Federer must make the switch or he will descend even more

Just imagine what he could do with one of Weed's 135 inchers!

Exactly! It's not his racquet.

I'd bet people who start these threads are people who can't handle a 90 sq. in. racquet themselves so they think the best player who ever lived must also not be able to handle it. Think about how dumb that sounds.

correction, BP............ they can't handle any racquet.

look i know youve heard enough of a federer racquet switch already but this time its serious. federer falling to number 3 is catastrophic at the least. federers game has really taken a hit because of a lack of power. what he needs to do to make up for it is to go to a wide beamed 95-98 frame. federer should do some testing with wilson and look at the BLX Pro Open. A 96 inch frame would work well for federer at this point in his career.

He racket needs to be longer too, may be like 54 inches long, because he is old and slow now. Also strings with GPS guidance so he can hit the corners. Anything else?

Fed needs a 250" racquet with a 12x14 string pattern and full Luxilon Beton 1.48 gauge strings to win another slam.

I don't think a new racket would be the 'silver bullet', I mean he was number one and at the top of his game, he could't go up, I think he just need to rest a bit.

Fed should switch to a tweener. :)

Head size isn't his problem; inside his head, his age and a certain Mallorcan are his problems.

Fed could play with a broom handle and still win more times than not.

:) But those Asian BLX's are VERY difficult to find. :) BHBH

Call me impatient, but I've been waiting on that reference. I was immediate with shipping/posting your reference and would appreciate it (in return) if you could take a breather from posting on TTW and drop me a simple note.

Hi AC,

I posted your reference earlier today. :) I DO appreciate your getting the frame out quickly and posting a nice note for me.

Best,

Some professionals never make it to a Major 1/4 final in their entire careers.
Fed loses a couple of times in the quarters, and behold, the end of the world is upon us.
He's not moving quite as well as before, and his motivation/intensity seems to be lacking somewhat.
Also, he doesn't convert opportunities (break points) as well as he was doing before.
2 or 3 important points that one doesn't win in a match can be costly (i.e. make the difference between winning and losing).

Well over the years as world number one and winning all these slams we all know Fed has been using the same racket, if fact hes played some of the best tennis every witnessed with this 90 square inch racket. So can someone please tell me one thing? Has everyone else suddenly gotten so much better so Feds best isnt good enough anymore, and therefore he desperately needs to change frames? Ooooor could it be that there are other aspects of his game where hes declined......??

False. He needs to work on fitness. If he did that earlier, he would've beaten Nadal at the French Open in 2006 and 2007 as well as beating him in Rome in 2006.

Agreed, this clown might actually win a few slams if he went to a bigger frame. I don't know why no one has ever suggested this.

Notice how he hasn't won anymore slams using his small 90 sq head? Almost stuborn the way Pete Sampras was, until 2002...

Federer already played his last grand slam final in 2009/2010, so if he enjoys playing tennis, keep his current setup...if he wants to compete and "hang" withthe stronger younger players, who are more hungirer than Roger is at 30/31, than move up to a 98 or 100 sq. otherwise ti will be QF and SF the rest of your career..

Whether or not you think that Fed should change to a larger headed stick, it is a FACT that his shank count is miles higher than Nadal or Djokovic. That's due to the headsize.

I don't have the stats to back this up.

But just from pure observation I agree with this^^

Spoken like someone who's never put a 90 on top of a 100 racquet and seen the difference. If you shank with one, you'll shank with the other. He's shanking because of his timing on rushed or super fast paced shots where he's trying to crank out more racquet head speed to do something with it.

Why will this not click in anyone's head!?!?!?

Put a 100 racquet on top of a 90 and then put a ball on the string bed of the 100 where the ball would hit the frame of the 90 to cause a shank. What do you see?!?!?! That's right, the ball touches the frame on the 100 as well. What does that tell you?!?!?! That's right, shank with both racquets will be caused.

While I don't necessarily agree that Federer needs to switch, my vote is that it couldn't hurt. What does he have to lose at this point?

Also, this observation might be incorrect, but does anyone else in the Top 100 use as small of a head size as Federer? If there are others, then surely they can be counted on one hand. My understanding is that his head size might even be smaller than 90 sq. inches, and if so he certainly boasts the smallest or ties for the smallest head size. Make of that what you will, but I think that's pretty telling. As someone who has played around with different frames, there is no question that timing the ball is easier with a larger frame. Give me an AeroPro Drive and I can play like a madman from the baseline, but give me a Six.One 90 and it's a different story. Larges frames are like playing with a handicap.

You mean 2011 at the French Open after he'd wiped the court with Djokovic for most of the semifinal - using the same frame he's using now??

He can't change frames every time they decide to make the conditions super slow. He adjusts his string set up for the clay court season already.

Um....didn't Sampras win that Slam in 2002 with an 85 sq. in. racquet?

How many 30/31 year-olds even make it to the QF and SF of Slams with bigger racquets?

And you know this because you've seen Federer play with a bigger racquet for 5 years and you've compared his shank stats with 5 years of him using his 90, right?

How about it's due to his footwork and his racquet head speed?

OP, listen to yourself, Federer just lost to a guy in the semi finals of a slam. A guy who is the currently Wimbledon, uso and ao champion.

Fed is not having a terrible season and he hits the ball as hard as anyone. Bigger racket will do jack sh*t unless Fed decides to change his precision game to baseline grinder game which will not suite him because he is not 25!

Which is EXACTLY why he needs to move to a bigger racquet - not enough pop or forgiveness to his exsiting stick so he's slashing at the ball.

You don't see Djoko and Nadal have 20-25 shanks during a match.

90sq" sticks will be musuem piece in 5 years time.

I'll chime in and say that I think it can't hurt the man, I feel he probably has lost some zip in his forehand of late and it isn't his technique.

He's also stringing at around 45-50lbs so could perhaps find the same control in a larger head by raising the tension slightly; In any case it would be intriguing to see what effect a switch would do.

Who dares wins Roger!
