I've been playing with multi in the crosses for a while (and poly in the mains).
After reading on thi forums and trying to save some money I tried OG Sheep micro in the crosses.
Very disappointing. I will cut the stringbed today and go back to my usual setup.
I prefer even a cheap multi (like FXP).
No more syn gut in my crosses.
Agreed.
After all the hype here about PSGD I put it into my crosses back when I used Big Ace mains and it sucked compared to any Multi in the crosses. Feel became crappy, and there was less control. Power was about the same though.
Axctually I much prefer having my multi in the mains with the poly in the crosses. I strung up two frames with the only difference of switching the hybrid configuration... they I liked both, I liked having the multi in the mains much more.
I would recommend you consider Maxim Touch (the original version, not the new one). What multi do you like?
I am trying to find a decent multi cross below $10.

That was the next in my list. I got a set last week and was ready to string tonight.I'm happy with Tecnifibre Multifeel crosses at $9.50 per set.
Might be tough to find the old at this point. Take a look at this thread though:I know only one place that sell it (the depot), but how do I know if it's the new or the old?
thank you mate.^^^ No worries mate. Hope you find a good cross to use. Cheers.
Maxim Touch, Multifeel, Wilson Sensation are pretty good options (in that order)... on the not as popular side, Solinco and Mantis multis get very good reviews.
Most likely you have more feel, but my concern is control.
Actually both... I have never been short on power with my tennis game, so everything about my equipment is all about control. I use a low powered frame... currently a Tour 90 strung at 64 lbs... with a hybrid as I said of MT and Poly. Using the relatively high string tensions keep the ball from trampolining off my racket. My previous frames were a PS 6.0 85 strung at 72 lbs.
I am sure you are aware the main characteristics of a string job come from what is in your mains.... and the MT works out great with the stiffness of the poly in the crosses.
I'm going to be odd and say......after trying NXT and Wilson extreame synthetic with polyon mains (all strung at 60) I like the synthetic better. I felt like I had plenty more control. More topspin which allowed me to hit harder. I liked multi better at net though.
IMO, multi crosses give better feel, comfort and playability than synthetic gut too, but good synthetics such as Babolat N.VY works as well as any multis.
it def felt softer and that caused touch shots to be better. But I just pefer the synth better. Then again, that's just me. Everyone is different
Hi, I been stringing my 001 mid at 56 54 with original big banger . the original big banger strings are stiff and would seem like it would be no power because the fram is stiff but with lower string tension it feels pretty comfortable. Now i see you went the other way , where you have high tension (60) but used softer strings . Can you tell me if you know the difference of how your set up plays vs my set up ? I was thinking of setting it up like you have it . Plus i put lead on 3 and 9 oclock and it made off center shots allot better . if you put lead on it where do you pout yours at and how did it change the racquet ? Thanks for your time..
I feel with the softer string the ball seems to fly more. I do like vollies and touch shots. But groundstrokes, just too much. Although, my serves were toasty today. Very hard accurate, and had a lot of "kick" even though it was a flat serve.
With the same polyon main, but with synthetic cross, I liked it more. I felt like I could hit harder, felt like I could rip the cover off, and it would stay in. I felt like I was getting way more topspin and the ball never really sailed long. Bad side is that touch shots and vollies are not as good. As for serves, can't really comment as I've been working on a new serve style, and I havnt used it for the new serve.
I am going to hopefully try mantis strings and some Kevlar hybrids. For now I might try upping the multi to its max, not sure what that is. Or trying a crisper multi. It is growing on me.
Hope I helped
Thanks allot man . I think me and you are on the same journey with this kevlar thing . I just am afraid that our racquets (001 mid) might be the wrong kind to do the kevlar set up. (stiff) ?? I don't know but we will find out soon lol... I might get the volkl PB mid 10 and do the kevlar set up cause i think that racquet is flexible but I would have to sell my 001 mid and I am scared to sale it !!! lol
yeah i have had some scares, like oh is this not the right one for me. but then i think about why i like it. i have tried many popular frames and the mid oo1 just is my stick.
to the kevlar, different people say different things about it about being arm friendly. i want to try it because a lot of people are saying about how much spin it causes, like it bites into the ball. i am trying to be more of an aggressive high topspin baseline player. over the summer i am thinking about trying forten ultra thin blend and ashway kevlar. the mantis strings and spiky shark. i have heard some good things about the power poly and comfort synthetic from the mantis.
i will try to keep you updated about it.
\btw whats play style?
My playing style your asking ?? If so I love to camp at the baseline because I have to be honest with myself I love hitting just a little bit more than winning lol .. seriously though But I can be an all court player to.
my stringer told me that multis are generally harder on the arm than synthetic gut (i chose syn gut over poly because poly hurts my arm).
Was he mistaken?
are you my twin by any chance? i do make approach shots and come up but i mostly stay at the baseline as an aggresive baseliner.
LOL ,, I think it's our racquet that is molding us to that playing style .. I am working out getting stronger so that my yonex feels more light and i can get a little more swing out of my racquet. Plus summer is coming and I need to look decent for the females at the beach lol...
right now it doesnt feel heavy, to me. im going to add some weight throughout the racket to get a heavier swingweight but really headlight to see if it gives me anymore power and spin at all maybe 13 oz SW 345 and 12pts headlight. then with the right strings and strokes, NCAA coaches will be callin my door
I wish you the best man, go for your goals and allways enjoy yourself at the same time. Well balance soul you dig Also you dont have any problem with hitting a forehand that is chest level or higher due to a hard hitting top spin player that is hitting medium pace groundies ?
I really can't hit groundies with it. The multi strung racquet is either giving way to much power, or not enough TS. Same stoke, but the ball is flying. Its a shame because volleys and serves are really nice with this hybrid.
I've been working on hitting eastern with over the shoulder and I've been liking the results. I'm going to a little camp, so I'm going to work on it there and maybe use it for my normal swing. So I'm going to where you were haha.
On a sidenote. I've ordered gamma ultra thin and some Wilson hyperlast spin.
So I'll keep you up to date if you are still interested in the Kevlar.
