Milos Raonic

Had been unable to see much of Milos until today.

Not the easiest of tasks taking on David Ferrer on clay. Despite his defeat though he's still had a good run. Winning two marches against Llodra and Gulbis isn't bad at all for someone probably much better equipped for indoor, hard and probably grass.

People really talk up Milos - that's nothing to do with him, just others' talk. Ferrer obviously, is older, more experienced and far higher ranked - the match perked up in the 2nd set and maybe Milis could have taken it to a TB.

Overall a good effort from the young Serb - sorry Canadian!

Tbf, winning from Llodra on gravel isn't really all that much of a challenge. I love his game, but s&v on gravel has never worked on that level.

He is Canadian but he is not a Serb. He is Montenegran.

It's excellent that he got to the round of 16 in his first ATP clay tournament. He had just a few hours of clay experience and he will be getting much better with a couple more hours. LOL

Thanks for the spoiler, idiot.
So you clicked on a link with the title of a player that presumably you'd set aside an afternoon of uninterrupted lounge chair DVR match-matching, only to be shocked (shocked I say) that someone might give away a result?

Seems to me you may be the numbnuts.

1989 was an almost, 1983 was a success as were the Aussie wins in the 50s and 60s. Yeah, it was a different time but it did happen and would again if the poly was banned and the balls were livened up. Oh, any win over a veteran lefty in his home field by a first-timer on Euroclay is an accomplishment.

Barcelona & Estoril. 5th or 6th seed in Estoril I think!

This quick rise to the top of tennis would take a very, very mature 20 year to be able to handle it. Fortunately he has a very level headed coach who has given him not only great tennis instruction but has also helped him with things like court demeanour and expectation. Raonic is also very smart and has a very good upringing by an an also very smart family...and all of Canada to support him.

Go Milos!

Thank you for the insight Josip. I didn't know you had strong feelings on labeling a people on how the mountains look. 'Montenegrins' consider themselves Serb but not Serbian because they do not live in Serbia proper. But, half the country does consider themselves 'Serbian'. During the Ottoman times Serbs retreated into Crna Gora, thus those who stayed feel they are the noblest Serbs. Also, Serbian Orthodoxy is the religion. The language he speaks is Serbian as well.

If you would like to learn more, please go to Njegos.org

You are an idiot; it doesn't matter how many posts you have. there is no such thing as Montenegrin ethnicity- there are serbs that live there. They speak Serbian, they are Christian Orthodox. The ones who are not are either muslims or Albanians.

But a Christian from Montenegro who speaks Serbian is a Serbian. the whole Montenegrin ethnicity thing was created by the communist regime under Tito- it doesn't exist. There are some exceedingly proud (and somewhat foolish) Serbs who live in Montenegro insist that they are distinct and superior to other Serbs because they are more pure in blood; claiming that their chicks didn't get banded out by the "dirty" turks in the Ottoman occupation- because the Serbs in Montenegro ran into the mountians and fought a rebel war against the Turks for centuries. Learn your history; and stop talking sh*t about Roanic and him being Montenegrin- you clown! I'm not even Serbian and I know these facts.

Ummm... what???? I don't understand why you people took the time to address something as mundane as his country of origin.

His family emigrated from Montenegro, not Serbia; therefore, he is Montenegrin. That's why pound cat called him Montenegran. If he was born in Serbia, he'd be called Serbian. You guys seem to be looking to pick a fight that doesn't exist. He wasn't making a political statement, he was addressing his original nationality and correcting the OP.

You're an idiot. He was actually born in Yugoslavia, so does that mean he's Yugoslavian? I was correcting poundcat because obviously his lack of understanding of European history.

Furthermore, your buddy poundcat took the time to correct someone on the note of him being Serbian. Yet, you happen to not mention that, and only point out how I had responded to his incorrect statement.

Do you understanding how many million Serbs live across the world (esp. in what is now known as Bosnia)? Would you consider them not to be Serbs (by ethnicity) because of how the borders happen to look presently?

I had to correct that thread because a lot of misinformation goes around these threads and because of certain misstatements that are made, they eventually turn into fact here because no one is informed enough to correct these statements.

Flyinghippos, another thing you are wrong on, is that his family emigrated. They temporarily lived in Canada, of which his mother and sister currently reside in Crna Gora. Crna Gora means black mountain. Go to Njegos.org and get a clue!

You are an even bigger idiot than poundcat. Are you pountcat's little bi**h or something? You are from Mordor? Like that doesn't reek of total internet tennis nerd sitting in your underwear in your parent's house and whacking off to pictures of Ralph.

You obviously don't understand a thing about European history either; there was no country known as Montenegro when Raonic was born- Montenegro became Montenegro in 2006! Milos Raonic is Serbian- Serbian is more than a political country with borders on a map- it is an ethnicity. You know, like Jewish (although I am not trying to compare Serbians to Jews) even though for like 1000 years Jews had no country, they were all over the place, in Spain in Poland,m in England they still called themselves Jews because that is their ethnicity. Do you get it, you clown?

You should read erik von kuehnelt-leddihn "the intelligent American's Guide of Europe" to learn something about Europe but being as you are from Mordor and are probably not an "intelligent American" or Canadian you will not have the mental capability.

Poundcat incorrectly corrected the OP, so I choose to correct Poundcat- there is nothing political about it per se, I am just tired of people sounding like idiots when they spout off about Milos being Montenegrin.

I don't understand why you need to be so hostile about this. I'm merely pointing out the fact that you guys just seem to pounce on pound cat for what seemed to be kind of a knee-jerk reaction. And if he was so happen misinformed, there's no need to go on some tirade.

Furthermore, your buddy poundcat took the time to correct someone on the note of him being Serbian. Yet, you happen to not mention that, and only point out how I had responded to his incorrect statement.

I happen to actually address this at the end of my post

he was addressing his original nationality and correcting the OP.

I feel to continue this discussion in atleast a meaningful way, we need to draw a distinction between "ethnicity" and "nationality" I'm chinese, but I live in Canada; I would refer to myself as "Canadian" not "Chinese" in reference to nationality. Pound cat was referencing his nationality.

Tolkien's novels are great pieces of literature, IMO and the LOTR movies were amazing, don't be a hater. I don't feel the need to waste any more of my time writing any sort of articulate response to your hate-filled, angry tirade. Instead, here are some random images!

I tried to be civil but I'm done. While you seem to be scrambling to post some image effectively ending whatever legitimacy this "debate" had, I'd like to conclude my position. What's irking you is the title of his ethnicity despite what pound cat was doing, which was addressing his nationality. No one born in the former USSR is still called a soviet when referencing their nationality, they'd be called Russian, their nationality is based on what is the current state.

That is all, enjoy your p*ssing contest

I'm amazed by this recent wave of Serbian/Montenegrian/Croatian/Whatever mega-trolls. Does it relate to Djokovic's victories or it's just the return of GJ003 with reinforcements?

You obviously got smashed with logic so you cannot respond; so instead you put these stupid pictures up. I'm surprised you are such a ****; usually Chinese people are at least logical it must be the Canadian water. And who cares about identifying yourself by artificial national borders? What are you some some neo-con statist? Fact is you don't have a clue about European history- the question is how is Raonic Montenegrin when during the time he was born there there was no such thing, when he left there there was no such place, historically there was no such place, and there is no such ethnicity (only in Communist Tito lie propaganda and the whole pure blood anti-Turk story).
I guess when you spend all your time worrying about Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and their fight against Mordor you don't have time read real history. Do you play tennis like a hobbit?

You are very misinformed. Ukraine is made up of a lot of Russians, and they are not called Ukraines. Furthermore Russia has many ethnicities including: Tatars, Armenians, etc. and none of them would like you to call them Russian. Like I said, get a clue!

You are a statist idiot. The state does not define you or your ethnicity. What if you were Chinese, like you say are, and you lived on the border of China and the USSR in the 1970's. Say you were born in the USSR but you were a Chinese guy. Are you then USSRian? you fool!

I don't think anyone directly posted anything to you? Obviously someone did give a cucumber or maybe a green bean about where he was from, which is why they decided to post their nonsense. From that, I decided to set the facts straight before some nimrods take that as fact. Seems like if you talk bullshyte here it's OK, but when you b*tch slap someone with the truth, it's an attack and nobody cares.

I didn't start it, the OP did correctly, and then Poundcat incorrectly corrected him. So the Serbian vs Montenegrin aspect was explicitly sated from the get go.

Nationality is defined by artificial borders made by man sure, but what pound cat was explicitly referring to WAS his nationality. Ethnicity and Nationality are two completely different concepts, both of which you seem to be completely ignorant of. Russia didn't exist when Sharapova was born; it was the Soviet Union but no one seems to insist on calling her a Soviet. Raonic might be an ethnic Serbian, you'd be right if you said that and I'd wholeheartedly agree but the discussion at hand is about his nationality, NOT his ethnicity.

It is impossible to even reason with you, that is exactly what i am saying. The fact that USSR existed didn't make anyone USSRian- it was just a statist concept. So of course people from there are Russian, or Chinese, or Georgian, or Armenian- and on and on. Same way that if someone os born in Montenegro on and they are of Serbian ethnicity (which they all are except for the minority Albanian and Slavic muslin groups) then they are not Montenegrin they are Serbian.

How do you know he meant nationality. Furthermore, who cares his nationality, his nationality (which government oppresses him at the moment) is Canadian. Whatever government comes to power doesn't change the blood in you. Quit being so statist in defining someone by borders made by oppressing governments. He's Serbian, no more clowns post that he's Montenegrin.

People still called citizens of the USSR "soviets" though. But we're debating from two completely different perspectives. Here's my assessment of the confusion; I was addressing pound cat as if he was referencing nationality, you were addressing pound cat from the assertion that he was referencing ethnicity.

There, end pointless discussion that digresses from the real point of this thread: How Milos Raonic is an awesome player who lost to a good player in a big tourny

Do you think that anyone in the USSR didn't think of Stalin as a Georgian? He could barely speak passable Russian; his real name was Joseph Jugashvilli. The USSR tried to cover up all ethnicity and move different ethnic groups around their artificial union in an attempt to destroy families, religion, and ethnic bonds so that the people would obey their evil state- but it didn't work. Do you think that we should even legitimize such an evil institution by taking terms like "soviet" as a replacement for ethnicity seriously? When all "soviet" means is committee? you are a statist clown.

I tried to provide a plausible reason for the apparent conclusion but it seems like you're still having a hard time registering. I made a fine distinction between "ethnicity" and "nationality," you're putting words in my mouth. I never at any point made the suggestion that nationality supplements ethnicity and my mentioning of "soviet was strictly regarding nationality and for the past four posts I've tried to offer a reasoning behind the perceived confusion.
