2010 Slumps

Gees,

Fed, Nadal, Murray Djokovic all in slumps at the same time what a bummer. I can relate with that I stay in a slump.

I really dont think Nadal is slumping like the others. He is in good form 4 clay. He is getting into Semi and Quarters. He will most likely start winning titles now on clay with this good form. The others are not even coming close.

True, but he's also not beating top 10 players other than mental clown Tsonga. Once the top players start applying consistent attacking pressure on him, he folds. He'll prolly win the FO, but I don't think he'll completely dominate the clay season again.. too many players know they can beat him, even on clay.

True, if he can get to the semis on a hardcourt tourney he will likely do better on clay and grass.

What players know they can beat him on clay?

U all think he will get favorable draws in the clay tournies?
I think he will win the French too. But your right there are more players out there who will not freeze up against him now so I can see more 3, 4 and 5 setters. Gonna be a fun clay season for sure. Like to see some big hitters winding it up!

Federer and Soderling, obviously. And Djokovic has gotten extremely close to doing it in the past. Davydenko has a leading H2H with Nadal (although not on clay), but I'm not sure if he'll even be ready for clay. Delpony has crushed Nadal in their last two meetings, and he has a bigger and more consistent game than Soderling.. with as many semis and quarters that he made on clay last year, Del Potro has proven he can more than handle the surface.

I don't think guys are afraid of him any more.

Are you kidding. Everyone is afraid of Rafa on clay.

Afraid? Not really afraid anymore. More like they respect him and what he can do on clay. But they dont seem to be stiffening up like a greek statue anymore when they face him and it gets tight. I have seen him win clay matches like 6-1, 6-2 and the opponent froze up like an iceberg. They could have at least made it closer if they fought. Not doing that as much the top guns.

1 match dude did you forget about the other thousand matches he has one on clay or are you going to just think about 1 effing match?

Yep, I should probably refer to matches Nadal played in 2005, 2006 etc. instead of a MORE RECENT ONE which was HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT in terms of tennis history. Look, I already said, I think Nadal will be the victor in Paris, but to sustain the kind of dominance on clay that he has done in the past is just asking for your knees to break down.

You started a thread but now your blasting peoples answers. Are you looking for just one specific answer that you like and want? Nadal will do well on the clay ok?

Nadal is 2-12 in his last fourteen meetings with opponents in the top ten. These kind of troubles have a tendency to bleed into areas where you think it should affect players the least (clay & Nadal, for example).

del potro from all the big guys though is in the biggest need of waking from the slump, french could be the stairway to heaven, but he needs to enter healthy

Yeah sorry the guy wouldn't let up so I had to slam dunk him.

LOL, still haven't responded to ANYTHING RELEVANT TO THIS TOPIC. The following is a summery of what has so far transpired:

You: Nadal is UNBEATABLE ON CLAY.
Me: Well no, he has been beaten in the past and is vulnerable right now and looks like others aren't afraid, but he's still favorite for the french.
You: WELL THEY SHOULD BE AFRAID, HE'S WON LIKE A THOUSAND MATCHES ON CLAY SO STFU.
Me: Uh what?
You: KEVIN ANDERSON EFFING SUCKS!!!1!!1!one!1!¡!1¡

If you you're obsessed with how much Kevin Anderson sucks, start a thread about it. It's pretty bad when you're trolling your own thread. Idiot.

I wonder if any of these guys that are slumping are just so sick of playing that they couldn't possibly be winning. I realize its their livelihood but do they loathe it secretely?

Now that he is ranked 3rd, he will definitely get a better draw. The higher the seed, the better the draw. He just better hope that Sod isn't in his half. Sod now has the confidence to beat him on clay, to go along with the game. Many players have the skill to beat Nadal, but very few have the confidence to carry it out.

:) People on TT have (extraordinarily) short term memories.

Maybe so, there are so many tournaments. Sometimes you are wasted while posting, sometimes your wife is screeching in your ear, and sometimes recalling facts seems damn near impossible.

Can you relate?

This guy seems to think he has a chance for some reason.

Is Federer in a slump ? If so, I'm sure everyone wished they were in a similar predicament. After all, he did win the Australian Open.

Right now only Rafa,Djoker and Murray are in a slump. Federer is just chillin the best way he knows,by not giving his all in non-GS tourneys and cleaning up when GS come so to me he isn't slumping.

I'm really baffled by this 'Soderling is Nadal's nemesis' mumbo jumbo. Do you guys really think Rafa is sitting in a corner somewhere rocking back and forth and whimpering at the mere mention of Soderling's name? It's ludicrous how many people trot out this nonsense.

EVERYONE has a chance against the top guys and there WILL be upsets and streaks will be ended. That's not just tennis, that's life. Sod's victory was a big deal but please put it into context. He is far, far from being a metaphorical achilles' heel for Nadal.

Federholics can't accept that he was lucky always.
That's why they cried forever after Canas beat him week after week,
without any matchplay in 2 years.

To beat Nadal you need to believe in yourself, actually beating Nadal. The mental game is bigger than the tennis itself, and therefor Sod may be one of the few, unique players on tour that actually see themselves beating Rafa on clay.

I'd like to put him in the top 4 at beating Rafa on clay, along with Roggah, Djoker and Del Potro (due to the fact that he is good on clay, and that he has a similar gamestyle to Sod).

I will attempt to explain why he and players with the same style are an achilles heal to Nadal.

You need some basic understanding of the technical aspects of the game to grasp this, tennis is about matchups, just as Nadal's style is a bad match up for Federer. The players who hit flat strokes and take away Nadal's time to setup to hit heavy topspin strokes are the bad matchups for Nadal.

These players would include: Soderling,Davydenko,Del Potro, Cilic, Aggressive Murray,Blake, Berdych,Nalbandian.
all can hit flat and take the ball early, as a result Nadal's forehand can be attacked by these players. His best weapon becomes a liabilty.

Soderling's high forehand is the best on tour, anything bouncing shoulder high he absolutely clobbers, this puts a lot of pressure on Nadal, to keep the ball deep against him, any short ball he hits Soderling steps into the court and hits a winner.
Nadal's basic strategy to hit topspin to the opponents backhand doesn't bother
Soderling and other tall players with 2 handed backhands at all. On top of that he has a 140mph serve. Finally we have Soderling's demeanor he is not in the least bit intimidated by Nadal's displays on court and will not allow Nadal to get his way so easily.

Nadal, like a coward, decided to take some shots at Soderling using the media. Soderling has been a man about it, stating if Nadal had a problem with him he should have came to him personally instead of talking to the press. Soderling has said some good things about Nadal recently, but I can tell you for certain there is no player on tour he loves to beat more than Nadal.
When they play it is personal.
