Improve your tennis strength with this? (saw it on Tennis channel)

Worthless. Go through a full workout of cardio and strength and flexibility training. There are no short cuts. Improving strokes? Geez how did Sampras and Federer ever succeed without it.

Seriously, that shaking nonsense has been around since those slimming belt machines in the 1960s. Totally worthless. My guess is you have something to do with the website such as multilevel marketing?

I was hoping it would improve her strokes.

While I don't buy all the claims made for this product, I'm willing to bet that it is not totally worthless and does promote muscle development. I don't see why this cannot be used as an adjunct to other muscle development exercises. Hard to say tho' if you would get enough from just this product alone. Go ahead and buy it ($20 is not really all that much), but encourage the wife to do other development exercises as well.

No it isn't "hard to say if you would get enough from just this product alone". A few centuries of research have been done. Muscle only develop with increasing loads. The product is totally worthless. Take the $20 and use it to blow your nose with, that would at least save a tissue. Well perhaps it would be a nice door stop, which is what it would end up after 2 days.

I actually got my wife the P90x video set to augment her running and tennis.

She had intermittently exercised with workout videos before, and started with the P90x cardiovascular workout. Watching on the big screen TV, I think she feels like she is part of the group. So far, so good.

She has never had interest in lifting any weights, except for her way-to-light dumbells for the "thrower's 10." She does use resistance bands.

I'm hoping she'll do some more body weight, dumbell and pullup work that's on other discs in this set. We'll see.

I mentioned all this because it may be a way to better fitness without spending a fortune.

Sorry, I'm not buying yoiur argument on this. I stand by what I said. I a bit wary of those who speak in absolutes and use phrases like "totally worthless". When I saw/heard all the claims for this product, I was pretty skeptical but believed that it had some merit.

I checked out quite a few reviews for this product and particularly sought out the most critical ones. I came across several that were highly critical of the way this product was presented. However, as critical as these reviews were of the marketing and claims they all conceded that the product itself had some measure of merit in stimulating muscle development. None concluded that the product was totally worthless.

For older people (like 80), young children, non-exercisers and perhaps small females, I'd think it would have some benefit. Remember, something IS better than nothing. :) However, it isn't working any major muscle groups, and it's benefit is primarily arm toning (is that a benefit?), with perhaps some slight attendant caloric burn. For $20 it should sell to it's intended target group-people who don't know any better.

There is certainly nothing worthless about stroke improvement, but I'm not sure where the value is in this product. I'm a firm believer in learning by doing.

Well, for an untrained person just about anything will work for a little while. I remember a few years ago I did 20 lb dumbbell curls for 100 reps or so with half the range of motion and my arms grew a little. I think the point TCFLA is making is that after your body adapts to the very small workload that the shake-weight offers, it becomes utterly worthless because there's no way to increase the weight.

These infomercials always say things like "Just 5 minutes a day, 3 times a week", as if you can just go through the motions without adding weight/reps and still progress. And then they have untrained people talking about how they can "feel the definition already" to prove it. Pretty sad if you ask me.

Not to mention the fact that good old fashioned lessons will do more for her strokes at this point than any weight training will.

I think I might get fired for viewing that site.

My wife was telling me about this thing..she could barely keep from laughing just trying to explain it to me.

There is a funny dubbed clip of the advert on youtube. Type in 'shake weight parody'. I couldn't stop laughing. (Don't want to post the link, cause it might be too rude for the youngster's)

I think the OP was joking about this product right? I mean, you can't be serious... ...just look at the videos... ...can't stop laughing.

Google "Shake Weight Spoof", there are quite a few video take-offs of the ad. I had one emailed to me awhile back that was pretty funny...but can't find it right now.

I bought one of these because I had a bunch of clients asking me about it and I wanted to be able to give them an intelligent answer.

Do I think it will give a man the upper body development their models depict? No, absolutely not.

Do I think it's "totally worthless"? No. Where I think it has some merit with respect to tennis is for scapular stabilization and strengthening of the rotator cuff muscles. There are certain positions you can put your arm in when you hold the weight where you're able to generate a stabilization demand on the rotators of the humerus. I think the oscillation effect combined with relatively low weight held in a stable position gives this device some potential for shoulder maintenance.

the ads are a riot and yes, can easily be viewed from a salacious point of view. Would I recommend this device in general? No. But if you have one I do think you can get value out of it in terms of helping your tennis game.

personal note: when I got this thing, I was about 9 months out from relatively serious rotator cuff surgery. Tore about a third of the subscap tendon off the humerus. Range of motion was about 80% of normal and even though I went through intensive physical therapy, strength still wasn't all the way back. After experimenting with this device, I noticed a definite and quick improvement in shoulder function. It allowed me to get after some small, deep muscles that are somewhat hard to access otherwise.

take it fwiw.

Hi yemenmocha,
Your links didn't worked for me. I know things like this happens on entire web but if you will check the link again or share some article it would be kind of you.

The OP is nearly 2 years old ;)
