I can't say that I'm totally surprised given that she's always been inconsistent, but this summer there seems to be something else at play. It's been a crazy year for her with the AO final and FO win, and becoming a mega celebrity in China. She seems a little bit stressed, a little worn out. Now the Slams are over. Time for her to rest.
And, as much as she improved her game, it is still a game that can have wild fluctuations. Even though she's learned to play more recovery shots and rally balls, she still is an aggressive, hard hitting player, and once those shots stop dropping in, confidence can decline quickly, Slam champion or not.
As I said in another thread, I don't know if she'll win another Slam. She certainly could if she gets back in form, but I'm not going to count on it. Her late career run of AO SF, other Slam QFs, AO final, and FO win, is pretty remarkable. Regardless of whether she wins another Slam, I do think we'll see her have good Slam results (QF or better) again. It's not that uncommon for players to have a rough second half of the year. I don't think we've seen the last of Li Na playing at a top level.

if you look at her achievements as a whole, it's not really puzzling that she's having roller coaster results. it has always been that way. the only thing that changed is that she learned to win a grand slam tournament. in the past, she couldn't even win any kind of title. then she learned to win minor titles. now she has learned to win a major. but the pattern of her actual results are no better than what it was in the past.

She looked mentally exhausted out there in her match. There was no real consistency, and shotmaking from her. This has been a monumental year for her, the first half was probably more than she had expected, with the RU at AO and then the big win at FO. Plus, with that win, comes all the stardom, the spotlight, and all the expectations.
I think she is just exhausted. I do hope she will bounce back soon though since I really like her game, and enjoy watching her play.

yeah ...its funny. Li Na should have lost to Kvitova at the French.
Then Kvitova won Wimbledon.

I think in the case of Li it probably is a bit of fatigue and burnout.
Kvitova I think is having a "I won my first major" hangover. The pressure to be champion, everyone expecting her to be number one.....
Both players need to go back to basics on court and work their way into form.

Li Na was saying in an interview ,that her timing was off ,and her new coach said it was OK... so no communication there.. she was the 6th seed (i think),with all the new found success and hoopla ,she still should win at least 1 round..she's going out first round everywhere she plays..

Li Na is also going on 30 years old, an age where in the current tennis schema wear and tear may start to exact a toll, niggling little injuries may hamper more than they once did.

are you doubting the money she earns from endorsements ? if so you need to go to China and see.. she's IMO making the most of all female athletes.. Chinese people don't report a lot of money matters...

What I mean is , I dont think she doesnt give a damn about winning matches and tournaments. I think she wants to compete and win, unlike other players who got/get paid for nothing on tour like Kournikova and Ivanovic.

Nothing? She is former #1 and she is stunning. Li Na is your typical nothing. She got lucky and she is Chinese. Actually, being Chinese is her biggest asset and selling point.

People are expecting too much from Li Na she was always inconsistent but can also play incredible tennis. Li Na had a great year though reaching the finals of the Australian Open and having a breakthrough at the French Open. Li Na now will become a very rich woman. Maybe Li Na's motivation is down? What's the point for Li Na to work hard anymore when she's set? She's going to make millions of dollars due to her French Open victory. The French Open changed Li Na's life the Chinese people and government expect so much from her now the pressure was just too much. I hope Li Na continues to cash in on this French Open victory. I am so proud of Li for proving she definitely had the goods to win a major! I hope she can a few more.
