How To Grip Like P1?

I understand that P1 has been known for their impeccable gripping.

So how do they do it? (overgrip)

Murray is a client of P1 and has his overgrip wrapped in a way that does not make it raised. How is this done too?

I don't like raised ridges on my overgrips either so what I do for my frames is:
- get the thinnest leather grip from TW (TW brand)
- wrap the leather grip so that it barely overlaps (about 1mm) - this then leaves a valley / indent in the overlap area.
- I wrap the overgrip regularly (with normal overlap) but making sure that the overlap falls right in the middle over the leather grip overlap valley.

This gives me a perfectly flat overgrip (no ridges) and also because it's thin leather grip and well wrapped overgrip, the edges of the grip pallet are quite sharp - which I like.

but beware, the overgrip isn't the same width as your replacement grip then you won't be able to get smooth touch without a little magic.

agree with the above poster. I usually use TG original or wilson pro, and so I tend to stretch my leather grips pretty taught so that the width is the same as the overgrip. I've found that the Babolat leather is probably best for this, but the wider TW grips are also very good. just a matter of taking your time and not stretching the overgrip too much. I've done really good jobs before, and i have the reputation of being very good with overgrip wrapping.

I use the narrower TW leather grip and Wilson Pro Overgrip. Because I overlap of the leather grip a LOT less than I overlap the overgrip it actually works out perfectly for me. And I love the thinness of the TW leather grip - really forms to the grip pallet nicely.

Which TW width is a standard grip size...the 22mm wide grip or the 25mm wide grip? I too use the wilson overgrip, and would like to try this set up for better feel. Just curious on which width on the overgrip would compare to a standard width.

I do something similar but I use Babolat Leather on (2 of) my Volkls. On one of them I have Volkl Leather and I can never get that one to feel quite right...even though I prefer the Volkl leather...it's better quality. It IS "recycled" though...and too short to seriously "manipulate" if I want to cover the whole handle...so I just "deal with it".
I also currently use Yonex Supergrap (similar to Wilson Pro).

I use this one:
22mm x 1300mm x 1.3mm - 28 grams

And in addition I cut into the starting tapered part a bit more so it tapers down to a finer point. This way I can get less overlap when starting the grip at the butt end. I know some people prefer that the butt cap is fairly large but I like it when it's actually quite flat (kinda like Yonex does out of the box)

Edit: one other thing I do is use black electrical tape to finish the end of the grip / overgrip instead of the little tape that's provided with the grip. I find that it's a bit more elastic and forgiving so you can stretch it a bit to nicely finish the ending.

I've been following P1's wrapping technique for a while now and wrap/finish all my grips the way they do it. In my case leather + overgrip they don't overlap the leather at all and start from very low on the buttcap, even a bit lower than the end of the racquet. Then they go around the buttcap nicely and finish at the end of the grip. For the overgrip they don't go around the buttcap a lot, they just do it once then go straight down with the appropriate overlap, consistent strech, and get all the way to the throat of the racquet (helps on the two handed backhand) and finish the grip with black finishing tape, the same way you would do a replacement grip. Voila

i want to know this too...it seems a perfect finishing tape...unbelivable

they just make sure they cut it cleanly and take their time.. I can do mine like that if i'm using 1/2" wide electrical tape, my grips look just as pristince as theirs. too bad i dont care enough on my own racquets. lol. but if someone asks me to do a grip job, i take good care to do it very well.

Re: the overgripping technique, I apply mine so that MOST of the grip isn't raised. Impossible to avoid a rise near the butt cap.

All you do is wrap so that the angle of the wrap is less severe as you move 2-3" from the butt, then you start wrapping "edge to edge" to there is no overlap. Even as I wrap, I push the overgrip toward the lower edge to less any gap.

When completed, the grip feels very much like a synthetic grip and I also find that eliminating the raised edges help me avoid blisters in the heat. Smoother grip means less aggrevation on the skin IMO.

I believe the 22mm width is more standard.

Wow are you kidding? Seriously, they do every single grip on thousands of rackets the same. Absolutely the same. They start on the same bevel EVERY TIME. They do the same overlap EVERY TIME. They make sure the weight of all grips is the same. They use the same finishing tape every time, they use the same length of it every time. They do the same stretch every time, so that 1000 rackets will all feel absolutely identical when you hold them. As if you haven't changed rackets.

Step 1: Put on replacement grip
Step 2: Put on overgrip
Step 3: Charge $100 for a $10 job

Extremely difficult to do. :)
I attempted this yesterday and ended up with the reverse effect on my handle. Instead of overlaps, I had valleys. Horrible feel. I tried numerous times to match the valleys of the leather with the overlap of the overgrip, and could never get the entire handle to match. I ended up regripping the leather flat without valleys, and placed the overgrip strectching thin.

Since I live in Tampa, I may just go knock on P1's door to get it done :)

Just take your time, also strong hands do help a lot. It is also good to have a good eye for symmetry and lenghts. For the replacement leather grip I use Babolat's which already comes with an edge less thick to allow the overlapping without problems, if you manage to put the overgrip to match the leather grip you should be fine.

It's easy to get a flat grip. Wrap your leather grip flat with no ridges or valleys. Start your overgrip and on the first 1-2 goes around overlap it a bit so they don't fold over during play. Then just nudge the rest of them up to each other so there is no overlap or gap. It's very easy to do. I just started doing it. The first 1-2 overlaps you cannot feel but are necessary, for me, to prevent the grip from folding up.

Best IMHO starts with a vintage Fairway grip. Found a black grip on a Ultra FPK, tan on a Max 200G. Ditch those old sticks and get the easiest leather grip to wrap.

:) Of course I was kidding. My point was, to most of us, a $100 grip job would feel no different than a $10 grip job. I can modify a 4 5/8" racquet to feel exactly like a 4 3/8" ...in my very average hands. In the hands of a pro, they would notice the difference. Thus, in my very average hands, if I grip a racquet half-way decent ($10 grip job), it would be indistinguishable from a $100 job.

If overgrips have 2,4 or 2,5cm width, which replacement grip(with or without overlap) will allow to get a flat set-up.
Just curious to try it...

Yes, Nate does wrap grips and overgrips pretty well, that's not where he has earned his rep. What separates P1 from the rest of the pack, is that Nate asks his clients to supply him with the favorite racquet that feels just right. He then creates a custom mold of the pallet, so that he can spin off an exact replica to all of the other frames in the bag. If the hero grip has some odd asymmetrical quality to it, then the replicas will too. He then recreates that entire grip, layer by layer.

His clients are amazingly sensitive to the slightest change in feel. Sampras could feel a change in the the diameter of his grip due to leather compression over time, and could detect changes measuring width of a human hair. Soderling had similar sensitivity, and the solve for Robin was to create a custom mold that emulates the bevels of a leather grip, a flared buttcap and room for his pinky finger where it dangles off the buttcap.

Then there are the special requests... a nearly round grip for doubles specialist Leander Paes, a monster sized 5 and 3/16" grip for monster sized Ivo Karlovic. He can create just about any shape or size you ask him to, and can create it the same way, the same size, every time.

what's the method and match(grip/overgrip widths)?

It's been a lot of trial and error for me. I've found that Babolat leather grips work best with Tourna XL (dry or tacky) since it's a touch wider than other overgrips it will lay down perfectly inside the "valleys" created by the leather grip. Funny enough Babolat overgrips barely work as long as you don't pull too tight. Something like a Yonex overgrip won't work with Babolat because it's too narrow but will work on Gamma and Wilson leather grips which are not as wide as the Babolat grips.

Say I wanted to take a Head Liquidmetal Radical and change the pallet from the old rectangular shape to the more rounded one of the Head Speed line. What would Priority One (or others) charge to do that?

I've tried to purchase the pallet myself, but have had no luck finding it online for under $60. And at that rate, I'd rather pay someone to put it on for me correctly rather than butchering it myself.

any good match would be appreciated, thanks!!
also, where do you start with the sticky part of the overgrip.
I feels like you should start gripping higher on the handle to find out where to really start on the lower part.

Which leather grip is closer to the feel and color of the P1?

The former Gamma leather grip? Head finest? TW brand? Tourna?

That’s exactly how I’ve done it for years except you explained it much better than I probably could have!

The one challenge I have is that some overgrips come in a width that makes it hard to get the overlap to fall exactly into the valley of the leather grip. Tournagrip, for instance, comes in a wider width than most other overgrips, so I’ve actually had to cut a couple of millimeters off the width with a pair of scissors.

If you’re going to be using an overgrip it doesn’t really matter which leather grip you use (in my experience). The TW leather grips are perfectly suited to serve as “under”grips in that they are cheaper and come in different widths and thicknesses.

If you want to wrap or use the one like Federer or Nishikori use then, use the Wilson overgrip which is made in Japan (more tacky and thicker than normal wilson pro overgrip!).
