Marat Safin with a great comment about Federer

Nice try...

In at least one way the Olympic Gold in singles is more valuable than a slam because its played only once every four years.

Federer himself wants desperately to win the Olympic singles gold in 2012!

Not to mention when Nadal beat Cvac at the Olympics in 2008,Cvac cried on his way off the court after he lost. I guess it meant jack squat to him according to Trollforthewin.

why do people get so invested in one player that they feel compelled to bash other players? I honestly don't get it. Unless the player you're bashing kicked your dog or stood up your kid sister or something, I mean, what the heck?

I'm not a "fan" of any particularly player. I'm a fan of the sport and I enjoy watching high quality tennis, regardless of who is playing it. Now I have a preference for Federer because I simply enjoy watching all court styles more than baseliners, but I recognize brilliance when I see it.

Federer at his peak is the best I've ever seen, and I've been watching tennis live and in person since the early 70s. But we're blessed to have Federer, Nadal and Djokovic playing at this level at the same time. The US Open was a blast to watch. I didn't care who won, but I enjoyed watching it immensely.

I have respect for all of them and I look forward to a very exciting 2012.

Safin said Nadal is better than Djokovic? This would be a terrible blow for DjokovicForTheWin. Please delete this thread before she sees it.

Djokovic was like a punchbag for Safin in their two matches, although Djokovic was a mere 17 year old facing a prime Safin at the 2005 Australian Open. Their 2008 Wimbledon match was very different however, with Safin having a relatively easy straight sets win against the then world number 3, despite Safin being well past his prime.

Safin could've been one of the great ones. Not sure why he never could put it all together for an extended period of time.

I won 50 bucks for that Wimbledon 2008 Safin win :). My bud was a self-proclaimed *********, and refused to accept Safin would beat him. How wrong he was :).

It is possible Safin genuinely does not think Federer is top 3 all-time, and did not want to make it a big deal when the interview cried.

Well clearly Safin omitted Federer....I'll assume that he just made an odd oversight....maybe he gives as much thought to his answers as he did professionalism/effort to his career!

But yes....for whatever reason, he snubbed Fed....funny that Fedfanboys are celebrating his make-up response ;-)

I am not sure why anyone would have expected Djokovic to lose to Safin at Wimbledon 08 considering Djokovic was in his best year ever, Safin sucks on grass, Safin was well past his prime, and there was no indication of the form in lead up grass matches to indicate the result. Basically a lucky guess to get that one right.

Bring on the Oz open.We will have it nice and hot so the balls fly. Then we will see some real tennis. Also,we will see if Djoko can continue his unbelievable run (except he has done it so it must be believable).Cannot wait. This is gonna be awesome.

intuition. Djokovic was reeling from losing 3 straight matches to Nadal, and was probably at his lowest point in confidence at that time; He'd lost the semi's against Nadal in.. Hamburg? when he was up 3-0 in the first and playing for the number two ranking, and again lost to Rafa in Roland Garros Semis, again playing for the number 2 ranking, and lost a very close final to Rafa in Queens just the previous tournament... plus Djokovic wasn't any more impressive on grass at that point than Safin, really.

It wasn't hard to assume an upset could happen; safin is dangerous to anyone if he finds his range.. and Djokovic definitely didn't fight for that match; he was just bummed out that whole month, really.

Yeah, you could never ever count out Safin, the guy's a slam winner, had beaten Goats like Sampras, Fed on the GS stage.

At age 21 who had the most achievements: Borg, Nadal, Federer, Agassi or Courier?

Yep..... Jimbo! So, he is the GOAT@21.

Where is he on the all-time great list?... Almost nowhere.

You can make a case for Connors being the best, certainly if we're talking about best careers.

I don't think I've ever see someone win as many 'classic' matches with the greatest players of all time in slams whilst being the underdog every single time. Some morons believed Safin was overhyped. Couldn't be further from the truth the guy was never favoured to win any slam.

US Open - favoured to lose to Pete
AO 2005 - In all fairness, I don't think Safin could believe what he did!
- Matches in which he was the underdog against Guga, Agassi, Sampras, Ferrero, Hewitt, Roddick, Djokovic, Nalbandian etc and the guy has risen to the occassion - in slams no less!

Safin could be beat anyone when focused. When Safin wasn't focused he played the wrong way and would let emotions get the better of him. Hard, new grass or clay. I don't think Safin would challenege any comfortable mover on the faster grass - but this has more to do with Safin being 6"7 not his tennis skills. It's clearly obvious he doesn't lack in this department.

Classy comment.

For you soccer fans here, Diego Maradona once came to my country, El Salvador, and was asked who was the greatest player ever. He said Pele. Then they asked him about "El Magico" Gonzales, my nation's best player ever. Maradona said, "You asked me about the best player in the world, not the best player in the universe".

Um...no. He does. Have you ever heard Safin talk about Federer before? He talks about him like he's talking about God.

Safin's answer is just a proof of Roger's greatness.

And if Safin says Rios could have won 10 slams if he had a better work ethic does that make it a fact as well?

What Marat says or doesn't say doesn't prove or disprove Fed's greatness in any way. Fed's achievements in the game are what proves his greatness, now how great he is compared to some other tennis legends depends on whome you ask but the fact that he's a great player has become nigh undisputable (unless you harbor an intense hatred for the guy).

In a comparison of 17-year-olds yes that is logical. How else would you compare 17-year-olds?

You were implying that at 25 Borg and Nadal had better achievements, thus possibly were greater than Fed, so using this logic, one could say that Becker and Chang were better as well since by 17 they were already major winners, my comparison wasn't some random comparison of 17 yr olds.

if you had water it down this much to make him understand (i hope he does now), you can ignore him going forward.

Before his friendly match against Sampras, Marat Safin made a great comment in one of his interviews. Here is what happend:

Interviewer," Who are the three best players in tennis history?"

Safin," Borg, Sampras and Nadal"

Interviewr," Federer?."

Safin," I thought you said players from planet earth."

:)

----------

Pretty much.

2004-2007 were out-of-this-world years. 3 different years where he won 3 slams is very hard to repeat.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Courier is the youngest male player to have played in the finals at all 4 majors during his career, aged 22 years and 11 months.
Yep, I thought it was younger but this makes it even better. He was also tracking ahead of them in slams wins at some point around then too. Somewhere around there.

So, shall we say Courier = GOAT@22y11m?

Don't forget that safin and fed played throughout from juniors to pro together. Safin is probably one of the guys that watched fed from the start seeing how he changed as a player and person to get where he is today.

Witty indeed.

What Federer has done is not possible by earthly tools available.

It is rather a unique combination of genes given to him, or gifts from Gods, if they exist.

Now, sometimes I ask myself a question:

Which is greater? The guy who gets to where he wants to be by pure determination, hard work and sacrifices whatever he has for it, or the guy who gets there easier because he has been given more talent?

The answer is always the same. I appreciate the hard worker, but celebrate the uniqueness of a once in a lifetime talent.

If you have ever been to a classic car auction you know how it goes. The car that sells for the highest price is not the one that has more power, runs faster or has no imperfections. It's the one with fewer, or none, duplicates.

Just because Fed makes things look easy that doesn't necessarily mean that he doesn't work hard to make things look so easy when he execute his shots. We just think it is effortless because he makes it so. There has to be a lot of work involved for him too. But then again, I am only speculating. Only Fed can answer that if he works hard or not versus other players who aren't not so gifted.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Safin! <3 IMO, the ONLY player to have beaten Federer on a non-clay surface during his absolute prime (2004-2006)!
