Del Potro wrist surgery

How exactly did he hurt his wrist so badly? Is it from his service? or the big ts fh?

I am wondering if this could happen to a pro we should be careful on what to watch out for. They got great insurance to cover the surgery and I don't!

it seems to me that he arms the ball rather than using his body for power, that's just my take

stiff racquet, poly strings, extreme grip..

If you mean by extreme grip you mean eastern/weak semi-western, than yes, you would be right. His grip doesn't have anything to do with his injury, more or less his technique and just overall physicality.

question I will be interested is.. what sorts of strokes will hurt wrist?
some say that its his hard hitting style.. but isn't Davy also diagnosed with a wrist injury?

How unusual is wrist surgery considered among pro players?

(ps. can you fill in the back story because the details of this news are unclear.)

Do you really think he is an arm-swinger? Seriously? Or are you just joking?

i do believe it, after watching the WTF against Davydenko it's clearly noticeable that he doesn't use nearly as much body as other pros. so many open stance forehands

just in the first games alone he missed 2 easy short court forehands but just swinging with his arm

Unfortunately, not that uncommon. Connors, Agassi and Rafter all had wrist surgery. Becker had a severe wrist injury around 1997, but I think he didn't have to go under the knife. Too bad about Del Potro, he is pretty young to already be having such severe injuries. Does not bode well for his longevity in the sport.

I am surprise with the extreme top spin Rafa is using he is NOT the one needing wrist surgeries. I tried hitting hitting high bouncing balls (head level) with a reserve fh style stock and within 2 hrs my wrist was hurting.

In looking up Del Potro's string logs, he typically string ALU power around 61-63 lbs., on his wilson racquets. That alone seems a recipe for tendonitis.

Anyone think he will make an equipement change when he returns?

In contrast, Nadal strings consistently around 55 lbs with his Babolats and Bab polys.

Considering del Potro hits a flatter ball than Nadal, I think this just goes to show you that it's not just one of the following that lead people to tendonitis type injuries but a combination of all three:
a) technique
b) equipment
c) physical makeup (i.e. some people are just naturally built to be more or less susceptible to overuse injuries).

Here's to hoping Del Potro heals up 100%

He lays his wrist back like all pros.. The difference is, he hits harder, with a locked wrist, flatter with a locked wrist, than anyone else in the world with his fh. Even Gulbis does not hit this shot as fast. The hamate bone cannot take that kind of smashing punishment. It's a small L shaped bone at the bottom base of your wrist. The severe take back and snap into the fully locked hitting structure is the way the ball moves so fast.

Cañas, for example, had 5. FIVE.

I will not be surprised if Nadal develops wrist problems in 2-3 years.

I am surprised to hear that Connors had wrist surgery. Seems like he hit with a firm wrist.

but he also did it for a very long time. i think he was around 38 when he had it.
