Strings A Stringer Must Have In Stock?

What are the strings you always have in stock? I usually just have 2. What are your go to strings to suggest to your customers? and How much do you charge for your labor and string? THANK YOU i was just curious.

Strings I always have in stock

Prince Synthetic w Duraflex 16g

Technifiber Black Code 16g

Syn Gut, NXT, Topspin Cyber Flash and pro hurricane...I have others, but these are my top 4...all 16s... I do most of my stringing for local high school teams, so string cost + 10

At the moment (Just did an order from Solinco here in AUS) I am carrying reels of Pro Supex Maxim Touch, Solinco Pro Stacked, Tour Bite and Barb Wire and Forten Comp Nylon. I also have sets of various strings.

In the past I've carried reels of Topspin Cyberblue and Tecnifiber Syn gut but the customers who used these have moved onto other strings.

If I were a stringer, I'd stock these for sure:

Liberty 16 – for the cheapskates
Dynamite 16 (really a 15L) – for durability with softness
Dynamite 17 – This is what I'd suggest to the majority of players

From there, I'd very likely have these:

Dynamite 17 or 18 Soft – This is what I'd suggest for people with tender elbows.
MonoGut 17 – for the poly people
NRG-2 16 – for players who like a fairly stiff and durable string

Gut would be a special order, or a "bring your own pack", and would be an extra charge.

I would suggest any new stringer keep a full reel of half decent syn.gut (eg Prince Duraflex, RAB Texflex, HEad PPS), a full reel of resonable poly (eg Weiss Silver, Signum PPP, MSV) and a half reel of a multi (eg RAB Sensorfibre, Tec NRG etc).

That should sort you out for most regular club players, if anyone want's anything specific you can order an individual set.

Pricewise, set you labour charge and your mark-up on string (if you want). I charge a little more for labour than some of my competitors but that's because I do a better job! I mark up my string based on the 'set' price. That is if I cut from a reel i'll charge the cost per individual set to the client - that's my mark up sorted. You could just charge cost price if you want, it all depends on what your market is and what people are willing to pay.

I did read it, I just misunderstood it with the respect to the way it was worded.

Just ordered suggests something you don't currently have on hand...

I am carrying implies that it's physically in your possession...

I took it as you ordered yet another type of Solinco string in addition to what you currently had in stock, but I'm with ya now. ;-)

Hehe gotcha - love Tour Bite, son uses Revolution, but I've yet to try Barb Wire.

Anyway, the strings that seem to get the most demand in my area are:

Mantis Power Synthetic
Gosen OG-Sheep Micro
Mantis Comfort Synthetic (has a very comfortable feel...but probably pretty stiff lol)
Babolat Syn Gut (got two customers who swear by this stuff...but hey, I stock what people buy, not what "I" like)

Pro Supex Maxim Touch

Weiscannon Silver String
Topspin Cyber Blue
Kirschbaum Pro Line II
Solinco Tour Bite

I also have reels of:
Genesis Spin X
Pro Supex Big Ace,
Poly Star Energy
Gosen Polylon (a mistake, but a few high schoolers like it)
Mantis Comfort Poly

Like Ash Smith, I don't mark-up the string per se; I use the price of a set which serves as my bonus (of sorts) since I only charge $10 for labor regardless of string type.

Off topic I know, but how would you compare the Mantis Comfort Synthetic with the Maxim Touch in terms of softness. No stiffness rating discussion, just feel :O?

Hey mikeler, I know you're a big proponent of MT, and I know why; it's great stuff! I don't know if I can discuss this without throwing some numbers out though lol.

Seriously, I have MT in one of my racquets and Gosen in the other (was curious about the relative difference between the two in terms of feel/comfort/playability), but from what I remember when I had one strung up with Comfort is that it's every bit as soft as MT...maybe a little softer. It's really a nice string. It's certainly not durable by any means, but if you're not a string breaker or you string for yourself, it's a great string to consider. It's pretty popular around here since there are quite a few retired "elder statesmen" that play tennis at the base.

I keep reels of these: NRG2 16G, Signum Pro Tornado 17G, Signum Pro Hyperion 17G, and miscellaneous individual sets of things I want to sample such as Black Code, and Spiky Shark. I need a decent syn gut reel and may get Prince 16G duraflex of something similar. I had been using an old syn gut reel I had but just used the last bit. I charge $10 over the string cost.

Ash, I am always looking for an alternative to Prince Synthetic Gut with Duraflex, but keep going back to it as my SG (along with Prince SG Original) for its quality, playability (crisp, durable, reasonable tension maintenance). How do RAB Texflex and Head PPS compare to the Prince SG w/D in these characteristics? Would a club player be able to distinguish either from the Prince in a blind test?

For others - have you found a synthetic gut that is a clone of the Prince SG w/ Duraflex?

Thanks

Out of curiosity.... what gages of each reel do you stock? If you currently stock multiple gages and were only to stock a single gage which gage would you stock?

rich, for the synthetics I stock both 16 and 17 gauge. For the poly strings, I typically stock 17, although I will at times carry sets of the 16. For instance, I carry Super Smash Honey in 16 because that is what my wife plays with. I'll stock some BHT 16 because most people prefer or request that gauge.

If I had a choice to only stock one gauge, it would be the 17. Typically it is much livelier, and not as abrasive.

RAB Texflex I doubt they'd be able to tell any difference, if anything I prefer it and generally get through reels and reels of the stuff - the price I get it for makes it about £30 cheaper per reel than PSG, which helps! Head PPS is more similar to (on a par with) Tecnifibre Syn Gut that PSG, it's a solid core synthetic which has a pearlescent coacing for easier stringing.

Go for the Texflex if you can get it! You or your customers wont regret it!

I'm surprised to see Pro Supex here--well, maybe not as much from the poster from Australia. I use Premier Ace on and off, but if I ever needed to find it "around" instead of ordering it myself and stringing, it would seem impossible. Even so, I personally (and again, not a pro stringer) know of only one place to get it.

Yeah, I like Forten...that is, if you're referring to Forten Sweet. It's not to shabby in a full bed with it's soft, cushioned feel. I also like it as a cross. I need to pick up a reel of that sometime in the near future.

no1 under high school age should be stringing for any1. why would any high school kid want a elementary/middle school child to string his racquet for him?

I guess that is why I'm a "New User" and you're a "Semi-Pro." I found it in a roundabout way--not this board. Does anyone carry Tourna Big Hitter or Blue? I once thought they were "the" same string as Premier Ace for reasons I won't bother you with. I feel they play the same and found they have extremely similar numbers on the RSI string selector chart. However, Premier Ace is cheaper. I usually go with that.

(1) Hehe um, no. I'm a novice stringer, but I try to stay in touch with what's going on in this section of the TW Forum.

(2) Yep, Tennis Warehouse does. ;)

It's interesting that you liken Premier Ace to BHB. I've never played with Premier, but I have hit with BHB, and the general consensus around here is that BHB and Topspin Cyber Blue are the same string...and I agree since I've also hit with Cyber Blue. I'll add Premier Ace to my list of "strings to sample", however - just to see what it's like.

Well, I've never hit with it, but I string it for quite a few customers, and thus far EVERYONE loves it, so I say give it a go - see whatcha think.

Might want to re-read his post, tennisnoob3. He simply asked about stringing for high school kids and very young kids.

That's kind of a tough one because some of the HS kids here are pretty darn good, and they use strings like Prince Recoil (I stock it special for one kid) Pro Hurricane, and the like. Then there are those (mostly JV) where all they need is a basic synthetic like Gosen OG-Sheep Micro and they're good to go. The same is true for the younger kids. I've used Prince lightning in a few racquets for really young kids because of the variety of colors, but definitely stick with a very inexpensive string - otherwise it's pretty much a waste of money.

Sorry, Copey. I should have said "stock" in regard to stringer inventory instead of "carry," when speaking of Tourna strings above. I guess I should be in another thread now because I'm coming up with all kinds of questions I didn't expect.

Now what kind of a statement is that??

I started stringing in 1968 and I was only 13 years old at the time.
Back then i strung a good # of racquets, as no one in my area was stringing at that time, and I was taught by an old timer that strung for a very long time, and knew his stuff.
It is not the age that matters, its doing the job properly, and being conscientious of what you are doing, and doing it to the best of your ability.
There are some stringers out there at various ages, that just don't follow protocols, and take inappropriate short cuts to get the job done. Its not the age of the stringer that matters, its how well the job is accomplished.
I rather have a young stringer to string my racquet that did the right job, than an older one that takes the easy way out.

That's not true. Every situation is different. I am a Junior right now in HS and I'm taking my MRT test the 2nd or 3rd weekend of October. I've been stringing since I was 11 years old and I am much better than a lot of shops in town here and I have been for awhile. I strung for one in 8th grade and my summer between 7th and 8th grade I made like $600 charging $8 per racquet independently.

I string for my team(high school) and everyone only wants polys(I'm not sure why..)
So the ONLY reel i have is Topspin Cyber Red
Also looking into a reel of syn gut...probably will be Pro Supex Syn Gut Spiral Flex.

I charge 10 dollars, strings provided by me. 5 Dollars if you provide your own string

I'd suggest charging a 'fair' rate to 'customers' and go freebie for the folks who can't afford to pay(if that's what you are trying to accomplish by charging so little) for your labor. If you are performing a quality service, you should certainly get more than $5 for your labor, IMO. Just a thought.

I'm on the team, stringing for the team, against 3 other stringers. lol we all have about the same price as each other...10 dollars for a stringing(we provide the strings(polys)) and 5 for the stringings where you provide them...Honestly, money isn't THAT big of an issue...we already make more than we spend on getting the machine+strings etc. I consider stringing a hobby..and I get money off it. PLUS I save money stringing for myself and get to try out different strings more often.:)

Still, not worth the effort for 5 bucks. You are undervaluing yourself. People would consider 12 bucks cheap, they charge at least 20 plus strings at a club. You are charging 10 with a poly, but most polys cost close to 10 or more.

^^^ Maybe he's just looking to cover costs? I do agree though, over here there's been a flurry of £5/10 restrings advertised on the bay and c-list and the like. School kids making pocket money mostly. Sadly it does the business no favours as those doing a high quality service or taking training to get better have to devalue their services to compete.

I find ALU Rough more popular than ALU but have both. I also carry Solinco Tour Bite and some Pros Pro polices like Black out and their hybrid reels.

If you’re just starting out though and you buy reels of RPM, ALU, 4G, Sensation, NXT etc... count on blowing your budget reel Buick (pun intended.) you will pay more buying sets usually but it cost less initially.
