I'm sorry, but I struggle with a lot of the iconic 70s bands efforts in concert. Bombastic, out of tune and out of time all too often...
Oils on the Water is certainly one of the greats. Not a massive fan, but that concert version (Eagles Live) of 'Seven Bridges Road' is pretty epic.

WOw, I can't believe we thought of the same video jhick. I read brazillians chanting so I had to take a peak. Rush in Rio is fricking incredible, and La Villa Strangiato is amazing.

Hmm, I disagree pretty strongly, actually. There is more to great music than technical skill or the only candidates here would be either speed metal bands or Yngvie Malmsteem...
As a musician, I went through a few phases in what I thought was 'great'. Early on, it was anyone who could play something I couldn't, which meant I had Neil Young as my guitar idol at one point!!!
Then my understanding grew and I became obsessed with 'musician's musicians' like Rush and the Dixie Dregs.
As I got older, however, I found I started listening for other things in the music, things like tone and taste and soul.
So now I still love Rush, and Steve Morse, but I think RHCP are one of the truly great live bands in the world, and my guitar idol is, erm, Neil Young

Oh I know. It's more than just being able to play an instrument well, but I still think Rush is incredible live. They've got their light shows going, Geddy's washing machines, and they feed off crowd energy very well I think.
I know that a lot of bands the act was almost if not more important than everything else. Kiss comes to mind, Alice Cooper, maybe a few others, but I'm not thinking totally clearly right now. Maybe Maiden with the giant Eddie and such.

While I have no problem with the first part of that statement bc it is your opinion, the 2nd part is ridiculous. As for Flea, in a poll from just this year, Rolling Stone magazine lists Flea as the second best bassist of all time. Your boy is number 4. As for the talentless part, that's pure ignorance, and screams that you are severely undereducated on their live performances. Not to mention their music period. I strongly suggest you listen to Stadium Arcadium in it's entirety, (which is one of the best rock albums in recent memory), and any live performance of RHCP post 2000 before making such an asinine statement. John Frusciante is one of the best guitarists ever. Not to mention he improvises 80% of his guitar solos on stage, and rarely does the album version. Many, many, MANY music experts agree, do some research. Here's a start.

No one finds it ironic that the guy espousing the awesomeness of RHCP (of which there is certainly no doubt in my mind) has the Stadium Arcadium cover as his avatar? You could have blindly pointed at a stack of RHCP albums and picked a better one.
At any rate, I'm not sure at which point we diverged from live performances to individual talent, but no list would be complete without Dave Grohl. That man is talent incarnate, and he pisses excellence.

As far as me being a fan or not, it's irrelevant to the discussion of great live performances. Everyone posting videos of bands, is going to be a fan. Unlike him I didn't trash talk a band which I clearly know nothing about. And as for better.... you could say that bc SA is a very NON-commercial album. It didn't produce an "Otherside" or an "Under the Bridge" bc it's less mainstream but it has their best guitar solos, riffs, and vocal harmonies of their career imo.

Hmm, SA beats the guitar solos on both imo, and there's not many harmonies on BSSM. Don't get me wrong though, If I like SA lets say 98/100.... I like BSSM and Cali 97/100. It's just the SLIGHTEST margin I have SA ahead of those. Like the post on the last page, the 2 performances I posted, one is from the BSSM album, the other from the By the way album. Lately I've been listening to a LOT of BSSM, and pre-BSSM stuff from the 80s.

Although I love both songs, I usually start the album at track 3 lol. Charlie, Wet Sand, and Especially in Michigan are my fav's off Jupiter... She looks to me, Animal Bar, and Make you feel better off Mars.
I like John Frusciante a lot..I really like his solo tune "The past Recedes", and if you look deep into youtube videos it's amazing he's even alive nevermind still playing.
However, he is not the talent Alex Lifeson, regardless of whether you like Rush's style of music or not. Frusciante's imporovised solos aren't bad, but it's mostly just a Jimmy Hendrix impersonation. I've been playing guitar for 25 years and I'm pretty confident in my opinion on that. It's not a knock on him, it's just a fact. Many guitarists have tried to capture the Vodoo Chile feel, Frusciante being one of them.
He was a better technical player before he almost killed himself with heroin and cocaine and came back from the dead. Watch "life's a bath" video on youtube to see the depths this guy went into, only if you have a strong stomach.
Rush's Permanent Waves-Grace Under Pressure phase.... they were an amazing band..not just playing wise, but not being afraid to be a part of the "new wave" sound that other classic rock dinosaurs were throwing their noses up at.
Of course we're talking about 2 completely different bands here, one that focuses on raw energy live, and one that focuses more on esthetics, and these type of arguments never get anywhere.

Oh I Know, he is very, very, VERY lucky to be alive. Really crazy how deep he went before coming back up. I prefer his playing after the comeback to the playing before though personally. Most people don't really talk about his style pre-comeback bc he wasn't being himself. He says so in their book.
I prefer his style now too, but he was a much better techincal player before. I'm not a chili peppers fan..I had never heard that Animal Bar tune until you mentioned..just streamed an MP3...it's pretty good, I just can't stand Kedis' huffing and puffing after awhile. Frusciante's playing on that song is excellent.
He obviously suffered some permanent damage, though..he's got the cocaine stroke speach thing like Steven Adler from GNR.
