2011 NFL Draft

1. a shame to give up on Claussen so soon. not that he is gonna be great, but even new coach rivera said he was put in a horrible position and had very little help. give him some help and maybe he could be ok. newton could be a bust anyway... i say draft somebody else.. his c*cky attitude pizzez me off and he lies most of the time when asked a question. i am 100% sure he already knows where he is going (probably #1) but he acts like he "hasn't heard anything". just remember that nfl combine where he overthrew everything!
update.. haha.. Newton to Panthers!
2. very curious about Skins... Rex Grossman looked ok to me, but they seem to want Gabbert. I think they could get decent QB if they moved up somehow to Rnd2. but they could really use Darius or Fairley.
if Julio Jones is available.. they would have to take him though, right!?

aj green is a great pick. throw it up in the endzone and let him go get it= TD!
falcons gave up a TON for 6th pick... julio jones. love him but that was way too many picks!
Wow, locker picked before gabbert.
guess Skins can get gabbert or fairley now. hrmmmm

Skins traded with Jax, who took Gabbert.

Locker at 8? Someone said the Titans got rid of VY for a white Vince Young, I lol'd. :D

Favre comparisons already just b/c they had similar college numbers.

Jax trades up for Gabbert? Skins could've used a QB, I dunno what the heck they're thinking. Gabbert seems overrated IMO, comes out of nowhere to be touted as top 10 pick.

Raiders have 0 1st round picks (thanks Richard Seymour), but hopefully trade up to possibly get Kaepernick from Nevada.

Skins need more picks BAD cuz they keep trading them away in bad moves.
dunno who they will take @16
prince amakamura?
cameron jordan?
ryan kerrigan?
OT costanzo?

i hope they don't take dalton here.. but knowing the skins.. yikes!
locker is a hard worker.. like Tebow but with better NFL arm.. i have no problem with that pick. but labor dispute making teams pick QBs 10spots higher than they probably should go.
i think the Skins would've taken Ponder... but surprisingly he went crazy early!

They're owned by Dan Snyder.

I dont think a bengals fan can make fun of Snyder, he at least tries to win and spends money. Mike Brown is the worst owner in the NFL. The Bengals are the poorest run organization in the NFL, maybe in all sports. This coming from a Bengals fan (well more like an ex-Bengals fan) I cant stand watching them anymore. Its like watching a ship sink.

So glad my Bills didn't select Gabbert. Dareus was the right pick. I would've been happy with Von Miller but he didn't drop. I'm still not convinced that Dareus is better than Fairley.

Gabbert is the most overated player in this draft. Locker is going to be a much better pro. Watching film of the guy specifically the Illinois game he constantly sense pressure that's not there, even when there's a 3 man rush.

He's so antsy in the pocket, scrambling outside outside the pocket vs stepping up and sliding around. He doesn't have the pocket presence needed for a NFL QB. Not to mention he played in a 1-read offense.

Biggest surprise was definitely Ponder going 12. Didn't watch any film of him but still surprising. Fairley dropping was also a surprise. Detroit has a monster front now with Fairley, Suh, and Venden Bosch. I think they are the #2 team in the NFC north.

Round 2 for my Bills they have a lot of choices. They could go Akeem Ayers. Da'Quan Bowers is still on the board though I'm not sure he would be a great fit for us. Kyle Rudolph is going to be a stud and TE is a need so he's an option. Unfortunately, I'm not high on any of the remaining OT's so can't suggest we take one.

Personally, given all the film I've watched I think Ryan Mallett is without a doubt the #1 QB in this draft. Sure, he ran a 5.3 but he has the ability to slide around in the pocket just fine. He can make all the throws and has a great football IQ for reading defenses and making reads. I really hope the Bills take him.

Can't believe the Broncos didn't do something to get one of the defensive linemen in the mid to late 1st round. Von Miller may be good, but when teams can score 50 points on you running up the middle you need some interior defensive line help. The Broncos have several linebackers who are either good or at least have potential. I'm surprised they didn't take one of the stud defensive linemen with the 2nd pick. Too bad this year's groundrules made trades difficult.
I would be OK with Miller because I'm sure he will be really good if they could have gotten one of the D-tackles in the late 1st round and picked up another defensive lineman with the early second round pick.
They may end up with none of the large group of top D-linemen if 2 guys are picked before them in the first 4 picks of the 2nd round.

The Bengals are not even the worst run franchise in the league, that would belong to the Detroit Lions.

Lions are moving in the right direction, good young players and got a steal in Fairley. Since Millen left they've been better off.

Cincy seems doomed since Mike Brown is more about saving money than actually trying to win games and runs all his best players out of town.

Redskins have been an embarrassment, but at least Snyder tries, even if it almost always ends up backfiring.

I'd throw my Raiders in there TBH, fire a coach after he leads the team to first non-losing season in over half a decade. Al needs to go sooner rather than later to the owner's box in the sky.

Loved the draft last night.

My thoughts:

HUGE reach for Newton. I think he's a million dollar athelete with a nickel for a brain. Not that Clauson is the answer, but he certainly got no help from anywhere last year. We may be singing a different tune about Newton in 5 years, but right now, I don't think that Carolina made the most prudent choice.

Love Von Miller to Denver. Denver has a lot of holes to fill, but I think a pass rushing LB will do a lot to shore up their defense.

Surprised that Gabbert dropped below Locker. I think Locker is the better NFL QB, but everyone was fawning over Gabbert for the last month or so. I think Locker has tremendous upside - even if he wasn't accurate in college, he had almost no receivering corps to throw to.

Ponder at 12. Ouch. Again, in 3-4 years we'll see where he ends up, but the one plus is that he is a very smart kid, and the Vikes have a history of drafting athletes that can't run an offense because their IQ is about the same as their shoe size, so Ponder is an improvement. He may prove to be a good QB, but I don't think he'll ever be a game changer.

Really surprised Bowers is still on the board. Same with Dalton. I still think Dalton will prove to be the best QB in the draft - he's the 2011 Drew Brees - undersized, not a big arm, but smart and has a history of turning around programs.

I think that the 3 smartest picks based on need/talent are:

1. A.J. Green to Cincy

2. Julio Jones to Atlanta - yes, they gave up a haul, but to give Matty Ice another weapon to throw to is only going to make Roddy White that much more dangerous.

3. Gabe Carimi to Chicago - Wow. Cannot believe that he dropped that far, but he's a monster player for a team that was a weak O-line away from being a Super Bowl team.

Honerable mention to: Nate Solder (NE), Anthony Costanzo (IND), Nick Fairley (DET)

Fairley to Detroit? Teams in the NFC North are not going to have a good time trying to stop Suh and Fairley - in 2 years, the Lions will be a force. They have a core of young talent that is arguably one of the best in the NFL (Stafford, Megatron, Suh, Fairley).

Any bets on second round?

I bet the Vikes don't only pick once tonight. They will likely take an OL (hopefully a tackle to slide Bryant "The Matador" McKinnie or Phil "The Big Orange Roadcone" Loadholt into guard. Would have loved to have seen Carimi fall into that spot.

Bowers doesn't make it past 43, Dalton won't make either. I'd be surprised if he lasts past the Bengals pick. Kaepernick and Stanzi may just slide into the third round.

Gabbert pretty much came out of nowhere to be a top 10 pick, as someone that follows CFB relatively closely I'd never even heard of him before guys like McShay and Kiper started hyping him up. I'm always a believer in on field production over having good numbers at the scouting combine, and 16 TDs/9 INTs isn't that impressive IMO.

But he ends up in a good situation in Jacksonville, sit a few yrs behind Garrard and come in w/ one of the best RB in MJD behind you.

This years' QB class was weak. Once Luck stayed at Stanford that point became more clear. Teams looked at the fact that no QBs the past few years have really been busts (Ryan, Flacco, Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman, Bradford, Tebow) and were willing to reach for a franchise guy.

I think that the jury is out on Tebow (he definitely outperformed what I expected, but we'll see how he shakes out), but the rest of the crew has definitely been impressive.

Of the QB's in this draft, I think the order of NFL success will go:

1. Dalton
2. Locker
3. Ponder/Gabbert (toss a coin)
4. Netwon

I just don't see Newton having the work ethic that it takes to really succeed as an NFL QB. He's a higher profile Vince Young IMO - a guy whose incredible atheletic talent made up for a lack of football IQ in college, but may not have the work ethic and IQ to adjust to the pro game.

Locker at #8 was unbelievable. He was at best average in the Pac 10 last year.

Guys should watch tape on Gabbert. No pocket presence. He's a like scared little boy in there. He scrambles to the outside of perfectly good pockets and makes his line look terrible.

Mallett must be a mass murderer or something. For character issues to drag him this far down. He's the consensus best pure passer in this draft with a great football iq.

In other news: With the entire 2nd round the 2020 New England Patriots select...

I don't get it. Newton didn't take many snaps under center at AU and got knocked for it by guys like McShay, yet Gabbert played in a spread offense at Mizzou and rocketed up the draft boards out of nowhere.

Youtube comments comparing him to Alex Smith...that may well be the case.

...

It's big risk, though, whatever it is. Dan Marino dropped a long way because of drug use in college and he turned out quite well. A lot of other guys who had the talent were complete busts, though.
Mallett also doesn't do well with a rush up the middle. He will have to fix that or none of the rest matters.

I dont get the newton pick.

If he is a sure thing cant miss prospect then maybe, but there is too many question marks with him and the panthers in general that I dont that pick was justified.

Actually, Snyder and Brown are flip sides of a coin--one spends tons of money to make awful decisions; the other makes awful decisions because he won't spend money.

Yes, Brown is a terrible owner, who inherited a team from one of the game's greatest figures and turned it into a steaming pile; he'll then pass it on to his equally clueless family after he's gone. But at least he isn't Dan Snyder:

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/articles/40063/the-cranky-redskins-fans-guide-to-dan-snyder/

My particular favorite is the lawsuit against the old lady who Snyder sued after she could no longer afford payments on the $50,000 seat license her family had bought. Makes Mike Brown's three-dollar glasses of stadium tap water look benign.

I don't like Newton at #1 either. I'm not a fan of big physical QBs with only decent passing accuracy (Rothlisberger is an obvious counter example).

If Stafford can stay healthy we'll finally have 2 decent games to watch on Thanksgiving.

I think the entire NFC north has to draft OL in response to Detroit grabbing Nick Fairley.

Seriously, Detroit's inside rush with Suh and Fairley, both young and dominant, is going to be BRUTAL.

Smart pick GB on Sherrod, Rodgers is the most valuable player on that team and needs protected.

Smart pick Bears on Carmini, we need OL either way. (But Angelo continues to prove he cannot manage a draft even when making a smart choice)

WTF Vikings...Ponder? Drafting the white TJax?

I think Ponder will be fine. He played in a pro-style offense and did pretty well with a fairly weak team. Durability is the issue--compounded by the fact that his division is stocking up on mass-murderers at DL. (That's not to say that he wasn't a reach at #12, when they could've gotten him later.)

The surprise is Rudolph. They've already got Shiancoe; either draft an actual OL or shore up the defense.

Loving the Bengals getting Dalton.

Ponder reminds me of Trent Edwards. Highly intelligent, average arm, struggles with the deep ball, quick release and injury prone.

Mallett to the Patriots. Lame. I was kinda hoping the Bills would've taken him in the 3rd round.

I like the Pats taking Mallett. Any character issues usually disappear w/ Belichick around, and he's a possible legit successor to Brady.

Agreed. I think it's a very prudent pick by the Pats. Guy has an absolute cannon for an arm and will get the opportunity to sit behind Brady for a while and learn how to be a professional QB, both on and off the field. Not to mention learn how to grow exceptional hair and hook up with supermodels, which I'm sure Mallett is a fan of.

If he can realize that the two are related, it might be enough motivation for him to become a great quarterback.

.

The problem is that about the only position the Broncos aren't weak or old at is linebacker and they already have one top pass rushing linebacker - Dumerville, who was hurt last year - and their other linebackers are pretty good at it. So they spent the only chance they may ever have to get an impact defensive lineman (or even two or three if they worked things right - so they'd look like or surpass Detroit) to fill the only position they didn't have a need at on defense.
The Broncos weakness from the 80's to now - 30 years - even during the Super Bowl years - was not having good Defensive Linemen. They always had to work around it with fancy schemes and blitz packages. Looks like it will be a problem for many more years.

Hes basically inheriting the ability to order a pizza while in the pocket. Can't be a better QB situation as far as the draft is concerned.

Dont know much about Denvers D schemes. Do they run a 3-4 or 4-3 most of time. If its 4-3 then having playmaking linebackers is more important to having super great DTs. In a 4-3 you need big body DTs to clog the middle and let your linebackers make the plays.

Look at the Ravens D in 2000 You had Sam Admas and Siragusa (both Signed as FA's) in the middle and Had Burnett and McCrary on the ends. The had 3 good linebackers in Boulware Lewis and Sharper.

So if Denvers is running the 4-3 the Von Miller pick is great. And if they run 3-4 he becomes a player like Derrick Thomas lining up at DE sometimes to wreck havoc. I think they were samrt to take him.

Ran the 3-4 last year, but going back to a 4-3 with John Fox as coach. Their greatest weakness is being unable to stop the run, especially inside. Raiders ran up over 50 points on them by running. Chiefs ran up as many ponits as they pleased by running. An outside pass-rusher that can only rush on a blitz isn't going to help untl they can stop the run. Maybe they can get some free-agents, but they've been trying those patches for 30 years. Could have picked up Miller and then still gotten one or two of the D-linemen by trading other draft picks, but nothing.

but 4-3 DTs are there to take up space not make plays. They free up blockers letting the linebackers make the plays.

A couple DTs in the Chris Hovan Mold would be perfect. If you have good LBs they make the tackles.

And Von Miller has enough speed to get outside and force runners OB.

Its a good start for the Broncos D IMO.

The Broncos don't even have anyone who is a decent space eater. GM Brian Xanders was on the radio today and addressed the question about what are they going to do on DT. He mentioned one of the guys who was a failure from last year, free agency (though the pickings look slim and they will have to overpay) and most distressngly was excited that they would have the second shot at guys who were put on waviers. Looks like the Broncos starters will be guys not even good enough to be reserves on other teams.

Perhaps like NBA teams they are trying to lose all their games next year so they will get good draft picks again - it might be a short season this year anyway, if they play at all. They will have strong players all around, but won't be able to win any games because they can't stop the run. Then next year maybe fill in the D-line and have a lot of good young talent with two solid drafts.

Would drafting a DT fix everything for Denver? No it wont but, players with Von's skillset do not come around too often, and there was not a Suh type player at DT. Von in collge to me reminded me of Derrick Thomas when he was wrecking havoc. I highly doubt Von will ever have 7 sacks in one game, but he has that skillset, but may be better in pass coverage.

And ive always said to my friend who is a Bills fan and gets mad when they are 4-12 every year. that at least they get a better pick than if they were 8-8. The Bills just usually find a way to draft dumb. Although I think they were smart this year to avoid any QB's. They will probably suck again and get a play at Luck.

I agree regarding Miller's skillset. I think one effect that this will have is it will free DJ Williams to be a playmaker in the run stopping game.

I think Miller will be the first player from this draft to make the Pro Bowl. Just a hunch, but it will either be him or Dareus.
