MADRID (AP)—Top-ranked Rafael Nadal will need 10 days to recover from a leg muscle injury sustained during his quarterfinal loss at the Australian Open.

A statement released Tuesday says a scan revealed Nadal tore a muscle in his right leg during last week’s straight-sets defeat to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer.

The loss ended Nadal’s hopes of holding all four Grand Slam titles at once.

Nadal is recovering on his home island of Mallorca. He is expected to be available for Spain’s Davis Cup match against Belgium in March and Masters events at Indian Wells in California and Miami.

OC=We are worried about Rafa, he's one of our best sportsman in history and we need to know how his physical shape is after being eliminated by David Ferrer, with evident signs of problems. Toni Nadal, good night.

TN= Hi, how are you? Good night.

OC= Well, I think Rafa has done all kinds of tests and it has been confirmed that he has a hamstring tear.

TN= Yes, right after the match he had an ecography done, we knew it was better to wait for some days to do more tests and he did another one when he arrived to Manacor in Mallorca, on Saturday it was confirmed what he had, 2 cms thats all.

OC= Thats all, now to recover...I dont know but maybe this injury is worse for the scoccer players than for a tennis one, normally they have to be out 3 weeks.

TN= 2 weeks more or less, next week he has to have more tests done before starting his recovery, to see how it is going, so 2 weeks of not doing anything and afterwards to begin to practice. The First tournament that he will play is the Davis Cup.

OC= Rafa was so convinced what he had during the match-

TN= Yes, he knew it for sure, in the 2nd game of the match.

OC= Why didnt he retire?

TN= Last year he had to retire with a serious knee problem and he couldnt play because of the pain, I told him last year to retire and this time it wasnt necessary. 15.000 people bought the tickets, the only thing that was going to happen was that he was going to lose.

OC= You have to have a lot of guts to continue playing, a tear of 2 cm does hurt...

TN= Yes.

OC= He decided in every moment, no?

TN= Yes, we knew what was going on, we had it very clear what it was and much more after what happened last year.

OC= Did he have any problems in Abu Dhabi?

TN = No, everything has happened caused by the flu he caught in Doha. Maybe it was his mistake to play the doubles final, the Doctor from Barcelona told him to not play, the defenses go down and your body is weaker, it was the final with his friend who he plays always doubles there, Marc, and he wanted to try to win it again.

OC= For 15.000 people, for his friend, he does not think in himself, he is not selfish at all.

TN= In Australia's case, the next tournament is the Davis Cup and there is one month until then, until the 1st match, in Doha it was different.

OC=The calendar does not need to be changed, no?

TN= It stays the same, except if next week the results of the tests say something else, but the normal thing is that all goes as expected.

OC= Only that his wonderful shape in which he started the season may be affected with this break no?

TN= Yes, its a shame, In Abu Dhabi vs Berdych and Federer he played at a very high level, in Australia he was more tired than usual, when I arrived there, during his practices he was very tired but when it seemed that everything was ok, he played a good match vs Cilic, a dangerous player, and afterwards he could not continue in his next match and this is a shame, but these things happen in sports and it doesnt matter at all.

OC=We are more relieved after talking to you, thank you, please give a big hug to Rafa from us and we will see him in the Davis Cup totally recovered.

TN= Perfect, thanks to you.

It would be a shame if this injury hampers his season. I may not be his number one fan, but I do appreciate what he brings to the sport. I hope he recovers quickly and can get back to playing his best tennis.

He does have a tendancy to get injured a lot though, his brutal style does not help his body, yet it wins him titles.

what matches is he missing because of this?

Isn't he off until Indian Wells? That's like 5-6 weeks away.

Well, I wish him a quick recovery, but I won't be surprised at all if he dominates the clay season like every year and his injury will be long forgotten by then.

I no want to take nothing away from David. But it's clear I wasn't at my best and I wasn't able to compete from the very beginning. But I don't want to talk about injury. I don't want to take anything away from my good friend David.

amazing! people will forget the "injury" when he starts to dominate clay again. wonder if there will be another injury for the US Hardcourt season?

Rafa is an idiot for playing in Doha. Crazy that even his doc told him not to. It's really dumb, I mean it's as if he had no idea that he would be playing at the AO in one week. Turned out to be a VERY costly mistake for him.

Didn't realize a muscle tear, especially muscle involved in the legs, takes only 10 days to recover.

Mr. Nadal must be superman, excuse me superhombre, or has a magic potion.

If it is indeed a muscle tear, I hope he consider taking more time off to prolong his career.

You can see treatment there, there are 3 grades of a torn hamstring, the first one in a week, you can begin exercises. The grade 2 which I suspect he has, in about 2 weeks you can resume exercise. I still don't think, that that means he's good to play 5 setters at the end of Feb. But hey, his body. Maybe he doesn't want any titles this year.

That's what I said earlier, Nadal actually lost the AO in Doha. But people didn't agree, and insisted he was 100%.

And now he's probably making the same mistake again: exho + Davis Cup + IW, Miami + playing 4 weeks out of 5 before F.O (barca+ 3 1000's) == less chances of defending the channel slam.

Nadal not winning F.O is like leaving easy money on the table. The guy is light years ahead of the entire ATP "ON CLAY", so the only one who beats him over there is HIMSELF (which sorta happened in 2009).

If he's light years ahead of the rest of the ATP, then why didn't he win the WTF? Or go undefeated for 2010?

I hate being negative, but this time I completely agree with you, it's just really rotten planning on his part. I always think, okay he knows what he's doing, but then he went an played through the Ferrer match. He has his pride to thank, and if he wants to choose it over preserving his body, then it's his call. Honestly, there can be no decision worse than playing DC. It's freaking INDOOR HARD and best of 5. It's just a little hard to believe that in less than a month he would be ready for that. It's not like he's playing hopscotch on clay. *facepalm*
I wonder if he even listens to his doctors, or just keeps them around for show.

I think you right. Spain not need him for DC this early so he no need to play. He should skip.

This is strange. There was a translation of what Nadal was saying to his bench during the match after his medical time out posted on hthis board. Guess what he told them...he thought it was probably a muscle tear. Either something was lost in the translation from Spanish to English, or else Nadal is a doctor. Does anyone else remember that post of about a week ago?

So? He even said it in the presser, that he thinks it's a muscle tear of the hamstring. That's also what he was screaming to his team on court. He's not a doctor, but he's a pro athlete who knows his body. He's hurt himself enough to know where he's hurting and what is most likely is.

Why does he have to make any statement at all? Lots of players take 10+ days off after the AO, it's nothing abnormal. So he could've just "recovered" without having to make an excuse. This whole "I don't lose unless I'm injured" thing gets really old.

The distinction between a tear and a pull is dicey. 10 day recovery sounds more like a muscle pull to me, but I'm no doctor.

Everybody else says "I injured" when injured so it ok, no?

It all a trick...where they say he hasn't won a title for 4 months...and they clowber the whole season by winning a every clay court title at sight, winning Wimbledon and US open! Now it is the hamstring...last year it was the knees...passing the Australian curse to Djoker!

Trully though wish him the best in his recovery...Hamstring is very sensitive to rehab!

If it makes any difference, he did get the injury on the 26th of January, so it would technically be more like 15 days off?
I assume he would have put as little stress as possible on it between then and getting the scan back.
It's not making him miss any matches though, so no big deal I guess.

He's worse than Jankovic when it comes to being "injured" when he loses. Just say you were outplayed for once!

Don't act like a ****. Nadal's won a crapload of GS titles and would have no reason to lie about an injury. Anyone with even half a brain could tell his movement was way off playing Ferrer after the injury a couple games into the match.

You ever head of that thing call the Internets and the Googles?

You don't completely recover in 10 days. After 10 days, you can once against begin training.

Once Nadal is back, he'll go on a tear winning the FO and WO, and who knows USO too.

(sorry, saw the title and could not resist the pun).
