Guess what?

The Washington Post is having a contest to find a new advice columnist, and I made the top ten finalists!!!

The way it works is that readers vote for their favorite, and the lowest vote-getters are eliminated. Winner gets to write an advice column for four weeks.

You can read my entry here:

OK, tennis friends. If you like what you see, vote for Cindy!!

Agreed. You form a mental picture of a person after a while. Sometimes that mental picture is off by just a tad. This is one of those times for me.

The advice did not even mention that pregnant women are protected by law in the workplace and accomodations must be made for them. The boss has no choice in this matter. Document every conversation and its date and time and make it clear it is his duty to abide by the law. Put it in formal email after the meeting and copy it to yourself.

I would have suggested that the pregnant woman should buy snow tires at Costco and take plenty of prenatal supplements.

If it requires creating an account with the Post, not gonna vote. Don't want to be spammed for the rest of my life with email and don't want to look for the small "unsubscribe" link, which will not be honored anyway.

It is up! No need to give your email address! I voted successfully:

"Thanks for voting! We'll announce the winners early next week. Follow the contest at washingtonpost.com/workadvice and vote for your favorite contestant each week."

Can anyone guess who (or is it whom?) I voted for?

Registration is not required and voting finally opened.

I voted for Cindy - who wrote a good entry and is cuter than I bet anyone here imagined. :)

Of course, I was too lazy to read the other entries, was that wrong?

It is wrong. I did the same too, but it is wrong. It brings up the larger question of what talent means in the Internet generation. It is already well-established in the US that online ads and pseudo-feedback collection techniques are very useful for negative campaigning during elections. If talent is chosen based on how many people can be enlisted to vote, it is a problem. But some would argue that it too is a talent, like musicians needing to look good.

Worse is that I thought she posted a video of herself playing 3-4 years ago. So I thought I already knew what she looked like, but obviously I remembered wrong.

I'll tell you what.

I will never, ever again read an advice column and think, "Good lord. That's lame. I could do better." It has been much more difficult than I expected.

Still, it's been fun. I have really enjoyed reading the other contestants' entries. It's interesting to see different takes on the same question.

How do you know her photo is recent?

Hey, now. Ksteph and Topaz can vouch for me.

It's amazing what you can do with lighting, make-up and a healthy distance between subject and camera . . . .

After playing tennis for 2.5 years now... I can safely say... most people who play tennis don't look like they play tennis.

Got my vote. Of course, I was too lazy to read the other entries, was that wrong? We've seen quite a bit of your work here...
I read the earlier, pre-screening if you will, entries. Cindy's had plenty of personality and good advice. Some surprise.

And, hey, I liked "revenude." Reminds me of many years ago and a hearing for a nursing home expansion, so many new "regular" nursing home beds and so many intended for the "developmentally disabled."
I even liked the Grinch reference.

Anyway, good luck with it.
+1

I'll be keeping my eye on you.

Well, I voted for Cindy because based on her TW posts, I think she writes well, in an interesting, spirited, engaging, accessible way, and she has a bit of self-deprecating sense of humour. Not that I agree with anything she says about adult tennis leagues but hey....

All the other contestents also have weird photos with their heads tilted at 45 degrees ('look at me, I'm trying to be coy'), or with the camera zoomed in on them ('psycho') or 'I'm too lazy to use a proper photo so I'll use my graduation photo instead' (Yes, I'm talking to you Sulu!). Call me 'lamb chopsist' but I also can't vote for anyone with a Martin Sheen haircut and some lamb chops who can't be bothered to look into the camera.

I wanted to vote for Pedro, but since nobody was named like that I voted for Cindy.

BTW, I expected you to be about 50 yo. You look around 35.

You guys are sweet. Thanks!

You know, I have a feeling I'm going to get swamped. I don't do Facebook (but my kids are furiously updating my Facebook page and accepting friend requests from people I have ignored for years). I don't even know how to send out a mass email.

And no, you don't have to register to vote!

Yup, that's Cindy. Though she's usually wearing purple!

I used to feel so special knowing I knew what you look like! But at least I can still use my sighting of Mr. Sphinx as a claim to fame!

So, I can go friend you on FB, but I'll be chatting with your kids???

It is wrong. I did the same too, but it is wrong..

sureshs made me feel guilty, so I looked at the other entries and confirmed that I was right the first time. Some of them aren't bad, but they don't have Cindy's sparkle. As our beloved (?) Chopin might say, it was silly of me to doubt myself.

And, Cindy, before you start your gig, you should really check this out. This wisdom has been guiding my life for almost 4 decades.

You write beautifully! Hardly a surprise as your post are always fluent and funny..

You are also nothing like I had imagined, really, although I had nothing specific in mind I was quite surprised. You look so fit and young, damn you!

Voted for you! Good luck!

Is there a simple link to click to spare the Post readers from what the TTW forumers have endured over the past few years?

Sure, friend me. I am quickly getting up to speed on FB. I don't use it, so I only have 93 friends.

That is sad, isn't it?

I wrote a script that will auto-voat for Cindy from a pool of legit IP addresses @ 10-20 voats every 60 minutes.

I can guarantee Cindy will win based on the current voat count seen in the /bin/logs directory.

Nevermind, set me up with Nikki Stevens instead. Tell her this is her only chance to date a Stanford grad.

Your responses seem thoughtful and on-point.

I'm not a big fan of all those Gratuitously Capitalized Phrases though. They seem a little affected, and give the impression that you're trying to be cute for the reading audience, rather than speaking directly to the advice-seeker.

great job networking for votes. just voted for ya. some of the responses i read from the contestants were quite tart on the friend/business question.

also liked your ending comment about ignoring the relationship drama, but you'd peek anyways.

good luck on the next round!
