Smartphone as a Mobile Hotspot and Home Internet Connection

Does anyone use their Smartphone as a Mobile Hotspot / Home Internet Connection?

Do you use it at home for your primary Internet connection?

Which phone and carrier do you use?

Do you like/recommend it?

I'd like to buy a Smartphone with 4G, tether it and also use it as my home Internet connection.

TMobile is one of the few carriers that doesn't mind or charge for tethering.

Its so simple, a troll could do it.

Not many ordinary people are aware of the beauty of TMO/BB tethering. You essentially have your own Internet hotspot for free 24/7 anywhere and everywhere.

With Blackberry, you simply open Desktop Manager while connected via the USB cable and click mobile internet in the tools menu. I may have the name wrong, its 7am and I'm laying in bed (behaiving myself).

Download speed is about 50kb, not bad but not ideal for heavy torrent users. I cannot abandon TimeWarner but its nice to know its there and so simple to do.

I'd like to buy a Smartphone with 4G, tether it and also use it as my home Internet connection. Has anyone done that?

Will they then restrict the transfers to 5 gigs of info seeing the 4G network is capable of much higher bandwidth versus 3G?

Tethering is NOT meant to replace an always on Broadband connection as you lose voice on your smartphone and other services while you are tethered.

Like I said in my first post you will NOT achieve high DL speeds with tethering. You will not achieve DL speed above 100kb ever while your typical broadband connection is around 200kb these days on the east coast. DSL a lot more obviously where you can get up to 1.5mb+ DL.

Sprint and other carriers will bill you out of thy **** for tethering data, hence why it is NOT meant to replace broadband.

Tethering is good for temporary access and not an always on home Internet connection.

But you aren't listening to anything I'm typing so farewell thread.

If you posted in a clear manner without the constant sarcasm and silly pics, I'd probably be more inclined to listen.

I think it is a useful temporary option and when travelling, but have not found it reliable enough to be a primary internet connection.

I think his first post contained no sarcasm or pics and answered a good deal.

Its not a replacement for home braodband though. Just a nice thing to have if youre on the road.

T-Mobile does charge for tethering, however so I gave little weight to the rest of his post. Also, according to others the speed is about 500+ kbps, not 50.

Examples of those using tethered 3G connection on their computers:

Um, if that were the case I'd be thethering all day.

My tests showed very bad DL speeds.

When I ran the Speedtest.net tests I consistently got 50kb.

I'll try again tonight.

As long as you have a BB data plan, there is no charge for tethering. If there was I would have seen my bill skyrocket by now as I use it all the time on the road since its so damn easy. Data is data.

Based on feedback from many people tethering... some can only achieve very poor speeds while others can achieve much higher speeds. Therefore, it may be a setting or some limitation the carrier is placing on individual accounts.

The only people I know that replace their Broadband/always on cable accounts are people that cannot afford the $40 a month.

Using a tethered cell phone as your Home internet connection is a bad idea for many reasons.

1. Hassle of cables

2. You cannot use voice while its tethered (blackberries anyway - not sure about androids)

3. Its not always on, you to have to manually connect

4. If you are a smart person and connect to your home PC from remote locations like I do, you will not have a consistent static IP address.

5. 100 other reasons

So, if you truly cannot afford $40-$50 a month for a cable/dsl connection by all means jump right into tethering.

It works great for me but I'd rather not use it as a replacement for Cable/DSL. The thought has crossed my mind but I need my voice services 24/7, I cannot tether and be without an incoming line.
