Why does Federer have/need a coach?

Federer won several slams very convincingly, if I'm not mistaken, without a coach. Surely someone who is the greatest player of all time would know the game better than anyone else...or am I missing something? Maybe his coach is there because he doesn't have time to arrange courts or other time consuming stuff? That would be reasonable. But in terms of his actual tennis, I don't see how a coach would help when he won many slams without one.

It can be helpful to have somebody to talk to about your game and bounce ideas off. Even in 2004 when he had "no coach", Mirka was very involved and would regularly attend practices and he could talk to her. He also had an old friend, Reto Staubli who he used to play club tennis with who came to some of the grand slams and informally coached him a bit. It was Reto he talked to during the rain delay at Wimby '04 when they decided to change tactics against Roddick.

Now that he is less successful than before and less on "autopilot", he probably values talking tactics with a coach more than before. Coaches can also suggest new drills to try to improve certain shots if he's struggling with them.

....Because he has trouble finding babysitters.

It's good to have another voice telling you what to do and add new ideas, and also, to give you more motivation.

Coaches do everything from book practice courts and partners to scouting new opponents to getting equipment cared for to, per Brad Gilbert's last book, running out early in the morning to Starbucks to get Andy Roddick's favorite breakfast items.

Yeah this I can understand. That's not really coaching his tennis though. I think Federer shouldn't have a coach. He knows better than anyone how to win matches.

There is an age when 1, 2 or 10 coaches won't be enough to get you slams. Coaches are not miracle workers. But they can still carry one's racquet bag when needed :)

Lol. Irrelevant, but one of the kids looks exactly like the Fed to me.

I think coaches are relevant, though, because he can't win slams the same way he used to. He is slower moving than before and has to rely on slightly different tactics if he is to win a slam again. He didn't get bashed around by Berdych or Tsonga like he does now.

There's been huge improvements in Federer's game since Annacone, I think at his ever ageing persona he was mentally mistaken he could continue to play a safe passive game slugging it out at the baseline. The fact was as he gets older, he would not be winning those baseline rallies.

Areas that needed work like his serve crept into his game and hurt badly all through 2009. The aggression that was once the dominant factor in his game during his prime slowly disappeared, so did his highly successful net game.

Annacone over time drastically improved Federer's serve, thats what's been key in him still reaching QF/SF/F's this year instead of R3/R4 - the variety, the timings between 1st and 2nd, not slicing back every 2nd serve etc. Clear results = WTF 2010.

World Tour Finals also showed a much more aggressive 'shortening rallies' Federer who is not afraid to attack the net. There is a big change in his net game when you compare Federer lately to him vs Berdych @ Wimbledon 2010.

Federer said in an interview sometime mid-early 2010 that he was 'frustrated where his game is' - When that happens yet you still have the passion to continue playing, that's why Federer hired a coach. A fantastic choice IMO if he still wants to be a name in 2010-2013, albeit no new slams.

They both look exactly like Federer. They are identical twins. I know there are small differences between them but not that much. Both little Fed clones.

Federer himself has stated he gets confused re which one is which.

Yeah that seemed a little too ridiculous. And then the one part about Roddick forgetting his shoes?? Like really?? What I don't get is why not put the shoes in your tennis bag the night before? Or why not just wear the shoes out of the hotel... I mean Tennis shoes don't have to be just for on the courts..

i definitely agree coaches are beneficial no matter who you are. its kind of like chess it's tough to see the whole board every time someone else can catch something you may have missed.

i actually wish fed would slice more on the bh.
