What is the Nadal brain switch that enables him

and other champions like Federer to switch from a terrible set of tennis to flawless tennis in the next set as Nadal did in the 3rd set against Murray?

Is this a tangible thing or is this an intangible that makes a player a champion?

Analysis. I've done this myself many times. Just thinking to yourself what worked before, and what wasnt working, and stop doing what wasn't working. Also, making sure I'm completely focused helps alot. Lol.

I bet it is tagible thing...since there is no such thing as unlearnable.

A tangible thing is somethig that is measurable..;eg the guys forehanld will get better An intangible thing is something that happens inside a person's mind that turns him onto the I will win this mode. If asked the person involved may not even be able explain how it all happened, A mystery of the mind (plus talent of course)

Confidence is the word.

Flawless tennis? SERIOUSLY? I mean Nadal played well ONLY in ONE game of the match i.e at 5-1 in the 3rd set, by which time it was all over.

Basically Nadal played the same pusher tennis of set 2 for 50% of set 3 . It was just that Murray made TONS of UFEs coz he lost steam and maybe his elbow was bothering him. Or he was just not able to maintain the same level.

I have NEVER seen a Nadal clay match in which it is set three and 2-0 i.e Nadal has played 2 hours 30 minutes and hit ONLY 2 forehand winners!!!! Think of that...

This is probably the worst match Nadal has played on clay since a long long time.

How bad could it be? He won! Players are never perfect throughout a match. They have lapses in concentration and a million other things that could take them off their game. Nadal is human. The important thing is that he was able to collect himself and become both physically and mentally tough in the final set. As they say, a win is a win. That is really all that matters.

At one point even Nadal was seriously moonballing almost every shot. Not his usual heavy topspun shots, but seriously a semi-lob every single time. Gets pretty annoying when it clips the baseline, forcing a shorter ball, which he then puts away.

This is probably the worst match Nadal has played on clay since a long long time.

He didn't look great against Dolgopolov last year in Madrid (despite not losing a set), and then he dropped a set against Almagro in the next match - but it ended up being inconsequential, in the end. He went on to play well in the Madrid final and ramp through the French Open draw.

Anything short of an unexpected loss doesn't change Nadal's status as top dog on clay even one iota, in my opinion. A bad set and a sloppy match is much better than injuries (*knock on wood*), a fundamental technique problem (service yips, shanking, etc, etc), or a losing streak. Sloppy matches happen, but Nadal doesn't usually get into slumps for no reason whatsoever.

I don't think this match is the beginning of some sort of drop of level on clay like some people are hinting at. Just my 2 cents.

You have to be able to put your emotions aside. If you can't get your emotions under control you can't get anything done.

nadal didn't play the whole match. murray played just better than him and then got tired so that nadal could take the third.

nadal is mentally super strong, maybe even the best ever. he often finds a way to win even if the opponent is outplaying him.

The asss picking is akin to acupuncture insofar as it can modulate Nadal's basal ganglia.

He is employing a technique from 1000s of years ago to release his inner energy:

The lower centre, named Muladhara cakra or cakra root of the nadis, placed in the intermediate region between genitals and an*s is the seat of the personal Shakti that appears coiled among common men (named kundalini: the coiled one), in repose and with the appearance of a serpent.

The purpose of the system is to make the serpentine power ascend from Muladhara cakra to Sahasrara; whoever reaches this union becomes a jivanmukta (note 21), a person who has attained liberation.

You learn something new every day on this forum. I thought it was a cross between a tangerine and a apple.
