Nadal- "The music on my iPod sounds the same in first class as in economy class"

Apparently he said something like this. Anyone know when?
I think it's a classy quote, especially since a few years ago he could barely speak English.

It was in an interview today when the commentator asked him about the difference between him and Roger and why he's much less "flashy". Rafa said he didn't think of himself as an important person and that he travels economy class often.

The interviewer did not ask why he is less flashy than Roger. Don't make things up.

Make things up indeed!! It was not in an interview today. The quote appears in the Sports Illustrated article about Nadal that hit the newsstands days ago.

More like Nadal showing his true arrogance, purposely riding economy class and showing off his ipod to peons who can't afford it. Disgusting attitude but nothing you wouldn't expect from the man.

This.
He was asked about it in the studio today though. About the quote. He replied saying that in long distance flights he travels business, cuz of his knees, and he needs to make sure he's well rested. But flights around europe and any short flights he goes economy. Also that off court he is not a special person. I think he said famous  But he said NOTHING about Fed being flashy.

I thought he flew by private jet? If he doesn't, he's crazy. Then flying economy instead of first class when you're world famous is just stupid. It really is. Imagine the hassles he must get from fans and also security issues. And when you have an entire entourage that's tagging along it just makes more sense to fly private.

Well at least he said in his interview today that he flies business class on International flights! If he flew economy on those flights I would have to question his sanity! :)

Spoken like Federer.

Fishing on a yacht makes so much more sense too, right?

Yes I think I would be dead lazy and want to fly private. Nadal used to just take the train from Paris to London to compete in the Stella Artois tournament after the Paris open and much to the delight of his fans would sign autographs. I think its lovely . He is obvioulsy a people person and knows the value of his fans. After all its not just about winning and getting the big bucks, its about getting people to watch and fill those seats!

Yes, long distance international. The man should at least be comfortable on these flights and not strapped into a sardine can! The truth is I am sure he could automatically get bumped up to business class every time because of his fame if he wanted to.

Flying economy is not at all dangerous for Rafa. Most people in the world don't follow tennis and most of those people who have heard of him and are on that flight, won't be autograph hungry fanatics like you see on practice courts.

Plus, Rafa really is a people person. Remember the kissing accident in USO 2009? Most players would have turned away, ran, called security or whatever. Nadal's reaction was to tell security that the guy was harmless though he overstepped his boundaries.

Just because someone flies private does not mean they hate people and don't respect their fans. Oprah flies a private plane (an awesome custom Global Express, not some run of the mill Gulfstream in case you're wondering). Does this mean she's not a people person and doesn't know the value of her fans? No. It means she's a smart person who recognizes the value of her time and understands that comfort, security and privacy are not always measurable monetarily.

Granted Nadal is not in the same wealth sphere as Oprah. But he should at least fly Netjets like Roger does. Rafa supposedly has one of the largest entourages on tour (so much for being down to earth, huh?), so wouldn't it make sense to fly private instead of buying and arranging all those tickets? He can meet his fans at the events. He doesn't need to meet them in a cramped flying box.

less flashy eh? lulz. The guy walks around with a 425,000 dollar watch, hires private jets for himself, shows up in music videos, and starting february you will be able to see posters of him wearing nothing but tidy whites.

Im not saying Nadal is a snob, but he definitely isn't the modest and average working class man that some people hilariously think he is.

He is entitled to be flashy, IMO. They guy has millions.

Rafa's Tourbillion watch tells the same time on coach and first class as well.

LOL at all the rich snob/man of the people comments.

Have people actually listened to what Nadal is saying? In those SHORT flights he mainly listens to music so what would be the difference between economy and first class in those short trips? None at all.

It doesn't reflect his overall lifestyle, the dude has a mansion, aston martin, harley davidson etc. Rafa is a very rich guy but who, at the same time, is very good with normal people, in a regular setting.

He travelled in business class to go to AO but that was a long one! It wasn't first class though, just business.
Rafa doesn't care about glamour, he is an authentic lovable easy-going and unpretentious guy. How refreshing!

It is just as easy to be lovable, easygoing and unpretentious in the more comfortable business class!

His unpretentiousness is so, what's the word I'm looking for, pretentious. Like J Lo sang after making her making her millions and wanting to rekindle her "street" cred, "I'm just Jenny from the old block..."; If you say so my dear!

Unpretentious, unaffected and uncomplicated. Yes my dear, that's Rafa for you and he hasn't changed despite all the hype.

Yeah, the manufactured humility and dishonesty haven't changed.

It's incredible how Nadal manages to keep the act off court after 10 seasons or so on tour.:)

This whole economy class bit came from the Wertheim article:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1180700/1/index.htm

"Last summer Chris Fowler, the ESPN announcer, broadcast the Cincinnati ATP tournament and flew back to New York City in first class. As he gathered his suitcases at LaGuardia, he spotted Nadal. "Hey, Rafa, I didn't realize you were on the flight," Fowler said. Then he realized that Nadal had been sitting in the back of the plane.

This was no fluke. Fresh from winning the Tokyo ATP event last October—and surpassing $9 million in prize money for 2010—Nadal surprised other passengers on Air China's 3½-hour flight to Shanghai by settling into seat 29C. "I listen to my music," Nadal says of his in-flight habits. "It sounds the same as it does in [first class]."

once again, what a tactless comment from the nadal... almost insulting for poor people that can't even afford to buy all these i-crap stuff... or have to swim from tokyo to shanghai.

sad and disgusting, but well... we're used to that.

Don't let me interrupting your hating but who the hell SWIMS from Tokio to Shanghai?

Distance is 1767 kilometers or 1098 miles or 954 nautical miles.

I would rephrase it to he doesn't need glamor.

Obviously he doesn't goes out seeking glamor, but he's not going to say no to a $425,000 dollar watch now is he?

I think the truly humble way of getting from Tokyo to Shanghai is on a run down fishing boat with illegals. I'm sure they would think that flying (IN THE SKY!) is far too stuck up.

Who gives a sh*t whether Nadal flies commercial or private? Do they ask other players about their flying habits?

He travels with his EXTENDED family and so I have heard he doesn't pay his coach uncle Tony. Rafa is just the same as he was when he started off. That is what is so appealing about him

Nope. He would have to SWIM with them on his back(while they were listening to music on his ipod) to be genuinely humble.

Tony is rich. Why would he need Rafa's money.

And yes, Rafa is mostly the same guy as when he started off. Wouldn't be surprised if he has NO connection to the tennis world after he retires.

Anway, the thread has gone down hill. Nadal did not take economy to make himself look poor or humble but because it was convenient for short trips.

I personally don't see what's so wrong with travelling business or first class anyway. It doesn't make anyone any more modest or any less modest. My dad travels business all the time, it doesn't make my dad pretentious. Even if Rafa had said "I travel business class on short trips, and first class on long trips" I actually wouldn't think he was arrogant or whatever, so what if he prefers a more comfortable journey? Sometimes players have people in their entourage who book the tickets, so what if it's up to them and the player just goes a long with it?

Touche.

In my defense though, vive le beau jeau has such hate for Nadal that I can't tell when him/her is being serious or not. :)

misbehavior of physical and mental existence. most annoying player. sucks nadal.
