a 4.5 woman. I was a challenge being the weaker player in the court.

As for women being more commited.... I don't know. Seems like everyone on our team is commited.

It's probably because the men have wives at home that have something else for them to do.

I run a men's team and that's just the way it is...

I still blame the men though.

What happens a lot is some men are responsible and they are able to tell their wives that they have made plans (or they check with them ahead of time).

And some men are just very sheepish and lazy and they let their wives plan their entire schedule for them. So rather then keep their plans for you, it's a lot easier for them just to cancel because they would hate to have too make a decision on their own....

Pretty much when they say they are going to do something you learn that it really means "if they dont come across something else.....". Once I know that I pretty much just put them on the bottom of my list when it comes to counting on someone.

Women on the other hand can just tell their husbands they are playing. (and they have no problem Im sure doing so.....)

On top of that there seem to be a lot more women playing league tennis then men. A lot of them have a lot more time on their hands so they have a lot more time to dedicate to the sport.

I will definitely show-up for the match. Have you read a book named "Men from Mars Women from Venus"? It might help explain why "Men" and "Women" behave differently. Best, Tina

I have found that it is more team to team that varies in commitment level, rather than a specific gender. Some teams have been together a long time and tend to be very responsible players (as well as friends). And then some teams are a bit rag tag where people don't know each other as well...and in turn, people tend to flake out a lot more, too.

My own experience in mixed is that the women show up for practice, take instruction, and learn positioning. The guys are much less likely to do these things.

I'm not sure if I hold this opinion because I'm a man or some other reason, but I play league tennis solely for fun and social reasons. A practice on instruction/positioning sounds more like a chore to me, so I probably wouldn't show up for that either.

I agree. Where I live, the problem is there is probably a 5:1 male/female ration, so complete WTT leagues are tough.

Maybe this is a married/Single thing. For our team because we go out for drinks after practice the guys are DEDICATED about showing up to practice where the girls are far more iffy about it.

LOL. that only works if the girls are somewhat good looking. not in my case. talk about cellulite ditches and rivers of veins, giant bums....

My three main criteria when I recruit for my mixed doubles team are:

1) They are committed
2) They kick ass
3) They MUST be able to drink after we play, whether is be practice or match. As a matter of fact, the women on my team probably outdrink the men everytime

I would have to agree that women are generally more committed than men in leagues. The mixed team I played on the men generally got roped into being there by their wives etc. and didn't really want to do it.

However the mens team that I was on last season and will be the same again this year we all have to commit to practice twice a week. Must play one tournament per month and must not be unavailable for more than 1 match out of 9 during the season. If you can't commit to that and stay with it then you will not be welcome on the team and will not get played.

Haha! If you don't mind flying into Colorado to play on Sundays you're in :)

I actually already drive 30 minutes further than I have to because I think that team is a lot more fun to be around than the closer teams; they do have beer after the matches too!

This sounds unreasonable to me. Are you talking about tournaments that are completely unrelated to the league? I mean tournaments are a pain because often times you have to leave an entire weekend open because you don't know what your match schedule will be. Thats why I play maybe one tournament a year.

Yeah, I couldn't live with that restriction, and I don't even have a day job.

I would think you'd miss out on a lot of good players with such rules.

Oh that's too bad! And quite far from where I am! What level do you play?

3.5. Taking a 'break' from mixed this year, though, since I'm also going back to school in addition to working full time. Trying to focus on getting ready for singles for the spring USTA season.

That is probably why so many tournaments have such small draws. It is a big time commitment and some tournies cost quite a bit!

I am in if there is any chance LOL!

See, Jennie suddenly has many volunteers! LOL Sounds like a fun team!

Ah I see.. That's great that you're getting prepared for singles! I'm going to play more singles this year as well.

Haha we do have a lot of fun as a team. I can't wait till leagues start!

I played my first 'singles' spot last year, and prefer singles, but still have a *lot* to learn!

And I would like to officially welcome you to TW, it is nice to have another gal around here!!!

Ha- funny this thread is up here right now. We have 2 mixed teams and tonight we have a combined practice. Its one of the girls birthday's so there will definitely be going out afterward. We reserved 6 courts thinking that would be plenty but at this point we have 26 people who have RSVP'd so we have 2 extra and can't get another court. To answer the question from the thread we have 13 girls and 13 guys who are showing up.

I hope Jennie can handle it when the entire TT forum moves to CO to play on her teams.

LOL! Wouldn't that just be fun?!

You're in Denver? That's awesome to meet a fellow Denverite on here! What level do you play?

I have a 3.0 female relative in Denver who would love to play mixed. Shout out if you need her.

Thanks for the referral Cindy! I'm looking for players to fill my 8.0 mixed team so it might be out of her league :) I'll be sure to let you know if any of my friends need players for their 7.0 teams!

Can I spare...? I might be driving through in the summer during my holidays...

We can always use a spare! What level do you play?
