This is true, and Nadal owes him a very nice Christmas gift for saving his RG for him. Otherwise,he would have lost that slam for sure. He also saved my sanity by not allowing that weasley Cvac to win a calendar year grand slam.

I actually think there is a pretty good possibility that Ferrer can beat Djokovic. I also don't think that Djokovic is the most in-form player at this year's WTF apart from Federer. I think Tsonga is.

nah dude Berdych played out of his mind and still lost to Djokovic. Hes in decent shape. We dont know that much about Ferrer since Murray sucked completely. I dont think he stands a chance against Djokovic, though, he doesnt have anything to hurt him especially on this surface. Tipsarevic wont beat Djokovic unless Novak tanks big time.

Tsonga could be tricky for Djokovic if they meet in the semis though I agree with that

Lol. Good call tennis_pro

He didn't have a fantastic season. Not by a long shot. 6 major finals lost to the same player including 2 slams. That's a fantastic season?? For a player of Rafa's caliber? In what universe?? It was a good season but it was Rafa's worst since 2004.
Almost 3 slams lost to Joker. Lucky for Rafa that Fred took care of things in the semi !

Perspective, some people on this board would do well to get it, sheesh. Rafatards are just unbelievable.

The man makes what...8 straight finals, on 3 surfaces? IW, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, FO, Queen's Club, Wimbledon. Sadly, he only wins 2 of these finals, falling to the hands of one player in particular...

Makes 3 slam finals, wins one. Makes back to back finals in ALL 3 slams.

Like I said, Nadal did NOT have a bad season. Someone else just had a BETTER season.

Actually within the top 3-4 how good or bad a season is depends on their respective standards and they lean on one another.

Nadal had a bad 2009 because Fed won more slams and titles. Nadal won a slam in 2009.

Fed had a bad 2010 because Nadal won more slams and titles. Fed won a slam and WTF. Ditto for 2008 except the WTF part.

Coming to 2011, Nadal had a bad year because Djoko won more slams and masters than him.

As a elite(and I mean top 4) player, you can't have a "good" year when someone else is ruling the roost above you. Adequate maybe but not good. While you talk about those finals, you forget that Nadal would have been slamless if Djoko hadn't been taken out in RG. Then how would Nadal's year look? 8 finals, no slams. Not so good anymore, huh? First slamless year since 2004 suddenly changes the tone of the discussion.

Speaking from the perspective of a longtime Nadal fan, Nadal had maybe one or two matches in 2011 that reminded me of his old self and funny enough, they were in tournies that he actually lost. Nadal was a shadow of his former self this year if we are talking about his game.

If you think, irregardless of losing in the finals, that Nadal's results are bad, there is really nothing more to say to you, you will have slipped irrevocably into delusional ****ism.

Are you kidding me? Even if Djoker had taken him out at RG, he would still have made the finals...back to back years of making 3 slam finals. That is still phenomenal....except to delusional fantards.

Furthermore, Fed didnt have a 'bad' 2010. He won a major, at his age, when he had already broken Sampras slam record and won his 6th Wimbly. That is a great year. And won WTF final to boot. This year he didnt win a major, but he can hang his hat on giving Djoker his first L of the season, winning Paris for the first time( and beating some recent nemesis to do it) and he may well back up his WTF win. Very good season.

See, the difference betweeen you and me is that I have *reasonable* expectations from players. Anything Fed does at this point in his career is just a bonus.

Now with Nadal, I get it, he's your guy and you want him to win, you EXPECT him to win and he is in his prime. But with some perspective you can still appreciate how incredible his season was, win or lose. 8 straight finals on 3 surfaces spanning 3 tennis seasons( spring hard court, clay and grass) is phenomenal. Back to back years of making 3 slam finals, one final on his worst surface no less, is very very good. Djoker was just better. Period.

God, with fans like you Rafa surely has no need for enemies.

Reluctantly, as a big Nadal fan I have to agree. Without Novak 2.0 in the picture my hero would have had the bestest year of his career no doubt.

You misinterpret, they are bad according to that player(Nadal's)standards). His golden standard, in the last years at least:

is to win at least one GS(usually RG) - barely, and only because Fed took Djoker out. I don't have to tell you what I though about his performance during the whole of RG 2011.

dominate most clay masters - only MC this year and his performance there was not exactly mindblowing to be sure.

get to WB final - check.

And this is RESULTS wise, if we are talking about game, his clay game has taken a BIG hit, grass is about the same, HC level is worse than 2010 but still better than pre 2009 levels.

Without Fed's unexpected gift in RG, Nadal would have failed to win a slam this year. RG and MC are the only saving graces in 2011 for him, Nadal will be the first to tell you that.

Finals don't matter, titles matter. Ask Lendl.

In 2011 Nadal lost 7 finals, as many as in the combinded 2008-2010 period.

I doubt Nadal would think that a year in which he lost 7 finals is a good one.

I didnt say he had a perfect year, what I said was by no means did he have a BAD year, even by his standards. Nadal Im sure would take the consistency of making so many finals, all he would change is the outcome of the final itself, obviously.

But to say he had a bad year is ridiculous. It may have been a painful and humbling year, but it was still very very good. Someone else was just better.

What a **** statement. You cant win a title if you dont even get to the final!

There isnt an LOL in the world big enough to encapsulate the derision Im feeling right now, as if you know the inner workings of
Rafa's brain, LMAO! But I do admit, had he lost the RG final, who knows what would have happened in Wimbly.

What would your rather have, 2 titles from 4 finals or 2 titles from 10? I'm pretty sure you would beat yourself up more for blowing so many shots, not bigging yourself up for getting to so many finals. You get to finals to win titles, at least as far as top dogs are concerned.

In the end silverware matters and I'm not talking about the runner up plates.

No one is saying that Nadal should automatically win finals but he usually won half of them at least. This year he couldn't win one when he faced someone else that Ferrer and even the lone exception, the Fed win in RG ,was forced as hell. On Fed's worst surface, Nadal's best, with Fed past his peak, Nadal barely beat him. Take from that what you will.

Look up some of Nadal's interviews about his season from this autumn. He says that the crowning achievement of his season is RG aka THE slam. Having got that, he can big up his season(hey man, 8 finals and such) but if Fed missed a couple of balls in his SF, Nadal would be standing on empty now, with only MC and Barcelona in his pocket. For a guy used to winning slams, that would be a bad year.
Nadal also said that 2009 was a bad(or difficult as he puts it) year for him overall and Nadal won a slam in emphatic fashion in AO in that year.

It's all in the perception and for top dogs, big titles are what make their year and Nadal barely got 1(2 if I am putting MC), with courtesy of Federer.

Was a couple of seats from the front to see the biggest demolition of Rafa ever, it was just a perfect performance, it feels like he just hit a winner on every point and didn't miss a thing, just incredible, one of the best performances of Feds career for sure, i feel unbelievably lucky to have seen my idol playing such unbelievable tennis, god ive seen some surprising results the time i was there, Ferrer beating Djokovic 6-3 6-1 indoors, that was just ridiculous, probably the biggest upset of the year, never saw it coming in a million years, is funny how everyone had written Ferrer off to be the weakest opponent of this event and has yet to drop a set lol.

From 2004 - 2011, Nadal has had five years where he won 1 Major a year, one year where he won two (2008), and one year where he won 3 (2010). Winning more than one slam a year for Nadal is not the norm, it is extraordinary. However, a season where he "only" wins one slam is not a bad one.

idk about this. Federer was the better player at RG and Nadal took him down. Yes, it isn't exactly a novelty when Nadal beats Federer but quite possibly, Djokovic could have been overwhelmed by Rafa's spin and speed.

No it wasnt a bad year. A bad year is no titles, no slams,
early exists from tournaments and injury, thats a bad year. He won a slam, he had consistent performance on all surfaces. Thats a solid year, not a great one, but a solid one and certainly not "bad". Hell, 99.1% of the tour would gladly take his "failures" this year.

In the end silverware matters and I'm not talking about the runner up plates.

Ok yes, of course its better to win the title than not, but saying that reaching a final has no value is frankly, ridiculous. This is the ****ism I am talking about. Its basically saying the guy getting bounced in the first round performed equally as well as the guy who lost in the final.

No one is saying that Nadal should automatically win finals but he usually won half of them at least.

That seems to be exactly what you are saying. If he gets to the final and doesnt win=rubbish.

This year he couldn't win one when he faced someone else that Ferrer and even the lone exception, the Fed win in RG ,was forced as hell. On Fed's worst surface, Nadal's best, with Fed past his peak, Nadal barely beat him. Take from that what you will.

Well excuse Nadal for not beating Fed on clay at 0 and love. :-?

Look up some of Nadal's interviews about his season from this autumn. He says that the crowning achievement of his season is RG aka THE slam......

Well Duh, winning a slam is going to be the crown of anyone's season. And frankly, the fact is that yes, he DID win. Would he have lost to Djoker? Probably, but we'll never know. But he did win the slam so its pointless to speculate.( but you will anyway).

Nadal also said that 2009 was a bad(or difficult as he puts it) year for him overall and Nadal won a slam in emphatic fashion in AO in that year.

Ok, but here is the difference. Rafa was injured for most of 2009. He didnt even play Wimbly and defend his title. He was pretty much injured and dealing with other family issues from AO forward. So again, like I said before -no titles, early exists from tournaments and injury=bad year. Aside from the AO, 2009 was a really bad year for Rafa. This year was completely different. He wasnt hurt, he was fine physically i.e. he had at least had the chance to compete at his best, which he didnt have in 09. He made it to finals consistently across various surfaces, something honestly, he hasnt really done outside of clay. He also made back to back appearances in some finals, something he definitely hasnt done alot of outside of clay. He made 3 slam finals AGAIN. A huge achievment. The only reason this year wasnt a superb year was because of one player. In 2009 he struggled with injury, loss of confidence from FO loss, family issues, you name it.

Oh and finally....all this talk of Rafa' s "standards"

From 2004 - 2011, Nadal has had five years where he won 1 Major a year, one year where he won two (2008) , and one year where he won 3 (2010). Winning more than one slam a year for Nadal is not the norm, it is extraordinary. However, a season where he "only" wins one slam is not a bad one.

which sums up my point entirely. he has shown the most consistency across all surfaces this year...and the only thing that stopped him was one person. He by no means had a "bad" year. A disappointing one and a humbling one perhaps, but in terms of his play, its the most consistent he's ever been in his career.

No, Federer just matches up better against Djokovic than he does against Nadal. We all know it takes almost an impossibly perfect day for Fed to beat Nadal on clay...especially on slow clay in best of 5. Djokovic had just stomped Nadal in four consecutive Master's Series finals including two on clay. Nadal lucked out big time.

Wow hold your horses there. The only place where Fed is superior to Rafa is indoor. Rafa beat Fed at RG and Miami and I think would beat Fed anywhere outdoor unless his form deteriorates significantly. Fed did not beat a red hot Djoko on hard yet. 1 win on clay for 4 or 5 losses elsewhere (including in the 2 hard court slams) is NOT a good record.

Fed got to 2 MPs against Djoker in the USO, how far did Rafa go, please remind me?

Fed basically won Rafa the RG by beating Djokovic for him.

Fed slaughtered Rafa with Rafa playing as good as he possibly could (and serving in high %) in WTF.

Fed has 16 slams, Rafa has 10. Until Rafa gets to that number, shut it.

******* and hewitt were and still are crap on clay. ddick avoided most clay events and couldn't serve with disguise or good direction, but the weak era was so bad that he was ranked #2 FOR 2 1/2 YEARS.

if ddick was so good, how come he failed to beat top 10 players in davis cup ties? nadal's serve is never consistent on hardcourts, but even he could beat top 10 opponents in davis cup ties and the olympics.
federer failed to win olympic medals in 2 olympics and he knew davis cup ties would've distracted him from getting lucky in the 2004 & 2007 wimbledon finals, 2009 french open, 2009 wimbledon final and 2010 australian open.

I got to see Fed Rafa WTF 2011 from row B in Fed's backhand corner. That amazing inside out FH came right at me.

I paid £24, the WTF is ther best tennis event ever for real fans!

Bring it on next year.

£24 for a B row seat?? When and how did you get this ticket??

I paid £37 for a 'sky veiw' seat last year...lol

This was a blow. I watched this late last night and it hurt. Federer just outplayed Nadal. I have it on my DVR and it was mind-boggling. But it's not a nice feeling, that's for sure. I give credit to Federer.
