Mikeler's Multis

String Movement +++++ +++

Does 5+ mean alot of string movement, or very little string movement?

To conclude thus far, would it be fair to say that based on your experiences, Mantis is good in every way except on spin (which isn't surprising, given the gauge and its comfort levels) and Hexy Fibre very good for spin and pretty good in the other areas.

Begs the obvious question: Hexy in the mains, Mantis in the crosses? Did your Mantis/RIP hybrid experiment work?

Mantis moves more than any other multi I've tried. Hexy is about average movement. Your conclusion is pretty good. Nothing is as soft as Mantis though. Hexy is probably almost as soft as Intellitour. My experiment with RIP in the mains and Mantis in the crosses did not go well. The weaknesses of each string showed up without the strengths in that setup.

Putting together my birthday wish list of strings. Can anybody tell me the difference between NXT and NXT Tour?

It is 16 gauge. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll go back in an add that to the review. Keep in mind, I have not broken the string yet. I've only got about 4 hours on it but there are no signs of notching or fraying.

Mantis / Hexy
Power + ++
Spin (for a multi) +++ +++++
String Movement +++++ +++
Holding Tension +++++ +++++
Durability + ++++

reads like Hexy could be a sleeper...

NXT Tour is a bit stiffer than NXT. I didn't like NXT Tour as it felt harsh on the arm. NXT is a decent string but nothing spectacular about it, probably an above average string but not in the top 3 on my list.

OK, then I'll try out the regular NXT. Thanks for the insight.

while the nxt is soft i found it somehow mushy, not at all the feeling you get from the comfort synthetic of mantis. the nxt tour is slightly stiffer due to some core filaments but held way better tension than the regular nxt and overall provided more feel. it is crisp but i like to say that the mantis is like velvet and has a very specific elasticity (or name it however you like) that i find fantastic.
personally i liked the nxt tour over the regular nxt as it provided a constant response until it broke, while the regular "left" me after some two hours of hitting.

Hmm, now I'm in a quandry. Probably best to stick with the softer string for my elbow.

When I tested NXT and NXT Tour, I was using a KPS 88 which has a stiffness index of 67 so your mileage may vary depending on your current racquet setup.

Since the KPS 88 was on a stiffer side, the NXT Tour string was just a little too stiff for me.

I'm using the Babolat PSTs at 62. My elbow feels near perfect, but when it gets really cold I can feel the faintest hint of the GE even when I have not played for a few days.

Took the Mantis out of the bag today. I don't want to keep using the same racket out of the 3 I own. I'd prefer to split the usage between them. Played a big lefty server and got 5 breaks of serve. The return of serve with the Mantis cannot be beat. Back to the Hexy on Friday. I may use the Mantis against another big server on Sunday. It will probably break and then I can put MultiFeel in that racket.

good point made by parasailing - i used the nxt and nxt tour, as well as the mantis in a nblade 106 which has a stiffnessrating of some 57, if my memory serves me right. therefore it is very possible that in this combination and a rather low stringing tension (i usually string around 23kg mains / 22 kg crosses!), the nxt tour felt much better than the nxt. i can very well imagine the nxt being better in a stiffer frame, but i doubt that the "velvety" feeling of the comfort syn can be achieved by the nxt. the only string that comes very very close in my setups was the new isospeed professional 1.20 (but that comes in at double the price of the mantis).

Mikeler, have you tried Isospeed Professional classic? I read somewhere that it's closed to LaserFibre SuperNaturalGut Pro.

I'm a little leery of trying the Isospeed Brand again. The Isospeed Control was not great for me. Somebody mentioned earlier to try the Classic version, so I may eventually give that one a go.

The Classic versions (Control and Professional), feel and play somewhat like the TEST STRING IMO. Very muted, lower power and not much spin production. Give it a try if you can get your hands on a set for a decent price (like for free).

Hey Mikeler....I am interested in the Hexy. Do u think it would make a good cross with NRG2 Mains? or would it saw into the NRG due to it's shape?
I normally use multi mains and a copoly in the crosses to add a little spin and make stringing easier (hate soft mushy crosses due to blocked holes). thanks

I think it probably would knife into another string like a multi or synthetic gut. It might do OK with a copoly. As I mentioned earlier, just moving the strings with your fingers kind of hurts so I do think it might hurt the durability of the other string. How do you like the NRG2? That is on my birthday wish list.

BTW, the string stiffness ratings are included in the latest edition of the RSI magazine. They show Wilson Shock Shield as 180. I was thinking that string might be lower. Saw some offerings from Genesis and Goldenset in the 190s. I was disappointed that Solinco was not included.

I love NRG2 as a mains string, but I like soft feeling, springy multi's. I would probably use full multi setups if it wasn't such a pain to string the crosses :)
NRG2 is soooo easy to string on the mains...the stretch is consistent and it goes fast. I don't get much more spin with poly's anyway, so I might as well protect my arm.

Springy? I'll have to string that one a little higher when I get around to it.

Broke the Hexy today after 5 sets of play. It breaks just like the Mantis Comfort. It looks just fine and then all of a sudden the outer coating is gone and just a few strands are holding the string together. You have another game or so and then that is all she wrote. This new string is a very close 2nd place to Mantis in my book. A guy watching my match on another court remarked that one of my forehand's today was so heavy that it might have knocked the racket out of his hand. This string is definitely a spinner/winner. Too bad it has Mantis like durability.

Next up is Technifibre MultiFeel 16.

Well had a chance to play so me with Mantis/RIP Tour (56lbs) and also Dunlop Comfort Syn Gut (full job at 56lbs)--about 1.5hrs on both setups. The Dunlop string was very comfy and little string movement--however spin production was not all that great--especially compared to the Mantis/RIP setup. It had very good low pwrd control, but it just produced too flat of a ball. I know I shoudlnt expect much spin from a full multi--however--both the Mantis/RIP and std Intellitour had noticeable more control/spin than this Dunlop string.

I am still trying to find a replacement for my tough gut/poly setup without the highcost/tension loss in the cross. The Mantis/RIP is close--but am missing a bit of the "pop" I had in the gut/setup. And trying gut/multi or even RIP just does not work for some reason!! May give NRG/RIP a try. For me RIP is a nice poly replacement cross as it is pretty spinny/low pwred--we'll see as the search continues. Great thread and tons of info in here!!:)

Hmm, I may pass on the Dunlop then. Thanks for the review KCraig.

It felt nice and comfy--but definately no WOW factor at all--there was really nothing it excelled in--decent all around cheap string. Could be a nice cross for those using poly mains. 7/10 overall rating for me:neutral:

OK, here is my review in the TW format of the Tecnifibre MultiFeel 16. Footnote, I bought this string about a year after I originally wrote this playtest and it seemed much stiffer. I only tried it out as a cross but I don't remember the string feeling that stiff.

It is a little more difficult to string than other multis because of the slight roughness of the string. Bounced a few balls off it and the feel is muted.

Tension it is strung: 60 pounds on a lockout machine full bed
Your regular string set up: Mantis Comfort Synthetic 60 pounds full bed
String pattern of your racquet: 16 x 20
Power (or lack there of): Low/Medium powered multi
Feel: Great feel
Tension maintenance: Seemed to hold the entire 4 hours as a full job until breakage. My B5E/MultiFeel hybrid which I used for almost 8 hours seemed to lose tension over time. I did not get that experience with B5E/MCS, so I'm guessing MultiFeel loses some tension over time.
Price: $9.50/set
Overall comments and feedback: See below

General: I could tell on the first few hits that I was going to like this. The rough texture provides pretty good spin for a multi. This is the first string I've used where if I hit the sweet spot I got a ton of CONTROLLED power. The ball would go right where I wanted it to. I played very well with this string.

Serve/Return of Serve: First serve was absolutely terrific. My flat serve down the tee on the deuce side had pinpoint control. I was able to hit some wicked twist 2nd serves with it too. When I went for my returns this string shined. On the other hand, when I tried to chip returns I did not feel like I could place the ball all that well.

Strokes: Lots of spin on both wings. Depth control was good. This string is almost tied with RIP/Hexy for spin potential. When I wanted to blast forehands, I felt like I could without having to worry about the trampoline effect.

Volleys: It's very good for volleys just like RIP. Volleys feel very solid unless I'm stretched out.

Touch shots: I won a lot of points with well placed droppers today.

Softness: The string feels like a medium stiffness multi. I did not feel my elbow one time. The stiffness in the 190 area had me a little worried before I started using the string.

Tension: Perfect for my game.

Durability: The string looks like a standard 16g string. No signs of notching whatsoever, but I hit a ball at the top of the stringbed at the 4 hour mark and blew out two strings.

Movement: String movement is average for a multi meaning it moves a decent amount.

Conclusion: This is an excellent string that is kind of in that tweener price range between the value multis and the premiums. I think I like it slightly better than the Mantis, so if price or durability were not issues, this would be my new string. I'm a little surprised this string does not get more Kudos on the message boards. It fit my game like a glove.

I love NRG 16. IMHO it is one of the top multi strings out there.
I can't be more in agreement with your findings.

Good review mikeler! A little surprised it did not last you that long, but def an affordable multi in the Technifibre family. I will be taking by a stick to string up full NRG2 at my std winter tension of 56# on a Bab Star5--which is probably equivilant or pretty close to your 60# lockout. Will hit with it and report on Tuesday.:)

Thanks for the Multifeel review. It's my favorite, but I just can't avoid trying other strings, just because they're there. I find that I haven't ever broken a Multifeel setup. But then I've never broken any string since I started playing in 1985 (intermittently).

You have me really jonesin' to try the Mantis.

Didn't see those at the local store. I'll have to put together a string order online for them. Thanks for the info as always. I do believe you said the MF would only last me 5 hours max a while back and you nailed that!

I added this to the Hexy Fiber review:

One last remark, a few people who play with hexy polys complain that after a few hours, the string gets shaved down to a smooth surface. So I examined the cross section of the broken string bed and I could still see the hexagonal shape even in the highest area of wear.

I added this to the MulitFeel review:

When I went for my returns this string shined. On the other hand, when I tried to chip returns I did not feel like I could place the ball all that well.

I strung up the DuraMix last night. It did have lots of coil memory, but still it was one of the easiest strings I've every worked with except for 1 kink. The string feels like a very solid synthetic gut and is easy to get into the grommet holes. That one kink presented a small challenge after I weaved a cross, it kinked on the outside of the racket. I could not pull the cross back out with pliers for fear of damaging the stringbed to uncoil it, so I grabbed the kink itself with the pliers to pull it out. I did some minor damage to the string, fortunately that area was inside the grommet after I pulled tension, so I don't think I'll get premature breakage because of it. This is the first time I've seen ghosting in awhile, the last few strings have not shown it.

One of my Mantis Comfort sticks is going to bust any game now, so I'll probably try Head FXP Control next.

Since my original string that got me into soft multis was Pro Supex Maxim Touch 17, I figured I should add it here as another review. So here is my review in the TW format of the Pro Supex Maxim Touch 17. This is the only 17 gauge multi I've tested to date in this thread.

It is very easy to string because of the softness. It does have mild roughness but nothing that makes the crosses hard to do.

Tension it is strung: 60 pounds on a lockout machine full bed
Your regular string set up: Mantis Comfort Synthetic 60 pounds full bed
String pattern of your racquet: 16 x 20
Power (or lack there of): Medium/High powered multi
Feel: Great feel
Tension maintenance: Seemed to hold the entire 8-12 hours
Overall comments and feedback: See below

General: This was my first post Golfer's Elbow string. It was nice and soft especially at a lower tension of 55 pounds which I started out at. I got beat like a red headed step child getting adapted to my new racket and strings the first few months, but after that I started getting close to my normal level. The mildly rough texture provided adequate spin for a multi. Eventually I upped the tension to 60 pounds. I had one stint in the summer where I served really well with the string but overall it just had too much power for my liking.

Serve/Return of Serve: First serve was good some days and bad other days. I never felt like my 2nd serve caused much damage. I never felt comfortable ripping returns with this string, I always felt like I had to chip it to get control.

Strokes: My forehand could never really get dialed in with this string. I felt like any shot the trampoline effect could rear it's ugly head. Slice was just OK on the backhand. My topspin backhand is solid with just about any string, so no issues there.

Volleys: It's OK for volleys, nothing outstanding.

Touch shots: Drop shots and touch volleys were pretty good with this string. Considering it is called Maxim Touch it better be!

Softness: The string was the softest I'd ever used at the time. I've since tried Mantis Comfort Synthetic 16 which is softer than this. So now this would be the #2 softest string. I know, this does not jive with RSI stiffness ratings but this is what it felt like to me.

Tension: Maybe one day I'll try this string again at 62 or 63 pounds to see if I can tone down the power.

Durability: The string looks like a standard 17g string. The string did not notch too badly. It would typically snap between the 8 to 12 hour mark with no warning.

Movement: String movement is average for a multi meaning it moves a decent amount.

Conclusion: This is an average multi that is good for the price. I just felt like it was too powerful for my liking. Still, I used it for 9 months and have to thank it for helping me stay on the court the entire time during that stint. For those players who have trouble generating power and desire a very soft string, this is definitely worth a try.
