Del Potro's Meteoric Rise in the Rankings

The first time he came to California this year, it was in February to play SAP in San Jose, and at that time Juan Martin was ranked ATP World Tour No. 484.

What a difference five months makes ... in Palito's case 465 levels to be exact ... wow! When's the last time somebody did that?

This week (July 25-31, 2011) Delpo is seeded No. 2 in the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, CA, and he's currently ranked ATP World Tour No. 19.

Welcome back to Cali, Juan Martin! Your fans are very proud of you!

Best of luck in the Olympus US Open Series and in USO 2011!!!

There is no doubt that he belongs in the top 10, and I fully expect him to be there by the end of the year.

Yeah, hopefully Del Potro will be back in his customary #5 position after this season.

Considering it is all HC from here on and he stays injury free, I assume he will be there indeed by the end of the year. I am a huge fan and it would break my heart to see him getting hit by yet another malaise.

Took the words right outta my mouth! :(

It's definitely gonna be a fun summer, with Delpo knocking on the door to the Top 10, and the current placeholders trying to keep him out :)

Nothing changed last week in the top 9, but last week's World No. 11 (Jurgen Melzer) fell a full 7 levels to just above Juan at No. 18, even tho he played Stuttgart.

JMDP didn't play last week, and he's coming from Argentine winter into USA summer, but he's done well here on the hot hard courts, having beaten ARodd for the title in 2008.

Nice interview from the Los Angeles Tennis Center @ UCLA yesterday:

. . . Del Potro arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday from his home in Tandil, Argentina, and he will be the second-seeded player at the Farmers Classic tennis tournament, which begins Monday. Del Potro will play his first match Wednesday night against the winner of a first-round battle between Michael Berrer of Germany and James Blake. . . .

I was just skimming but when I got to the end of this sentence I suddenly thought.... "Wait, did Xavier Malisse hit Del Potro before? How did I miss this?"

:D

And to think, he could still gain ranking points in the first 3-4 months next season since he was still coming back at the start this year. He only reached the second round at this years Australian Open for example.

Good luck to him, it's great to see him back, that forehand is beastly!

There is obviously alot of points to be gained next year. He ran into Djok and Nadal at the 3rd and 4th rounds of RG and Wimbledon respectively this year. Being in the top 8 next year would mean he would avoid these players until at least the QFs. Also he had to withdraw from Madrid after two matches and didn't play Rome because of the hip injury. Not to mention the results from Miami, and even IW, can be improved on.

If things go well (no injuries), Delpo should be back to his "normal" ranking of #3-5 by this time next year.

I'm hoping he can make top eight for the year end tournament. That surface suits him pretty well.

Can't really see a reason he wouldn't, outside of top 4 the field kinda lacks depth at the moment, I'd be really surprised if Delpo doesn't qualify for WTF if he stays healthy of course.

Delpo is already #8 in the race points, and he'll end #7 in the race points after LA if he reaches the semis. No reason he can't qualify for the WTF-2k11! :)

and as you say, no reason why not . . .

This week, Delpo's in Montreal for the Rogers Cup, for which he was runnerup in 2009. After beating JNieminen to progress to Rnd 2, Del's round 2 match was rained out and rescheduled for today vs. MCilic. Meanwhile, he did improve a level in the world tour rankings this week! :D

You know, it's so interesting that a former champion of the tournament is a dark horse. Tennis is so ... unpredictable.

Vamos Delpo!

Browsing through this thread a for the 1st times the Jaws theme song comes to mind. All the players above Delpo looking over their shoulders and running in terror as he approaches. But its useless as one by one he slowly overtakes them.

Okay yeah, I don't see him cracking to top 4 any time soon but still...

perhaps practice for DC in december?

=====

too bad for Melzer, who shanked a lot in front of the hometown crowd :(
but
stepanek was all over the place stellar, he and delpo seeming to get along just fine, won the match 63, 64 ... their team is into the QF, where they will face the austrian team of haider-maurer/oswald

Looking at the rankings posted above, I'm impressed that Ferrer has put so much space between him and all the good players below him. I expect DelPotro to be up there soon.

He's bunked off half the year with illness yet when I've worked out he'll just drop down to a mere #9 or #10, only if his 'friends' below him don't suddenly turn on their hidden GOAT modes.

I miss Robin. Never thought it would happen, but he added something and now that he's gone, I miss him ... stay away from the contagion, Robin! ... guess we won't see him again till next year ... hope he comes back 100%

K so, Homeboy, what are your calculations for Delpo? If he wins here in Vienna (which seems likelier day by day), then he'll have an additional 250 points ... or will he? ... why did this atp writer say it would be 230? was that a typo? 20 points less than the tournament represents? Is that possible? ...

"Del Potro can add 230 South African Airways 2011 ATP Year-To-Date Rankings points by lifting the Vienna trophy this week. He is currently No. 13 in the battle for London with three spots left up for grabs."

thx :) ........ now for question #2: If Del can't statistically make it into the top 8 even if he wins the remaining tournaments between here and London ... can he statistically make it into the top ten by year's end??? :?:

K so .......... let the rise proceed ... each of these semifinalists has already earned 90 points ... and the winner today will then have a total of 150.

anderson hasn't lost a set all week ... i'm guessing delpo can take at least a set from him and, since he's beaten him before, he can do it again!

vamos juan, go get that 150! :)

First blood by Delpo, he breaks for 3-2 in the first set and then consolidates it, 4-2. By the way why there is no thread for discussing Vienna tournament?

It is in the deciding set now and Anderson escapes break point on his serve at 2-3 with 3 straight aces. Remember he's beaten Murray in Montreal and gave Novak a fight in Miami, so a very dangerous apponent that south african is.

Del Potro breaks serve to take the decining set 6-4. He is now one match away from winning his 3rd title of 2011.

sad for delpo's loss today ... tipsy also lost in st.pete's

h2hxx.jpg

k, so del won't prolly be in the top 8
but he might very well end up in the top 10 by year's end

juan just seemed to run out of gas today in the third set, even end of the second, and jowillie got stronger as the final progressed.

JWT gets 250 points
JMDP gets 150 points

Omg 25 aces for Jo! And only 4 break points for Delpo, 3 of them in the very beginning of the match. No wonder he lost. Now to Valencia, where the field looks very strong, such players as Verdasco, Isner, Davydenko, Cilic are unseeded! Delpo himself is drawn to meet Tursunov in the 1st round, then probably Anderson and probably again Tsonga in the QF. I wouldn't count on Delpo going too far there....

Fish (7th in Race), Berdych (8th), Almagro (10th), and Simon (11th) all lose in the 1st Round of their events. Del Potro (and Tipsy, I suppose) should make the most out of this week.
